EXCERPT
"Would you like to dance?"

Shiloh gazed at Jeremiah, her handsome escort. No smudges on his face from smoke and ashes. No sturdy turnouts with its fabric rough against her cheek.

Handsome. Serious. Sexy.

Though he barely touched her fingers, the heat shimmered between them.

Shiloh's breath caught in her throat. Tonight was different. He wasn't a hero doing his job. He was a man whose gaze looked into her soul.

And found what?

Did he see the holes where her memory had been? Did he sense her fear and wonder at her doubts?

"I-I can't."

A frown settled briefly on his brow.

"I've never learned any dance steps--I just sway to the music." Shiloh shrugged ruefully.

"I can teach you."

Shiloh's mouth went dry. She struggled to swallow as the fantasy of Jer teaching her more than dance steps raised goosebumps across her skin.

"It's easy." Jeremiah turned his hand over so her palm rested against his. "Just a few simple steps in a box pattern."

His other hand moved to her hip, and he quietly counted the steps as they moved to the music. "One, two, three. One, two, three."

Mesmerized by the movement of his lips, Shiloh simply followed his lead. Until he turned and she stumbled against his feet. She jerked upright, flushed, and stammered out an apology. "I guess all my skill is in my hands--or used to be..."

"You can stand on my feet if you want to until you get the hang of it. Marly used to when she was a kid and Tallie was trying to 'give us some culture', as she said."

"That sounds nice." Wistfulness wove between Shiloh's words.

"Trampled feet or culture?" A dimple appeared in Jeremiah's left cheek when he smiled.

Why had she not noticed that before? "Having lots of siblings must have been nice."

"Intrusive sometimes."

"Better than being alone."

"Were you lonely as a child?" Jeremiah continued dancing with Shiloh as they talked.

"I knew my parents loved me and were doing important work. But I missed being around kids my own age."

"Yeah, you missed out on bruises and elbows in the ribs during basketball games."

They laughed together.

"I didn't realize how lucky I was," Jer said. "Until lately."

"Much has happened lately," Shiloh agreed.

Jer swung her under his arm and she concentrated on keeping her feet moving so she didn't stumble. For the rest of the song, Shiloh focused on dancing rather than talking. As the dance ended, a cautious pride bloomed in Shiloh's chest.

"You're a fast learner."

Jer was staring at her. With something different in his eyes Shiloh hadn't noticed before. Speculation. Desire perhaps.

The orchestra began playing again and she melted into his arms. In this beautiful old house, time seemed to have receded to a gentler era when gentlemen and ladies put on their best manners with their fine clothes for a special night on the town.

Shiloh let her eyes drift closed, wondering what making love would be like with Jeremiah. She fancied it would be much like dancing with him. A slow, tantalizing journey unlike any other she had taken.

Is this what she had missed in younger years by focusing on her studies? Or was this magic reserved for a special someone? Someone she hadn't met until Jeremiah.

When she opened her eyes, Jer was gazing at her. A slight smile on his lips and banked fire in his eyes. He wanted her. Yet made no move to put his desires into action. Truly a gentleman. A hero.

The man she had fallen in love with.

Let's Make Fireworks

Time to pay the piper! How did you do? How much did you write? Did words explode on your WIP?

This is the Rogue's Angels weekly check-in. Every Thursday we encourage the Angels and visitors to let us know how their writing is going.

How well are you doing?

Had problems this week? That's ok. Just sit down this coming week and write. Whatever you do, don't let difficulties from the week before get in your way this week.

Every word is one word closer to the finished product.

So I see the end of Larena's Story. I should finish it up next week or the week after depending on edits for Ella's Pleasure. I have the cover for Ella's Pleasure. Thank you so much Genene. It's wonderful

More than a dog whisperer

Genie Gabriel's novel More Than Just a Dog gently brings you into the world of Francesca (Chessie) Durand and her recently deceased dog, Chap at his gravesite. Chessie has the gift of talking with her dog when he was alive and now dead. She also has the innate gift of talking with deceased people who had been close to her. More Than Just a Dog's intriguing plot urged and propelled me to turn the pages as Chessie faced adventurous perils throughout the novel. The characters were real and memorable, some of them assisting Chessie on her quest to rescue nearly extinct animals in this world and .... You'll have to read the book to follow her escapades and surprises. Also, you'll have to read the book to find out if Peter, a person she met at college, a person that captured her heart with amorous intentions, plays a role in her life. I wasn't disappointed in the ending of the book. In fact, I was completely satisfied with how everything came together. A well-written novel that deserves a five-star rating.

EXCERPT: More Than Just a Dog

With only a fleeting second thought, Peter entered the coordinates in the computer implanted in his wrist to transport to the cave on Chessie’s farm. His mentor had warned him of disturbances in the stargate that caused several “incidents” and had resulted in the decision to seal it off. However, Peter hoped opening the surface entrance had corrected those disturbances.
This was the most direct route to see Chessie and, after weeks of waiting, he wanted more than to just court her in dreams. He wanted to touch her. Smell the scent of flowers in her hair. Convince her they could build a relationship in the real world.
But which real world? His dimension or hers? Or perhaps somewhere totally different.
One step at a time,Peter reminded himself. After his abrupt departure the last time he had seen her, Chessie might not exactly fall eagerly into his arms. Best he establish a cover story before he contacted her. Thanks to a disagreement between the ruling governments of his dimension, he had some time off between assignments of retrieving endangered species during which he could pursue his Chosen One.
He stepped through the stargate in his dimension, anticipating the look of pleasure on Chessie’s face when she saw him.
”Danger. Danger. Coordinates cannot be guaranteed.” His computer implant transmitted the message to Peter’s brain as his body was sucked into a spinning vortex, faster and faster, buffeted on all sides by angry voices and recriminations until he blacked out.

~ * ~

The rock formations fascinated Chessie as she descended into the cave. However, the hot springs drew her most strongly. She loved to slip into the heated water and feel all her tensions wash away, as she was doing today. She thought about posting a notice at the entrance of the cave informing her family of her private hours in the hot springs so she could soak in the nude. But so far, she limited herself to wearing a modest one-piece bathing suit while in the springs.
Her body floated slightly as she closed her eyes and leaned her head back on a rubber pillow she brought with her. “Ahhh…”
She wondered if Peter would enjoy the hot springs as much as she did. Where was he?Were her dreams of Peter and the cave simply her overactive imagination?
Intuitively, she knew more than fantasies were involved. She hoped by returning to the cave, she could solve this mystery.
With her eyes closed, her mind and body relaxed even more. The water rippled against her skin, soothing and calming. A small wave splashed against her chin and Chessie shifted her body. Opening her eyes, she noticed tiny, choppy waves across the pool’s surface that hadn’t been active when she first stepped into the pool.
Sitting up straight now, she touched the merkaba around her neck and wondered if some of its magic was at work.
The ground began rumbling.
Get out of the pool.Chap’s image appeared in her mind.
She didn’t need to be told twice. She shoved her feet back in her tennis shoes and pulled the terry cloth robe around her body.
Frozen with fascination, she stared toward the rock wall where the cave ended—that her grandmother insisted wasn’t the same as when the cave had been closed up.
The rock wall was now splitting apart like giant elevator doors, revealing the dark night sky filled with billions of stars and a spinning vortex that grew larger and larger as it moved toward her.
Use the merkaba,Chap stated. Do not give in to fear. Simply know the merkaba will protect you.
Chessie braced her feet at shoulder width apart and placed a hand over the merkaba. Protect all that is pure. Surround us with love and keep us safe.
She didn’t know where the words came from, but Chessie repeated them over and over as the vortex engulfed her, echoing with her grandfather’s angry voice. “You will never practice your witch’s spells again! You will be obedient! You will do as I tell you!”
Images of her grandfather as he had been when alive swirled within the vortex. Chessie held fast to the merkaba and called upon the spirit of her grandfather. Help us! By all that is loving and pure, keep us safe!
As Chessie repeated these words, a body fell at her feet as the vortex faded and drifted away like mist dispersing under the morning sun.

EXCERPT:

Duchess Jindabyne Madraga, whose memory of the time before she married the Duke has been destroyed by magic, has been captured by her mortal enemies, the forest-dwelling Mori. Their Hooded Queen demands an audience with her.

“Lady, if I wronged you, I humbly beg pardon,” cried Jindabyne.   “Please forgive me.  I was another person then.”

The Mori woman was at the Queen’s side, dragging on her arm talking to her urgently in Mori, a language that Jindabyne did not know.   The queen let herself be pulled away for a moment.   Then suddenly she swung back.

“Have you really forgotten me Jindabyne!  I find that very hard to believe.”

She ripped the covering off her face.

Jindabyne gasped.  Before her stood the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. Utterly, utterly, breathtakingly lovely. How could she have forgotten her!

As she stared in open mouthed amazement, the woman’s eyes widened and the glaring hatred on her face changed to bitter amusement.

“So!  Marigoth was right,” she said, her mouth twisting wryly.  “Or I am less memorable than I thought I was. Something to hope for.”

“Lady I am sorry,” said Jindabyne.  “I always suspected that I did wrong in the past, but I am different now and willing to make amends.”

The savagery of the woman’s glare did not make her any less beautiful.  For a moment Jindabyne thought she was going to leap on her again, but then she slumped back onto her seat.

“Take her away!” she said her voice heavy with disgust.   “I cannot bear the sight of her.”

“Lady please!” cried Jindabyne, as the guards dragged her away.  “If you wish revenge...  Do not harm the others.  They are innocent of any harm to you.  Especially Olga.  You are a mother yourself.”

I had a bad feeling about Indiana from the first instant I heard we were going to be stationed there.

BLURB: Borrowing a Moose Head From Cole Porter

In our time as members of the US Air Force we had lived in many places and gone through many things. We didn’t expect that being stationed at Grissom AFB in Indiana would be the trial it turned out to be. We were leaving Germany, a foreign place, to come to middle America, supposedly home, but Grissom certainly didn’t feel like home.
Between the circus that seemed to run the town of Peru, the god-awful weather and the hostile locals we felt like we had moved into a war zone. But, military families make the best of what they are dumped into so we did our best.

EXCERPT: Borrowing a Moose Head From Cole Porter

We started Barnum meetings/rehearsals the following Thursday, at the Ole Olson Theater building on the edge of Peru. It was just a big warehouse where lots of stage sets were stored and a piece of floor could be tape marked like the Peru High School stage. Rehearsals would take place there on the improvised stage. The production would actually take place in the high school auditorium/theater.
We were given scripts and notified what parts we would play. As I thought, the main characters were all townies who had been connected with Ole or the circus for a long time.
First night rehearsals were a real trip. We had clowns, jugglers, riggers, fliers and high wire walkers. Most came prepared to perform so there were juggling clowns, balancing acts, and tumblers all over the place. One of the clowns seemed completely ready to work. He was a good deal larger than me, meaning over six feet, made up with white face and red wig, stripped pajamas and floppy shoes. He kinda reminded me of Bozo but not exactly. He did remind me of the Jimmy Stewart character in the movie The Greatest Show on Earth. You know, the clown who never took off his make up because he was hiding from the cops? Anyway, this hulking clown was in full make up, and I wondered if he was hiding from the cops as well. Gave me an itchy feeling which increased when he said hello to Mitch. They seemed to know one another, and that didn’t make me happy.
When I got close enough to ask I said, “You know that clown, Mitch?”
“Yeah, and so do you.”
I looked at the clown again and said, “I do?”
“It’s Big Mike from Church,”
From church and from Our Gang.
“Damn. I didn’t even recognize him.”
“Well, the clothes make the man,” Mitch said, with a grin.
“Smart ass.”
He laughed and went back to talking with Mary who was over by the piano.
I watched them and looked over at Big Mike a few times and had thoughts, but like an idiot, I put them away for later consideration instead of grabbing Kathy and Mitch and running for the base. Instead, I calmed my queasy feeling and looked around at the mess of people there for the first Barnummeeting.
I was fascinated by one girl who rode a unicycle. She was a beautiful young high schooler who spent her waiting time that evening hopping her unicycle up a movable stage prop staircase. She would hop up one step, regain her balance then hop up the next step. The stair was only four steps high, but when she got to the top she would lift her arms in victory, turn and bounce back down the steps. I said, thinking out loud, “How the hell can she do that?”
Sam Grant who was not only the piano player but also the musical director said, “My daughter, Linda. She started doing unicycle when she could barely walk. Now she is the national youth champion.”
“There is a competition for unicycle riding?”
Sam laughed. “There is a competition for everything if you look hard enough. Get a Guinness world record book.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“She won a scholarship to Clown College and a thousand-dollar savings bond.”
“Clown College? You’re kidding me.”
“Absolutely not. Clown College is sponsored by Barnum and Bailey Circus and several other circuses worldwide. If you graduate from there you can go clown at any of hundreds of circuses around the world.”
“Hum. Well, she is good at it for sure. Amazing to watch.”
Sam smiled a proud fatherly smile and said “That’s my girl.”
I let it go at that, but I still wasn’t exactly convinced so, being an information geek, I looked it up and it was for real. I found out later that many of the kids who participated in the Peru Circus went on to life in circuses around the world including Barnum and Bailey. Where some students might talk about going the University of Indiana or Ball State a lot of kids around Peru talked about going to Clown College in Florida with perfectly straight faces.

Literally torn between two worlds, Valerie must once again deal with the loss of her husband and come to terms with what happened to Chuck Thomas and who Tony Malone really was.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Brushing just a few final strokes of gold wisps across the cheekbones of her heart-shaped face, Tony sat back on his stool and stared at his work.  Her periwinkle eyes almost hauntingly seemed to pop off the canvas and pierce through him. A sense of panic rushed through his veins.  He dropped the paintbrush in the old coffee can at his feet and stood up looking at the face staring back at him.
I must be going insane, he thought to himself. He grabbed the canvas off the easel and made his way into the kitchen. After rummaging under the kitchen sink, he found a large black trash bag and dumped the painting into the bag.  Throwing it over his shoulder, he made his way down to the apartment incinerator. Sweat was creeping up his neck as he realized Lana would be back from the store soon. He threw his masterpiece into the incinerator and hobbled back upstairs.
The effects of the stroke left Tony restless and bored, especially when the boys were in school. Lana had encouraged him to find a hobby to occupy his time and keep him out of her hair.  After several failed attempts at common “manly” hobbies, he was drawn to painting and sketching and surprised his family with his talent, even selling a few at a local corner shop. He surprised himself with what he had just painted and pitched down the incinerator.
REVIEW:
Moon in Mazatlan
C. L. Kraemer
978-1-62420-223-0
By Jeffrey Ross
4.5 Stars out of 5
This fast-paced detective story has something for everyone! Moon in Mazatlán contains international intrigue, mile-high romance, Russians fighting the Mujahedeen in the 1980’s, and a hard-working detective who learns to love again.
Narcissistic murderess Ashlee makes a bold hospital escape after inflicting an injury upon herself while in custody. Ashlee, a bad girl to the nth degree, and her too-wiling accomplice (and cop-gone-bad) Kurt, flee to Mazatlán using a carefully crafted plan to escape justice.  They are pursued relentlessly by Detective Corey Williams and his new “partner”—a beautiful, curvy, read-headed Harley-riding newspaper reporter named Riona.
Author CL Kraemer does an excellent job of moving the story along.  The ambient temperature in this romantic drama fluctuates between steaming hot and chilling—while the main characters’ passions rise and fall like waves on a Mexican beach. Kraemer does a superb job of showing the dualities of human nature—and illuminates the treacherous gaming which so often occurs between lovers.
(I gave this 4.5 out of 5 stars only because I didn’t want the adventure to stop! Moon in Mazatlán is a classic—a great read!)
EXCERPT: Moon In Mazatlan
Corey turned to the goddess residing next to him. "Hello, I'm Corey." He'd stuck out his hand. The redhead surveyed him head to toe. She took his hand in hers and firmly shook it.
"Riona Byrne."
The husky alto reply sent shivers up his back. He opened his mouth to ask a question.
"Attention! Can I have everyone's attention?" Someone at the head table was speaking into a handheld microphone. The room quieted and Tom Manning stood up. "Hello, everyone. Most of you know me but for those who don't, I'm Tom Manning. I've been Justin's best friend since we were kids in grade school."
Everyone shouted, "Hi, Tom," then erupted into laughter.
"To continue..." Tom grinned. "It wasn't too long ago things looked pretty bleak around here. But thankfully, we've all made it through and are here today to celebrate the wedding of Justin and Diane Anderson, two people who, this time last year, were determined not to get married again. Aren't we glad they changed their minds?"
Guests whistled and clapped.
"If you'll all raise your glasses, please." Tom lifted his champagne glass to the newlyweds. "To Justin and Diane… I wish you a lifetime of happiness and whatever success you desire. May you never go to bed angry and may you always find laughter in your lives. Cheers!"
The room was filled with the sound of clinking glasses and applause. Corey turned to the enchantress he'd just met and found himself facing an empty seat. He sighed. Today is just not my day.
The call went out for all unmarried men to assemble in the center of the room. Corey struggled out of his chair to join a small group of young boys and grandfathers in the center of the reception room. The wedding garter was removed and tossed to the rowdy group. Absently, he put his hand up and choked when the garter landed in his palm. Great. Just what I need… the threat of marriage, again.
He looked to the head table to find Riona smirking at him. The unmarried women were commanded to appear on the floor, and Corey watched closely to see if the enchantress would respond. He smiled to himself. She was easy to spot standing head and shoulders taller than the other women. He easily related to her slightly bored expression. She doesn't want to spoil this for Justin and Diane any more than I do.
The center of the room began to bubble with giggles and jostling for position, except for the tall redhead who stood at the back of the group, tightly crossed arms supporting her impressive bust line. The bride turned her back to the rowdy group, and on the shouted count of three threw the bouquet over her head. The crowd rushed forward to capture the prize but it sailed over everyone's head and landed in Riona's folded arms. Corey exploded in laughter at the shocked expression on her face. A camera flash caught the moment. Straightening to her full five foot eleven inches of height, she bowed from the waist and proceeded back to the head table.
"Who the hell came up with these archaic traditions anyway?" she growled as she plopped into the chair.
"I have no clue, but I don't think they're going away anytime soon," Corey said.
"I could live without everyone giving me flak about being single," she said.
"I know what you mean. Everybody has a cousin they're sure you need to meet. Not all of us have a desire to be married," Corey said.
"Boy, have you got that right! I've done damn well without a husband so far, and it doesn't look like I'll be having too many problems in the future requiring one," Riona responded.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please," the DJ announced. "The bride and groom will start this dance alone. On my signal I'd like the wedding party to join them on the floor then the rest of you can come out and dance. Justin? Diane? If you please?"
The newlyweds floated to the center of the floor and began gliding when the music started. They had danced for a few minutes when the DJ asked the rest of the wedding party to join them on the floor.
"I guess that means us." Corey turned to Riona, saying hopefully, "I'll understand if you say no. I haven't danced in nearly ten years. I could do some major damage on your feet."
"No, that's fine. Let's not spoil the day for our friends. Shall we?" Riona nodded to the dance floor.
Corey rose from his chair and moved to help her. He offered his arm and, with Corey limping, they walked on to the dance floor. Tom Manning had taken Justin's daughter as his partner and was twirling her around the floor. Corey turned to Riona and froze. He stood eye to eye with the elegant beauty. Oh, Lord! I've forgotten how to do this!
Riona moved into him and, placing one hand on his shoulder, the other in his hand, began to move him around the floor.
"I can't believe I've forgotten how this is done," Corey moaned.
"Don't worry. It's like a bike. You crawl on, kick start the engine, and it will all come back to you," she smiled at him for the first time.
He caught his breath at the difference the smile made on her features. She is so gorgeous. I'd never stand a chance with her. Those dark eyes and luscious lips are so—so captivating. If I don't stop staring at her, I'll do something stupid like kiss her.
She turned her head and he noticed the dangling silver earring touching against her shoulders. "Your earrings are very beautiful—unicorns with an emerald?"
"You have a good eye for jewelry. Yes, I had the necklace," she touched her hand to her neck, "and Diane made me a gift of the earrings as thanks for helping her with the wedding."
"They're really beautiful," he said. The emerald Harley with unicorn tank, unicorn earrings with emerald eyes; I really hope I'm wrong.
"Thank you. By the way, is there a reason for the limp?" she asked.
"My feet are killing me. My best friend decided to marry on the hottest day of the year and force me to wear these wretched shoes, which don't breathe; hence, my feet are swelling. I don't have any problem when I wear my cowboy boots. Right now, I can't feel my feet. Please tell me I haven't stepped on your toes," he said.
"Nah, you haven't gotten me yet. Listen, I hope you don't mind but I've an early morning appointment and I need to get some beauty sleep. Can we continue this another time?" she asked; the low sexy tones of her voice barely audible over the music.
"Oh, sure. I've a long day tomorrow and should probably think about my own beauty sleep. Shall we?" Corey motioned for her to lead them back to their chairs.
"Finally. I can change to some comfortable clothes," she smiled and moved toward the exit door.
Man, I'm an idiot. I should have asked if she wanted to have coffee sometime. Boy, did I blow my chances. Corey grabbed the coffee container on the table and poured himself a cup. I should go home and get some rest, but I can sleep anytime. It's so great to see Justin and Diane happy. They deserve this.
He watched his friend dance with his wife. The couple stared dreamily at each other, oblivious to the crowd around them. The music stopped and a comfortable silence settled on the room. Corey watched a tall figure stride cross the empty dance floor. Clad in black leather from boots to headscarf, the figure leaned over and grabbed the microphone from the DJ.
Corey's stomach lurched.
"I need someone to give me a ride to the police station. My Harley's been stolen," the figure removed the glasses and scarf.
Corey groaned when he saw the flash of red hair. I wish my instincts hadn't been right this time.
It was Riona Byrne.
