Jamie will risk everything to shelter and protect the innocent debutante who seduces him with her sweet love.

EXCERPT: Tira's Education

“What the devil,” Jamie mumbled after the incessant knocking woke him up from a deep sleep. “The town must be on fire...the docks, the ships.” His heart racing, he slipped on his buckskins and running his hands through his hair then racing down the stairs, opened the front door.
            Tira Hepburn, what the bloody eyes was she doing at his front door at five in the morning and what was she doing aping a man? For that matter, what was she doing in Baltimore? Tira must have been the reason her cousin Aidan was inquiring about the ships coming in from London. “Can I help you?” he asked out of politeness but wishing he still lay in bed sleeping.
            “I’m here to apply for the job.”
            “What job?” Sleepily, he ran his hands through his hair, unable to take his gaze off the woman on his front porch wearing men’s clothing. Even dressed in that ridiculous outfit she mesmerized him. The only job he knew of was the one for an experienced ship builder.
            “The one building ships.” She smiled, puffing up her chest and settling her hands seductively on her hips.
Obviously, she had no idea how the simple gestures emphasized her femininity.
If he didn’t miss his guess, she sounded indignant, but for some reason he couldn’t fathom, he didn’t want to end the conversation this instant. He had no choice though. His six-year-old daughter was asleep upstairs and needed breakfast before he could continue with this strange encounter. “Come back at eight o’clock. Not here but at the shipyard. I’ll speak with you then and not a moment before.”
            “I went there to begin with but when no one answered my knock, I came to your house. I need this job.” Her voice filled with indignation.
You need this job my ass. “Come back at eight and we can discuss this civilly.” He started to close the door.
            “Promise me you won’t give the job to someone else before the interview.” She smiled at him.
            “Doubt if anyone in town besides you wants the job. The sign has been up for over a month. Besides, there aren’t very many skilled ship builders in town. Are you skilled?” He challenged, hoping she would back down and he wouldn’t have to be at the office at eight.
            “Papa, who is it?”
            “Go back to bed, honey. It’s no one you need to concern yourself with.” Yet he suddenly knew what he wanted Tira Hepburn for. She could be Annie’s nanny. He reminded himself none of the Hepburns could possibly need a job. He was eager to find out more, and the upcoming interview with Miss Tira could be enlightening. Getting to the bottom of this made the day a bit more interesting than he thought it would be. Suddenly, he was eager to start the day and discover what would come of this chance encounter.
            “Papa.” Annie stood beside him, tilting her head slightly and pursing her lips.
            “Who is it?” Tira shifted her position as if she was trying to see beyond his shoulders.
            “She’s no concern of yours,” he told Tira a bit too harshly, his protective nature kicking in. Where Annie was concerned, he would guard her with his life and make sure nothing bad happened to her, ever.
            “I’m sorry,” Tira said weakly. “I didn’t mean...”
            “Of course you didn’t. Come back at eight. I’ll meet you then.” He was surprised at her smile and how that simple gesture affected him, touched his heart in a way he didn’t understand. What on earth was she doing to him?
Awkwardly, she backed away and nearly fell off the porch before she turned and headed away from the shipyard, her hips swaying provocatively as she walked. He felt a crazy urge to run after her and then what? Drag her into his arms and kiss her?
            He remembered her from Drake and Ella’s wedding months ago. She’d been the first woman who found a way beneath his hardened heart since his mistress died in childbirth and left him to raise Annie on his own. Tira Hepburn was not a candidate for his mistress, a wife maybe...
            Lizzy, his mistress, had never wanted to become his wife and after his first marriage, he sure as hell never wanted to be wed again, but he cared for Lizzie and mourned her loss. Before she died, he promised her he would take care of Annie and make sure she would never have to sell her body to make a living.
He was too awake now to go back to bed, so he walked Annie to her bedroom. It seemed she was awake now too.
            “Would you like a big breakfast this morning?” He ruffled his daughter’s hair and delighted in her smile and laughter.
            “Pancakes,” she asked, “and bacon too? Anything but oatmeal.”
            “What ever you want today but don’t get used to this royal treatment. Get dressed and by the time you get down for breakfast, I should have most of it cooked. We can talk then about the rest of the day.” He loved her more than life itself.
            “Who was the lady?” Annie asked.
He chuckled softly. Even his five-year-old daughter knew the person at his door was a woman, not a man. For a quick second the thought of going along with her ruse crossed his mind, but he shrugged it off. Truth was always better than lies, and if he let her work for him, he could risk her life. He wasn’t about to do that. Damian Andrews, her brother-in-law, would have his hide if he hired her. Truth be told, he was more afraid of her sister Amorica.
            Annie stopped at the top of the stairs. “Are you going to get dressed before breakfast? Did you know she was staring at your chest, Papa? Why was she doing that?”

EXCERPT: The Talisman

Buffalo Creek,
South Dakota
1895

Hot, dry air scorched the prairie grass. Sweat slid along his spine. Danger clung to every whisper; seemed to swirl and grow with each passing second. Ivan Civanovich watched the woman below. With deadly purpose, he studied the lady who had hired him--the woman who had bought his gun and perhaps death.
"Reckless courage," Ivan mused.
"Si Senor, she does have what you call a great courage, but I don’t know about the reckless part. She is always so very careful," Pedro said.
"I’m a dangerous man, Pedro."
"This is why she hired you."
"The lady has no business hiring men like me. She’s a woman. She is supposed to nurture lives."
"She needs you to keep the bad men from taking the land away--our home," Pedro said.
Ivan pushed the tip of his hat back from his brows. From his vantage point, he considered the woman while she hung the freshly laundered white sheets on the line. A strange shudder swept through him, his muscles tensing with the sudden feeling he knew this woman, had known her forever. The sensations were too strong, the feelings too acute, and it troubled him because knowing her was impossible.
Her hair, a wild mop of red curls, battled with the stiff, hot wind rising off the prairie. The breeze and her hair flowed in undulating currents between the lines, threatening to tangle themselves in the wire. She bent over at the waist, giving him a perfect view of her backside while she toyed with something on the ground. Seconds later she picked up the object of her curiosity, turned it over in her hands then tossed it aside.
He didn’t like to think about what could happen to her in the next few weeks. She’d advertised for a gun for a hire. She didn’t know what she bargained for, and he’d bet his inheritance she didn’t have any idea what kind of trouble she’d purchased.
When she looked up the hill, his grin widened. She couldn’t see him, but her shoulders tensed and she sucked air. Her hand touched her forehead, shielding her eyes from the blinding sunlight. She scanned the horizon, turning a complete circle before she stopped.
"Good," he said, "she is cautious."
"She knows someone is up here," Pedro announced.
"She’s got more starch in her drawers and the stiffest backbone of any woman I’ve ever seen." Ivan whistled through his teeth, his eyes intent and focused upon the woman.
"Si." Pedro agreed. "She sure enough does but her heart is made of spun gold."
Ivan wiped the back of his hand across his forehead. Beads of sweat dripped down his back. His gaze swept across the barren landscape then followed the line of trees that bordered the creek. He lifted the glasses to his eyes and turned his attention to a spot about a mile north of her ranch. The railroad wanted easement rights. So why wouldn’t she sell to them. "Spun gold, huh." He dropped the binoculars, letting them dangle from their strap around his neck.
"Si, boss."
"I see." Ivan leaned forward, resting his forearm on the saddle horn.
Ivan wasn’t sure he understood. Women had a lot of fine qualities, many of which he didn’t want to live without but a soft, feminine heart shouldn’t be deciding life and death matters.
Spun gold.No, he’d never met a female with a heart of gold, spun or otherwise. He’d never known a woman who wouldn’t betray a man for a piece of gold. Save one, he amended, and his best friend had married her. Alexi Popov had his trials too. He had kidnapped Angela and spirited her away to his home in the Crimea. In the end though, he gave up his title, his land, and most of his wealth for Angela. He followed her back to America and married her.

This is a wonderful tale, full of action, emotion and a bit mystical at times. Enjoy this one.

Rogue's Angels Present: Murder by Munchausen Trilogy by M.T. Bass

Please welcome M.T. Bass author of Murder by Munchausen Trilogy

Murder by Munchausen Trilogy

GENRE  Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:
What or who inspired you to start writing?
Honestly…it was young love—she was blonde with a coy smile and a literary bent who stole my heart away in high school. Creative writing classes continued on into college where my scribbling lasted longer than our affair. There, I met a professor, Robert Flanagan, who took romantic inspiration and pounded me into becoming a real writer.
What elements are necessary components for this genre?
You’ve got to keep them guessing. At the same time, whatever “red herrings” get loaded up into your story, you have to end up in a place that makes sense for the characters and the action. Like Mark Twain said, “It's no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense.”
How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
Four or five years or so ago, The Walking Deadwas huge and it seemed like everybody I ran into was writing new zombie stories. Rather than just jump into an already crowded pond, I tried to figure out who the next big, bad villain would be. I woke up one morning with the very first scene in Murder by Munchausen in my head, with Jake and EC chasing down a murderous android in the warehouse.  The whole idea was that Artificial Intelligence was going to be the next “challenge” to humanity.  And after I got into it, guys like Elon Musk, Stephen Hawkings and Bill Gates started warning about the dangers of AI. It was great.
Do you outline your books or just start writing?
There was one time I tried outlining my story for In the Black.  The outline went just great…but when I started writing out the story, none of the characters followed it at all. I finally gave up. Which leads me to my favorite quote from Robert Frost: “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.”
What expertise did you bring to your writing?
Based upon the number of years I’ve been watching Law and Order, I basically have the equivalent of a PHD in police procedurals. I’ve never done it, but then again I’m a writer, not a cop.
As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I’m just now finishing up the final draft of a sequel to my very first book, My Brother’s Keeper.It’s called Junglelandand follows Hawk as he goes to Congo to fly T-6 Texans against civil war rebels in the 1960s. The manuscript will be going to my editor in the next fews weeks with a fall release. I’ve also started in on the first draft of Murder by Munchausen #4:  Motherless Children. And I have a follow up in the works to Article 15So, I’ll be busy here for a little while.
Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
I’ve been in and out of a number of critiquing groups. I’m lucky to find myself in two for the past few years that have been extremely helpful: The Cleveland Writers Group and the Westside Writers Group.  Unless a character gets particularly rebellious, I pretty much know everything that is going to happen in the story by the time I’m ready for those folks to read it. What I find impossible to imagine is what the reader, traveling down this dark path of mine, sees out ahead, peering out into the headlights trying to figure out what might be coming next. It’s great to hear back what is working and what isn’t in their critiques.
What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
I’ve found that most advice that unequivocally starts out with “always” or “never” is usually, shall we say, misguided—bless their little hearts.  We’re artists, for crying out loud. We’re supposed to be breaking the rules, somewhere…somehow. It has a homogenizing effect that leads to, well, boring reading. It might not always work, but it has to be tried.
How do you maintain your creativity?
There is only one way: getting up every day, sitting my ass down, and writing. To paraphrase comedian Lewis Black, “If you’re thinking about it, or talking about it, or posting about it…you’re not doing it.”
BLURB:
A Cyber Crime Thriller Series: Notorious serial killers digitally resurrected to live & hunt again in hacked replicants, pursued by detectives of the Artificial Crimes Unit.
EXCERPT:
Murder by Munchausen Chapter 1 – The Warehouse
This particular Android Subject apparently went off the rails and killed a luckless pedestrian on his way to a bodega for some iced tea or bottled water to quench his thirst. A one-in-a-million occurrence, but every so often it still happens. Anyone who believes technology is infallible is a fool. The incident didn’t appear all that nefarious when first reported, but shortly thereafter the Atlas data stream went dark and patrol called our unit in. It quickly became obvious we were dealing with a malware hit, not a malfunction. The luckless pedestrian was actually not so luckless, being on what appeared to be the winning side of a particularly nasty termination suit with his ex, who we suspected had outsourced the final settlement to extra-judicial parties.
It might not make sense, but the beloved Media tags it “Murder by Munchausen.” For a price, there are hackers out there who will reprogram a synthoid to do your dirty work. The bad news: no fingerprints or DNA left at the crime scene. The good news—at least for us—is that they’re like missiles: once they hit their target, they’re usually as harmless as empty brass. The trick is to get them before they melt down their core OS data, so you can get the unit into forensics for analysis and, hopefully, an arrest.
EC’s scanner returned a hard ping. His quick double blink put his cross-hairs up on my lens and I followed his eye line to the northwest corner of the building…
