EXCERPT

“We’re here,” he said, and not waiting for the driver to open the door, he did it himself and leapt from the carriage. Holding out his hands for her, he placed them on her waist and helped her from the carriage.
When they walked through the park, the fallen snow crunched beneath her feet. The sun poked its head from behind the clouds sending sparkles alight on the snow.
“There they are.” She pointed to Ella and Drake and rushed to meet them. Ella and Evie hugged. “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve had so much I’ve wanted to talk to you about,” Ella said then turning to Drake, she laughed, watching him with a twinkle in her eyes, “Time to make your snow angel.”
Drake looked at the snow then back to Ella then, “I don’t suppose I can put this off to the next snowfall.”
“Of course not,” Eveleen answered for Ella. “And you, Logan, I’m waiting.” With hands on her hips, she tapped one foot, grinning.
“After you,” he waved a hand at the ground.
Eveleen laughed delightedly and lying on the ground, she ran her arms and legs across the snow. She stopped and sat up. “That was fun. I can’t remember the last time. Logan?”
He contorted his face in what looked like a grimace. Even though he hesitated, he followed suit and soon a second angel was formed. “Are you happy now?” He stood and drew Eveleen into his arms, kissing her soundly.
“Yes,” her breathless reply seemed to make him beam. They both turned their attention to Drake. Ella sat on her snow angel.
“Well,” Ella patted the ground near her, smiling at her ever so reluctant husband.
He scratched his head. “I suppose if it gets me a kiss and maybe more, I can do just about anything.”
A moment later with the deed accomplished, Drake drug Ella into his arms. Rolling over her, he kissed her soundly to the applause of a few onlookers in the gardens.
“Drake,” laughing she beat his shoulders with her fists. “This isn’t proper. You have to stop before there is more talk about us.”
He roared with laughter, “You should know I’m never appropriate and neither are you. That would be so boring.” He rolled with her, snow cloaking her pelisse and hat.
Seeming to like what Drake was doing, Logan gently tackled Eveleen to the snowy landscape. She laughed, picking up snow in one hand and tossing it at him.
“Oh, you don’t play fair.” He loosely packed a snowball and tossed it at her, missing as she anticipated and ducked.
“I don’t need to be treated like a girl. This isn’t my first snowball fight.” She packed snow and threw it, hitting him in the chest.
“Doesn’t appear that it is.” He reciprocated and the game continued until they were both quite breathless.
With a quick look to Ella, Eveleen signaled to her cousin and snowballs flew at the men. They laughed, running from the onslaught of missiles directed their way, hiding behind a tree while they fashioned more weapons.
The two men appeared on either side, and they were bombarded even as they emptied their arsenal. Laughing again, they raced from their hiding place to see other people had joined in the snow fight.
“Look what you started.” Logan stood behind her, his hand on her shoulder as he put the cold wet snow on her neck.
“Oh! That’s not fair.” She shivered from the cold wetness, pushing away from him.
“It’s a fight. Everything is fair,” he whispered, and seeming to take pity on her, he brushed the snow from her body.
“I want to find privacy. Do you?” he asked her, retrieving her muff and handing it to her.
Moistening her lips, she nodded, wondering what he intended yet she had a pretty good idea. “You don’t mean to do it here?”
“Only if you want to,” he teased.
Her breath caught in her throat. “It’s too cold.”
“We will warm each other.” He grinned and winked.
One hand on her elbow he guided her down a path then another and finally they saw no one. Finding a rock to sit on, he pulled her onto his lap and kissed her hard and deep.
Determined to meet his deviltry with her own, she slipped her fingers inside his coat and finding the fastenings on his shirt, she undid enough to slip her hands inside to meet hot flesh.
“Evie!” he gasped. “Your hands are freezing.”
“I know and I thought you could help warm them up. Isn’t that what you just said?” She smiled sweetly at him.
“Little devil,” he whispered. “You can warm your hands on me any time as long as I can heat mine as well.”
“Don’t think that will be possible with all the clothes I have on.” She wasn’t about to tell him her secret, which Ella had wickedly passed on to her.
“Hmm...there are other tender places, hot places, I can put my hands. If you’re willing.” He drew her pelisse around them, making a tent of sorts with the two of them inside.

Rogue's Angels Present: The Renaissance Club by Rachel Dacus

Please welcome Rachel Dacus author of The Renaissance Club

Rachel Dacus will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

The Renaissance Club
by Rachel Dacus

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Speculative women's fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I blame my mother and a wonderful bookstore in Long Beach, California called Acre of Books, which introduced me to the idea that I could own such books as the Oz books, Nancy Drew, and the rainbow fairytale books. I took the owning one step further and started writing books for myself to read.

2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

A marvelous month-long art history tour of Italy, with a guide so knowledgeable and charming it seems like he could transport me through time. The story fell into place as I wrote a memoir of that fabulous, once-in-a-lifetime experience. I also studied Art History for a year before booking the trip—the course was the reason my husband and I decided to go—and then I spent a couple of years afterward researching Bernini and Renaissance art and artists. There might be a sequel in the not-distant future!

3. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I’m the daughter of a bipolar rocket scientist and I grew up in the race-to-space Cold War 1950s, and then found myself in counterculture San Francisco in the 1960s. That’s a story I’m working on. My favorite writing spot is my couch, with my tiny Silky Terrier perched on a cushion near me. I should have named her The Muse.

3. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

My next novel is a contemporary fantasy. In The Invisibles,two half-sisters try to restore their damaged sisterhood while clashing over their inheritance of a cottage on the coast of Italy, along with its resident ghost, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. After that, I’m planning on a prequel to The Renaissance Club, and I have ideas for a sequel too.

4. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?

It would have to be the fiery, complicated 17th century genius artist Gianlorenzo Bernini! To step into the shoes and mind of a genius for even a day would be an amazing experience. I’m sure it would change my way of creating stores. He was a very story-based sculptor who was also involved with theater. I loved all the research I did on him.

5. Can you give us a sneak peak into this book?

Here’s an excerpt:

A distant clang. The Swiss Guards were closing the outer doors and tourists were scurrying. Where was The Renaissance Club? In a panic, May dashed toward the Baldacchinoand nearly collided with a man who stepped out from behind a pillar.
            “Sorry!” she said, backing up.
            “Signorina, watch where you’re going!”
The young man in black frowned and didn’t apologize. With his long, dark hair and white sleeves rolled up on muscular forearms, he looked like an art restorer. A black jacket was draped over his shoulders. He held a long wooden measuring rod, the kind used by architects centuries ago. Maybe he was rehearsing for some sort of pageant.
“Ladies are not allowed here while I’m working,” he said stiffly. He aimed the rod at the nearest column and sighted up along it.
“I know you!” she exclaimed. She knew him well.
He straightened his jacket and bowed. “Everyone in Rome knows CavaliereBernini. But you may not be here. I need silence. I have a very big work to complete.
His finger pointed up at the four twisted bronze columns, where May was astonished to see no bronze canopy on top. Tons of bronze had simply vanished. She looked back at him. Bernini lifted the instrument and peered up at the nearest column. Her living, breathing idol moved to one side to get a better angle. Lean and strong, he was even more handsome than in his self-portrait.
Now he was so intent on his investigation that he seemed unaware of her and the fact that her pulse was pounding. How had she come here, and where exactly was she?
He lowered the measuring rod, framed the air with his hands, and used his fingers to make rapid computations. He stared at her so intensely that she shivered. She remembered that searing gaze in his self-portrait.
“You’re disturbing me, signorina.” He turned away, clearly expecting her to leave.
How could she possibly move? Here was her genius, his hair curled with wiry energy, materializing the restless mind under it. His prominent cheekbones gave him the Neapolitan look that had embarrassed him and made him fabricate a Florentine heritage. He made a few quick calculations and looked at her again, eyes narrowed.
“I won’t say a word,” she promised.

6. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I trade critiques with several novelists, and we’re all members of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association. We have an online group. It’s made me much more knowledgeable about how to construct a story for a reader. Plus, I get extra pairs of eyes on the book when I’m too close to it. I’ve had wonderful ideas for revisions from my critique partners!

7. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

As a poet, I’ve been submitting work for publication for more than 15 years. I learned that you have to have determination and cultivate a thick skin in order to achieve any level of publication. I consider it part of the job. I had good encouragement from my poet and novelist friends, and although rejections are scary, sharing that with others undergoing the same process makes it workable.

8. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I used to be what they call a “pantser” – just wading into the writing, flying by the seat of my pants, but lately I’ve taken to making brief chapter outlines in order to map where I’m going and how the characters will get there.

9. How do you maintain your creativity?

It saves me every day! I love writing. I take long walks often to summon the Muse, or to work out a plot problem, or find a rewording of an awkward passage. Every day,  I put the creative work first, when my energy is fresh.

10. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?

Bernini, undoubtedly! Genius fascinates me. What makes it occur in one individual and not in countless others? He was an enigma wrapped in a paradox, as they say. Very passionate, but could also be very politically astute and maneuver well.

BLURB:

Would you give up everything, even the time in which you live, to be with your soul mate? That's what young art historian and teacher May Gold must decide when she slips through time's folds to meet the man of her dreams and the subject of her master's thesis -- fiery 17th century genius artist Gianlorenzo Bernini.

In her fantasies May is in his arms, the wildly adored partner of the man who steered Renaissance art into the Baroque. In reality, she has just landed in Rome with her stodgy boyfriend and teaching colleagues for a tour of Italy. She yearns to unleash her passion and creative spirit.

When the floor under the gilded dome of St Peter's basilica rocks under her feet, she finds herself in the year 1624, staring straight into Bernini's eyes. Their immediate and powerful attraction grows every time she meets him during the tour. Passion blossoms, but history says they have no future. Can May thread her way through time, and will she take a perilous risk to begin a magical, exciting new life?

This time travel romance is perfect for lovers of Italy, art, and love stories.

EXCERPT:

He lowered the rod and at last, smiled. Historians had written that his smile could charm anyone, but he had never been painted smiling. What a shame.

“Why are you, a woman, studying my art?” His voice wasn’t deep but it was vibrant, with an Italian lilt. “Women only study languages, lute playing, babies, and needle work.”

“I’m a different kind of woman.” She remembered what a range of women he had known, from models to noblemen’s wives. In his era, women’s decent occupations could be listed in five lines.

“I do not wish to be rude, but because of your sex you cannot study art.”

“I’m an exception.” She enjoyed the way that startled him.

“What are you called?” he demanded.

“My name is May Gold.”

He bowed. “Signorina May Gold, Cavaliere Bernini is at your service! Your golden skin makes me think you are perhaps from Egypt, where women aren’t properly schooled in manners.”

She smiled at what he thought would be an insult. “I’m half Italian and half Jewish. And I am a student of your work, despite my sex.”

“How can that be?”

His superior certainty made the sarcasm pinch, but she knew he couldn’t easily understand. She might as well tell him what he would find unbelievable. “I’m a historian studying Baroque art, and you’re the focus of my study.”

He laughed loudly. “A woman historian? Impossible! And I know nothing of your Baroque. I am merely—” he bowed insincerely “—a genius of sculpture and architecture.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Rachel Dacus is a poet, essayist, and novelist who writes about love and relationships, with a touch of the supernatural. Love and history are the themes of her debut novel, The Renaissance Club, a tale of romance between a young art historian and her hero, the fiery 17th century Italian sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini. Praise for her novel — “enchanting, rich, and romantic” — describes the kinds of love and adventure stories Rachel enjoys, preferably set in exotic places. She has traveled to Italy and India and plans to expand her journeys beyond countries that start with the letter “I”.

She’s the daughter of a bipolar rocket engineer who worked on missiles during the race-to-space 1950’s. He was also an accomplished painter.

Her interest in Italy was ignited by a course in Renaissance art history that culminated in tour of northern Italy. She’s been hooked on Italy ever since. Her essay on Italy, motherhood, and infertility was anthologized in Italy, a Love Story: Women Write About the Italian Experience.

Dacus shows off her versatility in four poetry collections. Her newest is Arabesque.Three other collections are: Gods of Water and AirFemme au Chapeau, and Earth Lessons. She raises funds for arts, human service, and healthcare organizations and takes walks with her way-too-smart Silky Terrier.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
It is as if Mom doesn't hear a word I say. “You know you are a good young man, right? Maybe somewhat lazy and reluctant to maximize your potential and shy of your abilities, but good hearted and not unskilled.”
“Really? Thanks Mom. Now that I know you have complete faith in my abilities, I can finally sleep tonight. Where are we going with this?”
“Think about it. You need someone who can propel you in the right direction, motivate you to become great like your father, help you find ambition. Tamira needs someone with a good heart in this trying time that lies ahead of her. She also needs someone calm like you to reign in her wild side. All I'm saying is, we often grow attached to those who give us an unwavering shoulder to lean on when we need it.”
“You are suggesting I take advantage of Mira?”
I can see Mom's braids swing from side to side as she shakes her head in the dark car. “You would help each other become great. You are both young and come from good families. The Jayms ’s and Kings are among the Rider founding families. But you know that.”
Founding Families, refer to the descendants of the first ten Riders. They are: Jayms and Marutsa from Castle Isle, King and Mackenzie from Dale Island, Govinda, Tanaka and Alavi from Maysaun, Waters, Botha and Masundire from Eagle’s Nest.
Just because Mom isn't a Rider, I sometimes forget she is still a leader's wife. Even among our ranks, building relationships and contacts is important. Politics is not only limited to royal Elders. I have a suspicion, that even though she isn't mentioning it, a relationship between the Grandmaster's son, and the
Chief Whip's daughter would be some poetic justice. It would be the ultimate marriage of the centuries in the Rider community. Not to add, she and Dad would actually become family with their best friends, the Kings.
“So, why didn't you leave me to put the next great marriage into motion,” I grumble, “a premarital baby would have guaranteed a marriage to prevent a major scandal . . .”
“Nyl Jayms the Fourth! If you want to marry Tamira, just say so. Should I put in a word for you with the Kings? Robyn thinks highly of you, you know?”
“Mom!” I am out of words, “Let's just leave that topic alone. After all, you are the one who dragged me out of there and started making suggestions.”
“Do you think I came all the way to check up on a sixteen-year-old who has been training to use his body lotion as a weapon at 3 in the morning?”
I shrug, “Wouldn't be the weirdest.”
“What is that, young man?”
“Nothing,” I say hastily, “why did you drag me out of there then?”
“They want to see you. Now.”
“Who is they?”
Mom parks the car in our garage, “Who else has the power to summon you at this unholy hour? The Council.”
Rogue's Angels Present: Can Dreams Come True by Lindsay Hager
Please welcomeLindsay Hager author of Can Dreams Come True
Krysten Lindsay Hager will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.
Can Dreams Come True?
by Krysten Lindsay Hager
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE  YA

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:
1. What or who inspired you to start writing?
I used to watch soap operas with my mom and grandpa and it inspired storylines that I’d play out with my Barbie dolls. This went on for years until I started writing little stories in notebooks, so I pretty much always knew this was what I wanted to do.
2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
I wanted to take a normal teen and have her get the opportunity to meet (and date) the singer/songwriter she connects with on this deep level. Everyone has a music crush, but this is the guy whose lyrics speak to her and now she gets to see if he’s like what she’s imagined. So it was a lot of fun to bring this idea to life.
3. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I’m finishing up the sequel to Can Dreams Come Trueas we speak. I think you’ll really enjoy the characters journey. Cecily and Andrew’s relationship really deepens in such a beautiful way. I’m working on another YA book as well as an adult book.
4. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?
I would like to be Cecily getting these opportunities to do everything she’s dreamed of and have the big life she’s always fanaticized about. Who wouldn’t want to see what it was like to get a taste of your dream life for a little bit.
5. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?
Sure! Cecily goes along on an audition for her favorite singer’s music video. She gets cast in a bit part in the video and she and Andrew (the singer) connect behind the scenes. Pretty soon she’s in the position of seeing what it would be like to date her ultimate crush and all the funny, cringe-y and awkward moments that go with that.
6. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
I have been in several. Some were more helpful than others and sometimes you can need time away for a bit to work. Writing is all about solitude, but sometimes you need feedback. I did go through a period where I was constantly meeting with critique groups and I needed a bit of time alone to work and write because sometimes you can start tailoring your work to what the group thinks you should be doing and it can take you off course.
7. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I had a professional critique with an editor at a writing conference and she encouraged me to send her my manuscript when I was done and that gave me a boost of confidence. I always tell people when they’re starting out to attend conferences and workshops and classes for a long time before they even consider submitting their work.
8. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
The best advice is to let your characters take you where they want to go. It’s a double edged sword though because sometimes it takes you to a plot line you didn’t intend and you wonder how that will go over with your readers. But I always assume I’m led down a path for a reason, so I just go with what the characters want to do.
9. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I have tried to outline, but I either run out of steam for actually writing the story or it goes in another direction. For a series book or sequel I need a bit of an idea of where I’m going with it, but I don’t do a full outline by any stretch of the imagination.
10. How do you maintain your creativity?
Watching movies/TV and reading is one way that I get inspired. I also collect articles and pictures of things that inspire story ideas.
11. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?
I love Cecily, of course, but Andrew has become very dear to me. There are moments when he will say things that later on, in editing, I realize were deep in my subconscious. I love how grounded he is at a young age in a career that could have him obsessed with his own ego.
BLURB:
Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

I started to feel anxious after lunch. After all, I had been an Andrew fan for a long time, and even though I had seen him in person, this was a huge deal to get to meet him. What if he wasn’t what I had imagined? I didn’t expect him to fawn over me or anything, but what if he was rude or ignored me? It would kill my fantasy of him as being this sweet, quiet, sensitive songwriter who wore his heart on his sleeve while also being kind of a loner/rebel with just a touch of bad boy in him. Oh man, I would be crushed if he didn’t notice me or worse—if he ended up flirting with Harlow.

In all his magazine interviews Andrew always said looks weren’t important to him, and what he noticed in a girl was if she was true to herself. He said he went for “bright girls who were sweet and easy to be with.” Now that I thought about it, that was the kind of fake crap magazines put out about all the teen celebrities. It was like when I saw Lawrence Claibourne, my favorite actor who claimed to be Mr. I’m-just-looking-for-a-sweetgirl-to-read-poetry-to on a red carpet with a model whose boobs were falling out of her dress and had overdone the lip fillers—I mean, you just knew he wasn’t into her for her personality. But Andrew wasn’t like Lawrence. Andrew seemed so sincere and deep. Lawrence had a smirk and you could tell he was a player, but Andrew seemed like he had been hurt and needed to find the right girl who he could open up to and learn to trust again. . .or at least that’s what he said in his last interview.

The final bell rang and my heart shot up to my throat. This was it. I was on my way to meet my crush. From now on, any dreams of him would be marred by the reality I was about to face.

Was it better to keep wondering what if and keep the fantasy alive or to go and actually meet him?
