Sins of the Father
by Lisa Beth Darling

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Family centered drama
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:

1. What elements are necessary components for this genre?
The Sister Christian Series and more pointedly this novel, Sins of the Father, is a contemporary family drama. As with all genres, every story needs strong characters facing conflict either from within or without to build tension and make it interesting.

2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
I started writing this series a few years after I made contact with my birth family and discovered I had three brothers. I was raised an only child so the idea that I had siblings was rather new to me, growing up I often wished I had a sibling but then I'd go to my friend's houses and see how they interacted with their siblings and went home happy I was an only child. The idea of the brother/sister dynamic always interested me even when my friends were shouting at each other over nothing. This series and a lot of its contents, planted deeply in the fertile ground of a writer's imagination, grew out of those two situations.

3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?
Genesis, the first book in the Sister Christian Series opens with Doctor Richard Mason reading a letter informing him his father, James Rice, has died and Mason has been put in charge of his sister, Hannah Rice. Problem is, Mason is in his early 50s and had no clue he was adopted until that very moment. Luckily for me, I've always known I'm adopted but once when I was little a friend took it upon herself to tell me that because she'd found out from someone and was completely upset that this fact was being hidden from me. I still remember the worried look on her face as she took my hand told me the 'news'. I can still her astonishment when I replied: "Is that it?"

I really liked the idea of opening the whole series that way with one great big secret revealed on the very first page.

Hannah has known for decades that Rick is her brother, her mother told her just before she committed suicide leaving Hannah in the care of her father, James Rice. Hannah had a very unpleasant childhood. When we meet her, she is a troubled woman both physically and mentally who has spent 30 years of her life in one group home or another.

I suppose, in a lot of ways, that's exactly how I felt at that point in my life dealing with shuffling through all of the adoption and birth family stuff. I felt as though I'd been shuttered away somewhere for 30 years and was finally coming into the light. Although it wasn't in the ways I would have expected and that we all hear about on TV Talk Shows and on the Huffington Post. I grew stronger from the experience and, over the course of the series, so do Mason and Hannah as they deal with dark family secrets and their own failings.

4. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I'm currently working on finishing up the Sister Christian Series with the last book, Prodigal Son. I hope it will be available in the summer. It should tie everything up nicely and give my readers the one thing they always crave from me and I hardly ever give them; a happy ending.

5. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?
Nick Jackson. He's tall, broad, dark, handsome, very intelligent, loving, caring and is not afraid to stand up to Mason when it comes to Hannah. Mason is quite the curmudgeon, he's absolutely brilliant at what he does but totally clueless when it comes to the Human Condition, most especially his own.

6. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?

"Yes," he said, "that's when and where I learned there was no God. At St. Mark's."
Hannah didn't know what to do or say all she knew was that she was damn angry. How dare he stand there and deny the existence of God! Who the hell did he think he was? World famous doctor or not, who was he was to say that God didn't exist?  There was a word for that. A big one. "Ba-bab-ba-ba-bbb-b—"
"Bbbbb…what?"
Hannah stared up at him from her wheel chair with smoking eyes as she gripped the armrests until her fingers turned white. Feeling as though she might bust a blood vessel or something as she sat there straining to control her anger as she fought to find the word. The big word.  "Ba-lasss-fffaa-me!" Hannah pushed the word through slotted lips.
"Blasphemy."  Mason repeated and began to put forth his argument but then pulled back the rancid comment rising on his tongue as a different thought took over. "Blasphemy? Damn…good one." He complimented, yes, that had to be a very hard one to get out, but that didn't stop him from continuing. "It's not blasphemy if God really doesn't exist. And He doesn't."
"You take that back!" Hannah shouted. "Now! Rright now!"
"No," he said in a snarl, "I won't."
Hannah put her hands on the wheels of the chair and backed away from him.
"Where are you going?"
"Ah-way from the light-n-ing bolt."
"God's not gonna strike me dead. He can't. He doesn't exist."
That was it for her, Hannah rudely pointed toward the bedroom.  It was one thing not to believe in the same God that she did, Hannah understood that some people believed different things but to deny His existence altogether had to be the most self-centered arrogant thing she'd ever heard.  "Go."
"I'm not gonna go to my room. You're not my mother." He sniped.
"This is…my room now…you go."
Mason looked around the living room, Hannah was still sleeping out here, and since she wanted to be alone and not have this conversation with her egotistical big brother, he was being banished to his room for the rest of the night. "Are you kidding? You can't order me around. This is my house!"

7. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I think on them a while and then, when I'm ready to give myself over to the Muse, I do so and follow wherever he leads. I always have an idea of where we're going but not necessarily of how we're getting there.

8. How do you maintain your creativity?
I try not to lose faith. It's when I lose faith in myself and my ability to pen a good story for nothing more than my own amusement that the dreaded Writer's Block hits. I won't lie it can last a very long time but it's mostly nothing more than a lack of confidence.

9. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?
I adore Mason and Hannah equally but, in the end, Hannah would be my favorite. For all she's been through, everything she's suffered, and all that's been taken away from her, she's still smiling and looking forward to a future that gets a bit better for her with each passing day. She brings a lot of light to Mason's lonely world.

10. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?
My Muse is about 40% nice-guy and 60% warrior so he always leans toward the darker harder hitting things we can do but every now and then he surprises me and turns into a ball of mush.

BLURB:

As Hannah recovers from emergency brain and heart surgery, memories of the past overtake her dreams with such clarity they cannot be denied. As the last of the painful family secrets come to light it's up to her brother, Doctor Richard Mason, and his unconventional methods to help her confront the ugliness.

EXCERPT:

Running a hand over the side of his close-cropped gray head Frank tried to keep his cool as he pled his case, "Look, I just want to see Hannah, are you going to let me in there or not?"

Mason seemed to think about it for a second even though he really wasn't. "Ummm…not." He said finally. "She doesn't want to see you."

"She told you that? I don't believe it."

"Well, you could go and ask herself…oh, wait, that's right…you can't go in there. Guess you'll just have to take my word for it."

"Yeah, like that's worth anything."

"Some people think it is." Mason retorted as he held out his cupped hands, "Some people put their lives right here.  Crazy, right?"  From the look on the man's face Mason thought he'd stand there and bitch all day long. "While you're waiting for noon to come around, why don't you do Hannah a favor?"

"What's that?"

"Tell me about the two years between her accident and the birth of my pre-maturely deceased nephew."  He watched Frank's mouth drop open. "Take a load off." Mason said and gestured toward the chair opposite his desk. "In fact, why don't you just tell me everything you know?"

"She told you about Little Ricky?" Frank asked as he leaned forward but the question was more directed to the air than anyone in the room. "She's never spoken about him…ever."

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

It was in the 4th grade when Lisa Beth Darling discovered she was a naturally gifted writer. For her very first creative writing assignment, the teacher asked the class to pen a story about a baby bird's first flight and read them to the class. Putting pencil to paper, Lisa was instantly whisked away by a force she couldn't explain. When they were finished, all of the children read their happy stories to the class. Not Lisa. She got up and told of how the baby bird flew too high, hit a plane, crashed to the ground and died. She told of how the mama bird and daddy bird cried of how even God was upset sending the rains pouring from the sky. The class was speechless when she finished all they could do was stare at her. The teacher kept her after class told her the story was very good but it was different from the others. She asked Lisa if she'd ever heard of Icarus and had she based her story on him. Lisa had yet to encounter Greek Mythology or hear a whisper of Icarus. As Lisa left the classroom the teacher again told her how good the story was but suggested she might want to write something happier next time. Perplexed,  Lisa turned and asked her teacher: "Why?" The teacher had no answer. Luckily for us, Lisa never took that teacher's advice.

Today she brings us complex multi-layered stories rich with the trials and tribulations that make up the world in which we live. Not one to be pigeonholed into any single genre, Lisa's stories revolve around the intricacies of couples from range the intimacy of lovers, to mothers and sons, and brothers and sisters.

Lisa Beth Darling is 49 years-old, lives in her hometown of New London, CT with her husband of nearly 30 years, Roy.  She is the author of more than fifteen novels along with several short stories and non-fiction books.

TAGLINE

Widow Barbara Langley, sporting a refreshed look, and her best friend, go to Tampa, Florida as she had promised. Along the way she encounters an old flame and new temptation.

BLURB

Widow Barbara Langley, and best friend, Rachel, journey to Tampa, Florida. Barbara left broken-hearted years earlier and returns with her newly surgicized body to mend her grieving spirit. Can she juggle an old love who reappears and the younger man who desires her or will she choose to return to the Northwest still single?

EXCERPT

"You are the one my cards have foretold to me." She nodded at Rachel who stood behind Barbara, her mouth gaping.
"I beg your pardon?" Barbara moved back stepping on Rachel's toe.
"Ouch!"
"Sorry."
The blonde women stopped before Barbara, tossing a fearful look in Rachel's direction, before reaching out and gently lifting Barbara's hand to her, palm up, and peered at the opened extremity. She took a bejeweled, ruby-tipped finger and traced the lifeline. Her dark brown eyes peered deeply into Barbara's.
"You have recently suffered a great personal loss."
Rachel harrumphed behind Barbara.
Ignoring Rachel, she continued, "You have come home seeking a glimpse of the past to answer questions of old. You will have to make a decision between two—brothers?—which will change your living arrangements as well as your life..."
Before she could continue, Rachel grabbed Barbara's elbow and propelled her toward the front door, muttering under her breath, "Any fool can see the white circle where your wedding ring used to be and, of course, you're seeking something. You came into this bloody shop. What a fraud."
The blonde turned and softly called to the retreating backs of the two friends, "By the way, Dylan says you are headed in the right direction, and he wants to thank you. Now he can rest."
Barbara's planted her feet to the floor. She whirled and, grasping her throat, whispered, "Dylan?"
The blonde approached warily, glancing at the furious face of Rachel looking over the head of her friend.
"Yes. He said you"—she pointed at Rachel—"would not believe me, but he was finding it difficult to get a message through to you. Barbara, he wanted very much for you to know the quest you have taken is the first step to setting him free. He knew he was your second choice."
Barbara gasped, tears welling in her eyes, "He never said a thing."
"He has told me to thank you for all the years of love you gave to him, and says he wants you to find your first love who also searches for answers."
Rachel growled behind Barbara, "Let's get the hell out of this place." She turned Barbara around and shoved her out the door. Glancing back, she spotted the blonde peeking from the door as they escaped to the car.
"Barbara, you're not going to believe that garbage, are you?" Furrows creased Rachel's brow.
"Well, normally, I would've laughed in her face as we walked out, but she did mention Dylan by name. I mean, how could she know the name of, of... well, you know." Barbara had stopped on the sidewalk and was looking up at her friend.
Pulling Barbara close to the building, she tenderly grasped her friend's hand in hers.
"Winkie..."
Barbara's eyes widened.
"Yeah, I know about your pet name. He told me once when I'd just read him the riot act about his drinking and how it would end your marriage if he didn't get himself together. I hate to dump ice water on your hope but... we were talking about Dylan in there, remember?"
Rachel watched her friend's shoulders droop and the hope flicker and die from her eyes.
"Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. Well, I guess mysterious messages from those who have passed over and voodoo are the tools of their trade. I'm just feeling a little guilty, I guess. I've actually felt happier here than the last two years in Oregon. Hearing his name like that brought back all the pain."
Rachel winced. "Girlfriend, we came here so you could release some of that pain and take a breather from being 'Dylan's poor widow,' remember?" She gathered her friend under her arm, and they moved toward the parking lot.
Barbara slowed her gait and turned to look up at her friend. "I know she has a very good act going, but I never told Dylan he was my second choice. Did you?"
Rachel shook her head and with her hand crossed her heart.
"Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?"
Rachel picked up the pace until they stood at the doors of the convertible.
"No. The woman is good at what she does—selling the occult. Everyone who goes into her shop is looking for something, or they wouldn't stop. The white spot and indentation on your finger, where your ring used to be, indicates you were in a long relationship, which has recently ended. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, when you think no one is watching, you look incredibly sad. It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you might be looking for a new love. That part about two brothers, though; that was taking it just a little too far. You gotta give her this—she's a great actress."

Rogue's Angels Present: Making Headlines by Jennifer Hansen

Please welcome Jennifer Hansen author of Making Headlines.

Making Headlines
by Jennifer Hansen

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I have always loved writing ever since I was a young child. As an avid reader from the age of six, I always aspired to one day write my own book. I started writing stories in Grade Four and have always kept a diary from the age of eight. My teacher in Grade Four, Molly Halliday, was a wonderful mentor and influence. We were instructed to write weekly ‘compositions’ using our imagination to write anything we liked and her feedback and comments about my stories were always so enthusiastic and encouraging – it helped inspire me to become a writer.

3. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

After finishing 20 years in the television industry, I took up the Professional Writing and Editing course at RMIT in Melbourne to hone my creative writing skills. It’s such a wonderful course and helped me enormously. Most writers are advised to write about what they know best for their first novel, so I did that – focusing on the life of a young TV journalist who aspires to become a newsreader.

4. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

I have worked as a journalist in both television and newspapers for more than twenty years. As well, I’ve completed a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT, as well as an Arts Degree at Melbourne University. I have also studied screen-writing; have written several screenplays, a children’s book and have begun work on my second novel.

5. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I also love working out at the gym. Writing is dreadful for the back and neck and it’s crucial to keep as fit as possible. Even if you don’t feel like it, exercise is essential for both physical and mental health and I’ve learnt that unless there’s a deadline – daily exercise even comes ahead of writing!

6. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I’ve already written a children’s book so will be meeting with some people in the coming week’s to discuss this. I’m also working on a second novel called BLACK ANGELS.

8. Can you give us a sneak peak into this book?

Here’s an excerpt from the book from a scene from when the main character, Rachel, (a TV reporter) is editing her news story in a booth with the hot new editor Mitch:

She recorded her voice then joined him in the dimly lit editing booth. The small space had never seemed so intimate. Their thighs were almost touching. Heat seemed to radiate between them. Rachel wondered if he had this effect on all the women he worked with or if it was just her. His hands danced over the complex technology, pushing a myriad of buttons and turning dials. The story was coming together. It was like building a mini-movie, piece by piece. She sensed his excitement as tension built to the crescendo when Leon hurled her notebook against the wall. Mitch’s fingers moved faster, and now their thighs were almost rubbing together as they talked excitedly about which shots should go where.
‘Yes!’ Mitch cried, as the last frame was locked in. ‘Kicking goals. You might have what it takes after all, Rach.’
He squeezed her knee. Rachel glowed. Their eyes met again, but it was something beyond Mitch’s head, on the wall behind him, that caught her attention. In a dark corner was a collection of posters. Playboy posters of women with pneumatic breasts. She removed his hand. His eyes, still playful, became surprised and he turned to see what she’d been looking at. Rachel stood up stiffly and marched out the door.
Mitch went to grab her hand. ‘Rach, we haven’t even …’
She turned back. ‘You know what, Mitch,’ she began, ‘I thought you were some kind of editing guru. But after checking out your taste in interior design, turns out you’re just a bogan with the charisma of a lentil.’

9. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I was part of a writing group after leaving RMIT. We formed a writing group to continue helping to workshop our novels – giving each other guidance and notes along the way. This is a extremely helpful practice – as long as you have members in the group who understand how to give feedback to a meaningful and sensitive way.

11. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

The worst advice I ever received was to send my manuscript to just ONE publishing house and to wait for their response before sending my novel to other publishers. The publishing industry has changed very quickly so I now advise other authors to send your book to as many as possible at once and go with the first offer you get.

12. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I always prefer to outline my story in quite a detailed chapter breakdown, otherwise you can waste a lot of time writing stuff that takes you in the wrong direction. Even if the plot takes a different turn while you are writing – that’s fine Characters can come up with twists and turns you hadn’t thought of, but it’s important to at least have a guide in place. A new plot might take over, but at least you have some direction to start with.

My next book is called BLACK ANGELS, so yes, there are angels!! A darker version perhaps of what we traditionally know as angels, but I’m really enjoying exploring a sci-fi fantasy world. There’s still a lot of romance in this story, but there’s also greater scope for drama and adventure.

16. Anything else you might want to add?

Thanks the Angels

BLURB:

Working as a TV reporter has its challenges, but when Rachael Bentley decides to aim high and become a newsreader, she faces a whole new minefield of explosive scenarios.

Rachel's path sees her pitched against egos in the newsroom, office politics and corrupt politicians, not to mention rampant sexism, and a mystery stalker. Juggling a messy personal life doesn't help, nor does the emotional impact of reporting on life's tragedies and when it all takes a toll and Rachel starts partying too hard, she finds herself making the headlines instead of reading them.

Will she survive a world where dreams are shattered daily and will she find the man who can help her keep her soul?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
‘Then whack! He slams that cricket bat smack down on your desk, missing your hand by a whisker!’ Julia slapped her hands under Rachel’s chin.
Rachel jumped, vibrations ringing in her ears. ‘And this is the man you think could be our new boss?’ she said, spinning her chair around to switch on her computer. As she reached for a notebook a growing unease began to fester. Her fellow reporter had an uncanny knack of being spot-on with rumours.
‘Yep,’ grinned Julia, leaning back in her chair. ‘That’s Helmut Becker for you. Bit of a nut job, but they say he gets results. And it is all about the ratings after all.’
Beyond their desks the usual pandemonium reigned. Early-morning rush hour — TV monitors blaring, phones ringing and people shouting, and Rachel didn’t want the glue that held it together leaving. She stared towards the news director’s office. ‘I wish I could change Tony’s mind.’ It was like the plates beneath her feet were shifting. Too much change, too soon.
‘Fat chance. The media release is already out. And stop looking like that. Anyone’d think you had a boss-crush.’
Rachel turned back to Julia. ‘Don’t be ridiculous. I’m just sad he’s leaving. I mean, he gave me my big break and has always been so supportive. Are you sure this Helmut character is taking over?’
‘That’s the word on the office grapevine. It’s a hundred per cent gossip guaranteed.’
‘Damn. Just when I thought I had a career plan mapped out, a bat-wielding crazy guy comes along …’ She paused as a striking man with shoulder-length dirty-blond hair strode past their desks towards the edit suites at the back of the newsroom.
‘And don’t get hooked on him either.’ Julia rolled her eyes. ‘That’s the new head editor, Mitch. Really rates himself, and hates working with juniors, so steer clear.’
‘You crack me up,’ said Rachel, shaking her head. ‘You know I’m taken.’ She turned back to her computer, inhaling deeply. The editor had left a scent in his wake and it wasn’t aftershave. It was like he’d just shaken the surf from his hair after riding a wave into work. An absurd thought. Who’d go surfing in the middle of autumn? She snuck another look as he walked away, taking in his strong physique. As if feeling her eyes graze the back of his neck, he turned, giving a lopsided grin as he caught her out.
Embarrassed, she smiled back stupidly and sucked in her breath. Damn, he was good looking. She wondered what he was doing at work so early. Surely as head editor he could take his pick of the shifts and leave the early stints for the juniors? She shook her head. She had to stop this. No flirting. That’s what had landed her in enough trouble already.
