The Accidental Detective book 1

Something Shady at Sunshine Haven

Injured in a bombing, Kate returns to her hometown in Arizona with new scars, a limp, and pain meds that give her brain fog. For the first time in her life, she's starting to feel her age (49), even though she's living like a teenager again: staying with her father, trying to understand why her sister resents her so much, and running into old friends who still think of her as Kitty.

Seeing her mother in an Alzheimer's unit is the hardest part – until an old friend asks her to investigate suspicious deaths at that nursing home. Is a self-appointed "Angel of Mercy" killing patients to end their suffering? Are family members hastening their inheritance? Is an employee extorting money and killing the witnesses? Kate uses her journalism skills to track clues, but the puzzle pieces simply won't fit. If Kate can't uncover the truth, her mother could be next on the killer's list.

Kate has followed the most dangerous news stories around the world. But can she survive going home?

EXCERPT:

My childhood home had faded in the harsh Arizona sun and now showed its age—rather like me. I’d never dreamed of living here again after thirty years of traveling the world. But I needed to rest and heal, and where better to do that than in my parents’ house? In a few weeks—I promised myself weeks, not months, and definitely not years—I would be well enough to return to journalism. “How’s Mom?” I asked.

“Good,” Dad said. “Well, you know. She’s settled in. She can’t wait to see you.”

I didn’t ask if she’d remember me. I hadn’t noticed signs of Alzheimer’s on my last visit, but that had been a year ago.

“Hey, a friend of yours runs the care home. She gave me a message for you. Said it was urgent.” Dad shuffled through the mail on the little table by the door.

I couldn’t think of any friends in Arizona. I hadn’t had any here since my childhood. My friends were scattered around the world, wherever news was happening.

Dad handed me an envelope. I propped my cane against the table so I had two hands to tear open the envelope. The handwritten message inside was brief:

Kitty—Please come see me ASAP. I need your help.

—Heather Garcia

“She sounded . . .” Dad hesitated. “She asked about your journalism and begged me to bring you in as soon as possible.”

GENRE:  Contemporary Erotic Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Can a high school romance that never happened have a second life in a small town?
Tracey Baker got out of Blakes Creek to find her purpose in life. She found it in the theatre scene in New York, but after ten years, she’s ready for a change. Working for the community theatre in her hometown is just what she needs—until she sees Ryan Greene.
Ryan Greene crushed on Tracey Baker in school, but he never thought she’d come back to Blakes Creek. When he sees her at the theatre, he’s determined to win her heart. His daughter Maisey is just as determined. She likes Tracey and sets out to prove her dad is Tracey’s Prince Charming.
Love might conquer all, but with the eyes and ears of the town focused on their relationship, Ryan and Tracey will have to prove they can set the stage alight together.
EXCERPT:
“Okay. Well, why don’t you change out of your costume and into your school clothes for me, then I’ll get you some warm-ups?” Tracey asked. “I’ll have your costume ready for you tomorrow.”
“Thank you.” Maisey skipped to the changing room.
Tracey admired her spunk. The girl did have enthusiasm and rhythm. Tracey turned her attention to Donnah. “I’ve got them all and a few notes. Erin’s fits perfectly now and Maisey’s will be adjusted tonight. It’s nothing drastic.”
“Erin Simec and Maisey are friends, and Erin’s mother is one of the troupe’s biggest benefactors.” Donnah sighed. “She’s also pushy as all get out.”
“And Maisey?”
“She’s here because her father needed somewhere for her to go while he worked. You know her father—Ryan Greene.” Donnah shook her head. “He tries, but he’s got his hands full.”
“Oh?” She remembered Ryan Greene very well. She’d crushed on him all through high school. “Does he need help?” The last she knew he’d married Carol. Was Maisey their daughter?
“With this, yes.” Donnah lowered her voice to a whisper. “Maisey is Jessica’s little girl. She lost custody when she went to jail this last time, but everything hit the fan when she died without a will. Thank God the courts allowed Maisey to be placed with Ryan. He’s all she’s got left. It’s a mess and sad, but he tries so hard, and his two jobs aren’t enough.”
“What about Carol?”
“They split ten years ago. He works for Tom’s Renovation Services and here at the theatre. He’s the head of construction, but you’d think he’s not much more than a worker the way Derek shouts at him. Derek knows Ryan’s a good hard worker and dependable,” Donnah said. “Tom runs him ragged, but so does Derek. Then he’s raising Maisey because his sister was too busy sticking God knows what up her nose then overdosed.”
“Ryan?” She couldn’t wrap her mind around what she’d learned. Ryan wasn’t with Carol, but he’d gained custody of his sister’s daughter, and Jessica had died? It was too much to think about.
“Ryan tries to get Maisey into activities, but everything is so expensive. He can’t afford the gear or doesn’t have time to drive her to the practices. He’s here, so she hangs out with me at the dance studio. I’d love to have her fulltime in the troupe, but if I let everyone dance for free, I wouldn’t be able to pay my bills.”
INTERVIEW
Do you have any tattoos? Where? When did you get it/them? Where are they on your body?
I don’t have any tattoos and have never wanted them. One of my first short stories to be published was about a woman whose husband had left her. As she came to terms with the situation and began to move on, she decided to get a butterfly tattoo. It’s nice having characters to experience things for you.
Is your life anything like it was two years ago?
 Two years ago, the world went crazy with lockdowns, so I’m happy to say it’s nothing like then. We finally managed a trip back to see our parents in the UK and life is slowly getting back to normal. This summer I’m looking forward to the birth of two grandchildren. One in the USA and one in the UK.
How long have you been writing?
Since I was young, but it is only recently that I began to take my writing seriously. Before then I would send short stories to my family and friends for entertainment. After completely some writing course my writing journey took a more professional turn. During these courses, I met several talented debut authors who I’m pleased to call friends. We formed our own support group, and they are my first readers on any new project.
What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?
Take some classes and connect with other writers. Also write every day, even if it’s only one paragraph or page. A page a day gives you a first draft in a year.
Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.
In the Vassal of Magic – The Virus of Beauty Book 3, Myra discovers who her biological father was and discovers a secret about her origins and her connection with Nipits, her cat.
When his father dies under mysterious circumstances, the same day the Mages Crystal shatters, Wilf is plunged into the middle of a political struggle between the witches and wizards in the Magical Realm. “Wilf, is that you?” Reginald’s shout was followed by a creaking sound from the basement stairs.
Wilf bolted for the front door. His shoes crunched on the broken glass. He jerked open the door and the bell gave a traitorous jingle. He shot out of the store and back into their living quarters. He barged into the kitchen.
“What happened?” Myra asked, putting down the bread knife.
He threw himself onto a chair, poured cornflakes and milk into a bowl, and shoveled a spoonful into his mouth.
“Wilf,” Myra said, taking on the adult tone she’d started using two years ago, when she’d turned eighteen. “I take it you didn’t find your card in the store.”
“It wasn’t me,” he mumbled through his mouthful of cereal. “But I’ll be blamed. Tell him I was here, having breakfast.”
“Why am I covering for you again?” She folded her arms and tried to look more imposing than her five-foot, two-inch height would allow.
Wilf’s spoon leaped from his hand and splashed into the bowl with the first heavy footstep on the stairs. The faucet stopped dripping and the clock held its next tick. The small kitchen in the Gilvarys’ Hong Kong apartment held its breath.
The kitchen door flew open, and revealed his father, shaking with rage. After a moment, Reginald thrust his hands into his pants pockets.
“You’ve shattered the Mages Crystal.” His lips formed a thin line on his angular face. “It’s been in our family for generations.
passion for what could be drove her forward when faced with everyday struggles. Her first memorable skirmish with gender inequality came at nine-years old when she was told that only boys were allowed to play soccer. In response, she simply refused to do any classwork until
Her dream to travel was finally realized in 1990 when she moved to New York City, USA with her husband and the first of three sons. This was the steppingstone to a lifelong adventure that has taken her and her family to India, Belgium and Hong Kong.
Raising her family in multiple countries around the world, she saw that each move, while a shock, was an opportunity for her sons to redefine themselves against new challenges and different cultural norms. Now, that her sons have left home, Carolyn has used her passion for
the fantastic to create a world where every day gender inequalities are at the forefront of a world ending conflict. She shares this story through the eyes of a young man who is suddenly thrust into this new world along with all of his own woes and prejudices. The introduction to this world
Compassion for Life
by Philip W Mason
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Self-Help, Non-fiction  {as in (Body, Mind & Spirit / Inspiration & Personal Growth)}

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
During life, everyone experiences difficult struggles and pain. The relief from this pain can come when either we recognize that we are only human and make an appropriate change for the better or when another person helps us recognize it and encourages us to make that change. These two phenomena are called self compassion and compassion and are great powers that people possess to make life better. They are the first steps to take towards a healing process that results in one being able to enjoy and share all the wondrous experiences that life has to offer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Now I’d like to focus on one’s own mental pain and how we can achieve reduced suffering by increasing self-compassion. An example of the mental pain could be that caused by the death of a loved one. We can now use one of the equations already discussed, one which relates suffering to mental pain and self-compassion:

Suffering = Mental pain / Self-compassion

to better understand how suffering—which is always mental—relates to mental pain and self-compassion. If pain is relatively large, say that from the death of a young child as opposed to that of an older person, then the suffering will also be large. If the old person were to die instead, then the pain would be smaller, and the suffering would be smaller. Suffering of a person is the actual emotional response to the presence of pain. Suffering, according to the equation, also depends on the amount of self-compassion involved. Self-compassion is the emotion of feeling the urge to have lower suffering for oneself. From that urge, what we choose to say to ourselves in response to our pain will determine if our suffering is increased or decreased. In the case of the young child dying, if we tell ourselves positive things our suffering would be reduced. Examples could be: “I was blessed to be able to enjoy my time with him while he was alive.” –or– “I will set up a memorial fund to honor his life.” If however, we say nothing at all, then suffering will stay the same. If we tell ourselves negative things, then our suffering will actually increase. An example of this could be: “I’ll never get over this loss.” –or– “This is my fault somehow.”

Here are some other examples of things that we can say to ourselves when we have self-compassion in order to reduce our suffering.

• I am only human and doing the best that I can.

• I am only human, and I made a mistake. I will now move forward to make things better.

• I am only human, and I need help.

INTERVIEW

Tales From Cloud Canyon

An interview with Dr. Rachel Kowert

What or who inspired you to start writing?

The initial inspiration for Tales from Cloud Canyon came to me in 2019 when my daughter was 4 years old. I was lucky enough to pick up about a hundred different paperback books at a garage sale of a former teacher and had started reading her a new book every night before bed. After a few weeks of this, I started to notice a theme: there were very few books with female protagonists and when there were, they were pigeonholed into a damsel in distress or only successfully navigated their challenges with the use of superpowers. While there is nothing wrong with a female superhero or a knight in shining armor, I wanted something different.

After a bit of digging, I realized there was a dramatic lack of representation in children’s literature. The Nielson 2018 book scan report found that of the top 100 best-selling children’s books, 1 in 5 did not feature a single female character, only 2 out of the top 100 featured a black, Asian, or minority ethnic character in a central role ( with 70% of the black, Asian, or ethnic characters were in non-speaking roles) and only 1 out of the top 100 featured a disabled child but they did not speak or have a key role.

Fueled with discontent, I called my friend who runs a small micro press and told her she needed to write or commission some books with strong female characters at the heart of them. She told me I should write them. At the time, this made me audibly laugh! However, after sitting with her words and fueled by her encouragement, I decided to open up my notes section in my phone and give it a try. In less than two weeks I had written what ended up becoming the first collection in the Tales from Cloud Canyon Universe: the 26 stories of Pragmatic Princess. In 2019, I successfully kickstarted these stories as the collection Pragmatic Princess: 26 Superb Stories of Self-Sufficiency and raised more than $25,000 in 30 days and earned an INDIES award for educational children’s picture books.  So I guess I can write children’s books.

Over the last few years, I have continued to write and expand the Cloud Canyon universe and am excited to announce that I am launching a second Kickstarter June 4 for a BRAND NEW collection of three topical short stories: Here, There, & Everywhere, Invisible Friends, and The Secret to Success. These stories were the ones that I felt were still missing from my children’s library.

What elements are necessary components for this genre?

Something fun, entertaining and inclusive. Children’s literature provides such an opportunity to be silly and light-hearted, but there is no reason we can’t also learn a thing or two along the way.

What expertise did you bring to your writing?

As a mom and a psychologist, I feel like I had a unique perspective to bring when it came to crafting the actual building blocks of the stories. The fictional characters in childhood stories are some of our earliest teachers. We learn a range of things through the observation of these symbolic models, such as what is right and wrong, desirable and undesirable behavior, gender roles, norms, stereotypes, and more. The role of models is particularly influential in childhood as it can have a long lasting impact on intellectual, social, emotional and moral development. Knowing this, I incorporated what we know from the science of writing and learning in to the stories themselves through the story narratives, the cast of diverse characters, and the use of a rhyming scheme.

For example, all of the stories from Tales from Cloud Canyon are written in rhyme. That was a strategic decision, not only because reading books that rhyme are more fun for the reader (as a mom of three I can absolutely attest to that) but research has found that books that rhyme are easier to memorize for younger children, helping them to transition into the pre-reading stage of development. This is an important milestone as it helps build confidence for reading and interest to further engage with reading. Rhyming is also an important part of reading success and it has been found to encourage the development of rhyming skills.

What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I am a huge fan of college football (Hook ‘Em) and everything to do with The Witcher (the books, the games the television show).

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I hope to continue to expand the male-centered stories to add to the Cloud Canyon universe and publish a collection of 26 male-centered stories as a companion volume to Pragmatic Princess sometime soon!

If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?

Winnie the Wise always has a good piece of advice to give her friends, no matter the situation. I would love to be that person for my friends, so I would have to choose her!

Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?

One of the books in this new collection is Here, There, & Everywhere, which tells the story of Eli and Ophelia. discussing what happens after someone passess away. Ophenia notices Eli isn’t at school one day only to find he is at home mourning the loss of his grandmother. This is a story about death, dying, and grief told in a child appropriate way from a faith-agnostic perspective. Meaning, it would be just as appropriate in a religious home as it would be in a non religious home.

This book was written to tackle one of the biggest questions that children ask when losing a loved one: what happens when we die?

In the words of Ophelia:

“Well, that is a really big, difficult question,

There are a lot of ideas, superstition.

Some say you go up in to Heaven in the sky,

And reunite with everyone who passed you by.

Others say you come back here as something different,

A bird or butterfly, something significant.”

“But whatever happens, a part of them stays here,

Inside of all the people they’ve met and held dear.

We hold pieces of everyone we’ve loved, embraced,

Those who are still here and those in a different place.”

“Though she’s not here, your grandma is a part of you,

Who you are and the things that you think, say, and do.

The way your hair springs up, your encouraging gaze.

Those are just two of the many possible ways.

So really you two will always be together,

In your heart and your mind, today and forever.”

When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

My friend Lizzie was the first to encourage me to dive head in and try to write on paper all of these ideas that were swirling in my head. All it really took was that one piece of encouragement to set me on the path that I am today.

What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

The best advice was just keep trying. I have received a lot of rejection letters in my day, and while they are discouraging I never let it stop me completely. When you have a passion and desire, you can’t let anyones discouragement stop you from doing everything you can to attain your dreams. In this case, publishing my work.

Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I start with a general idea of the topic of the book. For instance, I knew I wanted to write a book about death, dying, and grief. I then decided which characters would lead the story and based on that, the story organically grows out of how I think these two characters may interact. No real outline, just rough ideas.

How do you maintain your creativity?

I find my creativity comes in waves and the key to maintaining it is dropping everything and tapping in to it when feeling inspired. This may mean not writing anything for months or writing just an idea for a book, a name and rough concept, or writing two complete stories in a single day!

Who is your favorite character in the book? Can you tell us why?

I really love the character of Yanni in The Secret to Success because despite the fact that he struggles to learn new things, he keeps trying (and encourages others to do so as well).

Are you plotting bunnies, angels or demons?

Probably bunnies. Fluffy, snuggly, fast moving bunnies.

THE STORIES

Tales from Cloud Canyon is a series of character driven, topical short stories celebrating the everyday child, doing everyday things, with their everyday abilities designed for children aged 3+.  Developed by a research psychologist and mom of 3, these stories were developed to be entertaining, educational, and celebrate the power of the everyday within our the beautiful, diverse world.

This Kickstarter collection features three topical short stories from the Cloud Canyon Universe: Here, There, & Everywhere, The Secret to Success, and Invisible Friends. Each of these titles are fully illustrated from artist Randall Hampton and are about 25 pages long.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE WRITING
The fictional characters in childhood stories are some of our earliest teachers. We learn a range of things through the observation of these symbolic models, such as what is right and wrong, a desirable and undesirable behavior, gender roles, norms, stereotypes, and more. The role of models is particularly influential in childhood as it can have a long lasting impact on development.

Each story in this collection was developed to not only be entertaining but educational as well, with the stories' characters modeling a range of age-appropriate skills spanning four areas of human development: intellectual, social, emotional, and moral. The skills that are modeled within any particular story are displayed on the back cover of each book and explained in more detail on the last page of the book.

DIVERSITY, REPRESENTATION & INCLUSION
Tales from Cloud Canyon changes the narrative by reflecting and celebrating the beautiful and diverse reality of our world. The characters within the Cloud Canyon  Universe were developed to represent a range of shapes, sizes, abilities and disabilities, and traditional and non-traditional families.

In the Cloud Canyon universe:
-More than half the characters are female
-More than half the characters come from an ethnic-minority background
-1 in 10 characters have a visible disability
-Characters come from traditional and non-traditional families
-Different body shapes are represented
-she/her, he/him, and they/them pronouns are represented

It was also equally important that these details were not the central theme of the stories themselves as our shape, level of ability, and what our family unit looks like are just some of the many parts of who we are and not necessarily the defining feature of our stories.

PRODUCTION AND RELEASE
All of the stories have been written and are currently being brought to life through the illustrative magic of Randall Hampton. The physical production of the books is expected to start in June 2022. Time from production to shipping is about 6 - 8 weeks (+/- 2-4 additional weeks due to COVID delays). Once Rachel receives the books, they will be shipped to backers. There is an expected arrival date of the books no later than November 2022.

EXCERPT:

Here, There, & Everywhere Is the story of Eli and Ophelia. Ophelia notices Eli isn’t at school one day only to find he is at home mourning the loss of his grandmother. This is a story about death, dying, and grief told in a child appropriate way from a faith-agnostic perspective. Meaning, it would be just as appropriate in a religious home as it would be in a non religious home.

Excerpt:

“First we are kids, then grown ups, then wrinkly and old,

And life is a cycle that way, so I’ve been told.”

Eli paused and looked back up at his friend,

“But what about after? What happens in the end?”
