TWILIGHT'S ENCORE
by Jacquie Biggar

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
One man's betrayal will seal another's fate.
Ty Garrett fell in love with Katy Fowler from the moment they'd met. When her father’s betrayal yank the young couple apart, Ty becomes bitter.
After a decade away, Katy returns to Tidal Falls with plans to get married in her family's theatre. But she hadn't expected to run into Ty Garrett, the boy she'd never forgotten.
When unseen forces endanger their lives, can Ty save Katy and win back her love, or is it too late for these two star-crossed lovers?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

On the steps of the theatre stood an angel gilded in white and gold. Her hair glittered like spun silk in the morning sun, while the filmy white dress she wore made him think of all kinds of sin. For once in his life, Ty Garrett was struck silent. He knew seeing Katy again would be hard, he just hadn’t realized how cruel fate could be.

“Ty. I should have guessed.”

He hadn’t expected her to jump into his arms—though she’d seemed quite happy to do just that with Jared—but would it kill her to at least pretend she was glad to see him?

“You’re late.”

Apparently it would.

“Well you know me, sugar. Laggard that I am, getting up before noon is something of a stretch.” If she wanted to think the worst, he didn’t mind playing along.

“It’s been a long time, Ty. You look… older.” She brushed an impenetrable glance over him, rubbing at already raw emotions.

“You don’t. You look like the same spoiled teenage brat you were the last time you stood on those stairs.”

No way in hell was he going to admit seeing her again affected him. He’d learned his lesson. Give her an inch, and she’d take a mile.

Katy smiled—a Cheshire cat kind of smile—as though she knew anyway.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I thought I’d share with you the beginning of my love affair with writing.

Normally, procrastination is my enemy. I like to get done whatever it is, as soon as I can, so that I don’t have to worry about it any more.

In school I worked hard to stay in the top ten every year. So when I came down sick with the measles and missed two weeks of grade nine, I was devastated. How was I ever going to catch up? I had less than a week to write a compelling story for Language Arts or get a failing mark.

Angry and frustrated, I sat in our living room, pen and paper in hand, staring at a bright yellow bouquet of cheerful looking daffodils. I wanted to hurl them across the room. It wasn’t fair. Why was I being punished for getting sick?

But then an idea popped into my head. A silly, farcical story. If the teacher wanted an essay, fine, I’d give him one. And so, Count Daffodil, was born. After the first paragraph the words flowed quicker, I could see the scene in my head and needed to get it down on paper. (Sound familiar?) I spent the rest of the day writing, and by the end of the night I had my story.

The next day I turned it in and immediately felt ill all over again. It was dumb. The teacher was going to hate it. I’d be a laughing stock. Funny how easy you can build something up to catastrophic proportions when you lack self-confidence.

We had to wait two weeks for the results. I was on tenterhooks the entire time. Sure that my mom would blow a gasket because I’d goofed instead of giving it my best shot.

Then came the big day.

I was scared to look. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore and turned to the last page. These were my teacher’s words:

I’m glad I didn’t read this at night. It’s been a while since I was so enthralled with a story. Very professionally done. The suspense, the ending, the style was excellent. I think I’ll read it to the other classes. Very impressive.

Not only did he read it to the other grade nines, he read it over the intercom to the entire school!
Because of Mr. Thomas and a hapless bouquet of sunny daffodils, a writer was born.

Jacquie's first book, Tidal Falls, a romantic suspense novel about second chances, released September of 2014.

Rogue's Angels Present The Maid's Quarters by Holly Bush

Please welcome Holly Bush author of The Maid's Quarters.

 THE MAID'S QUARTERS

by Holly Bush

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
1893 . . . Alice Porterman is released from her duties as a maid and travels home to help her mother care for her sickly brother. But her mother and brother are not in their family home when Alice arrives and she learns the landlord, Albert Donahue, has evicted them into the harsh Boston winter. Alice goes in search of him and is surprised at what she finds.
Albert Donahue, an up-and-coming member of Boston’s elite, made his fortune through hard work and shrewd business deals. But his dreams of a family to share it with have not come true, perhaps until an impertinent young woman enters his home and won’t leave until she speaks to him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Boston 1893
Chapter One

Alice Porterman looked at Mrs. McKinnell. “What do you mean Ma and Jimmy aren’t living here anymore? It is our house!”

“They’re living in two rooms at the back of the church, Alice. I would have taken them in here, but I have no room, none at all,” Alice’s mother’s closest neighbor said to her. “You better get them, girl. Jimmy wasn’t doing well the last time I stopped by. Your mam can hardly leave him to get victuals or go to work. I’ve been shopping for her when I can.”

“Thank you, Mrs. McKinnell. I’ll go right away.” Alice turned and looked at the narrow two-story home where she’d grown up. “I’ll just put my bags in the house,” she said, and started down the walk that separated the Porterman and McKinnell homes as she had just arrived from the train station coming from Washington.

“Nay, you can’t, girl. They’ve changed the locks. Your mam couldn’t even get back in to get your brother’s medicine. Leave your cases on my porch. I’ll have one of the boys carry them in and we’ll keep them here until you’re settled somewhere.”

“Thank you, Mrs. McKinnell,” Alice said, red-faced. “I will get them as soon as I get this straightened out.”

“Don’t worry, Alice. Just get your mother and brother back home where they belong.”

Alice nodded and kissed the plump, red-headed woman’s cheek. “Thank the Lord you were here to help Ma.”

“It’s nothing. Neighbors do for neighbors. Your mam would do the same for me, she would. So, your mother had Jimmy read me the letter she got from you that those rich nobs are paying you without you even working for them. La-de-dah! And look at them skirts of yours! That is fine wool, is it not, with them lacy petticoats sticking out? And a pretty little hat to boot!”

Rogue's Angels Presents: Queen of Clubs by Katie de Long

Please welcome Katie de Long author of Queen of Clubs

Katie de Long is awarding a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter a signed copy of a Queen of Clubs novella plus a handcreated pendant (US only).

Queen of Clubs, Season One
by Katie de Long

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The exotic dancers and employees of the Queen of Clubs walk a fine line, with only wits, beauty, and market savvy to keep them from toppling into the shark pit. Ride shotgun through lapdances, romance, and sexual awakenings. Don't worry, these girls won't ask what your hands are doing under the tip rail.
This collection contains all seven novellas in the first season of Queen of Clubs. They contain adult language and mature content, and can be read standalone or in order.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

from -Queen of Clubs: Marina

I work to keep my mouth shut as Alina leaves. Even for her, this is kinda jerky, not just flakey.

Evan sighs.

“Everything okay?” I have to feel bad for him—he doesn't seem particularly talkative, so he's probably more upset than he wants to let on.

“It's fine,” he shrugs as he speaks. “Something's just been a bit off, lately.”

“I'm sorry.” I genuinely am. I want to smooth out the crease in his brow.

“Maybe it's just a shelf life thing. I travel enough that relationships tend to go bad really fast with me, and a few years back, I just sort of gave up. It was easier to make friends with someone while I was around, and treat them as though I was giving them all of my attention at one time, to make up for being gone, instead of trying to keep a relationship going long distance. But those always have shelf lives, too. Things can only stay static for so long before they change, or pull apart.” He stares past my shoulder, and rakes strong fingers through his hair.

I know I shouldn't, but I have to ask before I get any deeper into this.

“Are you in love with her?” He meets my eyes, and for a moment can't speak. I shrug and change the topic.

“It's probably nothing. Maybe she just, I don't know, wants more of her friends to know her other friends, or wasn't up to tonight but didn't want to leave you in the lurch saying no,” I offer.

Rogue's Angels Presents: Northwoods Wolfman by Scott Burtness

Please welcome Scott Burtness author of Northwoods Wolfman.

Scott Burtness will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

 Northwoods Wolfman
by Scott Burtness

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When Dallas is recruited by an ancient order of monster hunters, he's more than happy to sign up. The self-proclaimed Hero of Trappersville did kill a bloodthirsty vampire, after all. As far as Dallas is concerned, monsters are monsters, and they have no place in Wisconsin.
Or do they? And does Dallas really get to choose which side he's on?
Book Two of the Monsters in the Midwest series.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Even though it was faint, he recognized the smell. Taking a few tentative steps, he caught it again. Fixing it in his mind, he continued forward, slipping through the underbrush, stepping over fallen logs, and crouching under low-hanging branches. As he moved, the scent became incrementally more pronounced. He was passing by an old, crooked ash tree when his nose pulled him to an abrupt stop. Leaning in, he smelled a handful of leaves sprouting from a low branch. Beneath their leafiness, he smelled sweat, deodorant, maybe even cheap aftershave?

“Randall? It’s Randall. Son of a bitch, that’s gotta be him.”

Dallas swung around in a slow circle as he searched for traces of the scent. It didn’t take long to find it on another branch further into the trees. Soon, it was like a neon trail had been lit up just for Dallas. Every branch and leaf Randall had brushed against was emblazoned with his scent. Unquestioning, Dallas followed his nose.

Fixated on following the smelly trail, he almost forgot his original intent. Fortunately, a voice coming from just past the next rise brought him to his senses.

“… not much. I cast around for a bit, but I don’t think we gotta worry about a wendigo. And that ‘squatch scat was a least a week old. No fresh tracks, so it’s probably up in the Michigan U.P., maybe even Canada by now. Damn things got territories bigger than John Wayne’s balls.”

Editors - Can't live with them, can't shoot them

What do you want in your editor?

Edit: To compile, arrange and amend for publication.

Editor: One who prepares manuscripts, copy, etc. for publication.

Thank you Doubleday for the definition of an Editor. The biggest issue with being an editor is living up to the perception of the writer. So I ask the question again: What do you want in your editor?

Do you want someone who will rave over the literary perfection of your work? Do you want a rubber stamp on all you do?  If that's the case, send your work to your best friend or your mother. They'll fill the bill.

It is the responsibility of the editor to spot the misspellings you keep overlooking; to be the first to let you know if you've strayed from the line of your story because, believe it or not, we are vested in your success.

Our publishing house, Rogue Phoenix Press, is owned by an author whose journey into publication was fraught with potholes and frustrations. And that was with an editor she was extremely fond of and worked with well. She knows the tribulations of writing and having her work published.

While Rogue Phoenix is in the business of publishing and creating income for us all, they aren't the usual publishers. Because of the owner's personal experience, Rogue Phoenix's goal is to publish those writers, those talented souls, other publishers have had the blind misfortune of discounting.

Hence the need for editors with an understanding of the company's vision and the trials of the writer. And because we editors are talented writers ourselves, we wonder if our vision of the writer's work will translate to the author as positive improvement or come across as story bashing.

Rogue Phoenix and the editors' goals are to create the very best version possible of the writer's tale. It is our sacred duty to honor the authors' goals and be true to their story; sometimes in spite of what we think should work. The story, and it's characters, belong to the writer. We editors are here to nip/tuck any nigglies hanging out and make sure the final package is the best we can offer.

In the end, the book is what the author envisions and we, the editors, are charged with making it so.
