GENRE:   Cozy Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:
1. What or who inspired you to start writing?
I began writing mystery novels, in a sense, to heal myself.  I am not a violent person but was angry at the way someone had treated me.  Occasionally, someone in real life irritates me, and my harmless solution was to create a story which concludes with me putting my ‘enemy’ in jail!
2. What elements are necessary components for this genre?
As I classify my writing as a Cozy Mystery, my interpretation of this genre is to feature a murder without involving what I consider as unnecessary descriptive violence.
3. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
At the time, I was living in a partially constructed subdivision.  As my heart doctor had recommended walking on a daily basis for exercise, we took a walk each day.  Checking out the progress of each new home on a daily basis, gave a little purpose to the walk.  One day we noticed a site with a newly poured basement and decided to take a closer look. As I looked down into the concrete lined hole, my imagination conjured up a body hidden in a dark corner of the large basement area.
4. What expertise did you bring to your writing?
Since my first job at a Savings & Loan in England I have been interested in fraud, not out of a desire to commit fraud but from the perspective of preventing it.  It has always seemed clear to me that an honest person must figure out how perpetrate fraud in order to devise appropriate ‘checks and balances’ to defeat any possible attempt by a thief, to carry it out.
5. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
About eighteen months ago, I underwent five-way bypass surgery after a heart attack.  Post surgery, I was blessed to find myself recovering in an RV park in a quiet location where two retired nurses were also residing.  They stayed to help my partner guide me through recovery.
I will always be amazed that God gave me two fulltime nurses in a remote area overlooking the Gulf, and I was their only patient.
6. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
Murder at Serengeti Plains is the third novel in the series.  I have rough drafts of two other novels written several years ago.  My plan is to ‘dust off’ these manuscripts and work on rewriting them to provide Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl with new murders to solve.
7. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?
My character would be, and to some degree already is Hazel Davies.  I would like to be the person who not only loves God, but is passionate about finding ‘truth.’
8. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?
Three excerpts provided in separate document – Excerpts from Murder at Serengeti Plains .
9. Do you belong to a critique group? If so, how does this help or hinder your writing?
No, I don’t belong to a critique group. However, I do have a couple of trusted friends who read the draft of my novels and provide me with comments and suggestions.
10. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
When I discovered the self publishing process involving minimum expense (Kindle Direct Publishing), it seemed like an appropriate next step after taking the time to write.  My partner encouraged me to take this next step.
12. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I know that the standard advice is to outline the story.  However, I just start writing.  In truth, I rarely know where the story is going, or indeed, how it will end.  As my writing progresses, I sometimes change the story and have to back track to make it all work.
14. Who is your favorite character in the book? Can you tell us why?
Noah – He is an honest man who cares about his new homeowners always strives to meet their expectations.
BLURB:
Murder at Serengeti Plains is the third mystery novel in the series, featuring amateur sleuths Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl.  The earlier novels are Murder at Eagles Nestand Could They Be Twins?
The book is set in a new residential subdivision, Serengeti Plains, built by the renowned local builder, Zebra Homes.  It is located in the peaceful, historic town of Centerville, Ohio. However, peace is shattered when the new residents are awakened one morning by the sound of police sirens. The procession of police cars, come to rest in their own neighborhood.  A body has been discovered!  Was it an accident or was it murder?
Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl have recently moved into this new subdivision. They have previously helped the police to solve murders in both Florida and Ohio, but they did not expect to find one on their own doorstep.  When the police begin to look at their friend as the perpetrator, they find themselves drawn into yet another murder investigation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

The National News on television led off with a headline about house prices and the shortage of homes for sale throughout the country.  In Centerville, Ohio there was a growing, new sub-division, Serengeti Plains, being built by ZebraHomes.  The builder named the development after a district in Africa where zebras roam wild. His company was well respected and recognized for building beautiful single-family homes, laid out to form desirable neighborhoods and the Serengeti Community was fast becoming a gem amongst their many projects in the area.

The construction site was a hive of activity, with multiple homes in various stages of completion as demand for new homes pressured the builder to construct his properties as quickly as possible.  There were contractors of various disciplines swarming all over the building site, working feverishly to complete each unit while maintaining the builder’s required quality and standards.

All of this activity invariably led to disagreements and friction amongst the workers.  One man in particular, Larry Cox, who worked for the excavation company and held an inflated opinion of himself always seemed to be at the center of much of the unrest.  He liked to ‘throw his weight around,’ and talked down to the other workers on the site. He continually bragged about his thirty years’ experience and seemed to think this cemented his superiority over anyone and everyone on the building site, including buyers who frequently visited the site to watch the progress of their ‘soon to be’ new home.

EXCERPT:

Off to my right, a slight, average-sized guy came running along. He was wearing the pants and vest of a denim leisure suit, a garish, flowered polyester/Hawaiian shirt with the first five buttons opened up and sandals. Skidding to a stop in front of me, he looked about as confused as I felt at the moment.

“’Scuse me,” he said, “is this the place for the concert?”

I looked around at all the people flocking in our direction, listened to the squealing of the collection of cuties on the other side of the door.

“Yeah,” I said, “but good luck getting in. The place is packed.”

“Really? Cool!” He took off his mirrored sunglasses, and for the first time, I saw the eyes that, in years to come, would stare out from a billion or so album covers.

“Hey,” he said, “you a student here?”

“Yeah, but…”

“You think you can show me how to get in? Like there’s a service entrance or something, isn’t there? I’m with the band, and I’m running late.”

I clenched up. One of the oldest con lines in the world is “I’m with the band.” But something in the man’s look told me to take a chance.

“I think I can get you in, but I need something in return.”

“Yeah?” Now the “guy with the band” seemed uneasy. “What’s that?”

“Well, you see,” I said, “I’m with the student paper…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
I’ve spent the last few years making myself invisible. Many teenagers are blessed with unique talents—speak multiple languages or belch the alphabet backwards. Me? I’ve spent the last few years perfecting my own superpower: the ability to make myself disappear. Over the years, I’ve adapted to my surroundings and taught myself how to vanish, like an animal being hunted in the wild. I’ve fine-tuned techniques like staring at my shoes, hiding in the school toilet, and burying my head in a book. Right now, I’m practicing the art of staring at a notice on the wall while I wait for my appointment with Mrs. Spencer, the school counsellor. “Matchstick!” I’m knocked sideways, and Josh McBride’s leering smile is in my face, the same mocking expression mirrored by his friend, Lewis Pretty. Their laughter echoes down the corridor as they slope off. It would be fair to say that my invisibility training still needs work. “You okay?” Felicity Hooper has appeared to my right, studying the same notice from the drama department. There’s a play every year, and every year I dream of auditioning, but I don’t even have the confidence to hold a conversation with the girl standing next to me. The really pretty girl standing next to me, to be specific. “You’re in my history class?” “Yes. It’s Elliot. Elliot Hart.” Who do I think I am? James Bond? “Well, Elliot Hart, are you okay?” She grabs the pen attached to the board and scribbles her name on the audition sheet. Felicity Hooper is amazing, so it’s a damn shame I morph into a bumbling idiot around her.
The Write Balance
GENRE: Non-fiction, Writing Advice
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW:

What elements are necessary components for this genre?

Writing advice books are most valuable when they’re generous and supportive. A balance between ideas and practical action is essential. Since every writer’s style and temperament is different, it’s important to offer more than one way to accomplish the same thing. And finally, I appreciate writing books that challenge my way of seeing or doing aspects of my writing. Techniques and exercises are critical, but I also want my understanding to shift, to learn something new about myself as a writer.

What expertise did you bring to your writing?

Expertise is a tricky concept. It comes in many forms that aren’t acknowledged or appreciated. As an example, I have a master’s degree in creative writing from Johns Hopkins University. But that’s only a credential. It proves nothing about what I’m especially knowledgeable about or intuitively good at doing. I could point out my years of success as a writing teacher. I just did. So those are traditional or mainstream responses. But they don’t truly capture my expertise. Expertise comes from the word expert. Expert is from the Latin, experir, excpertusmeaning try.

What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

Full disclosure, I had to go back and read my bio. There is a lot about me that isn't in my bio. I’m neuro diverse, I’m an abuse survivor. I curse. My husband once threatened to put on my gravestone, “I have one more question…” I write about many topics, including death and belonging. I believe everyone has something important to say and to do to help repair the world.

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

To keep on writing. I only write about what compels me. I don’t always know exactly what pulls me towards a topic or a story. Writing is how I learn whatever insight or lesson I need from it first. Then I work to turn the manuscript into something that speaks to others.

Do you belong to a critique group? If so, how does this help or hinder your writing?

No. I belong to three critique groups. I would be lost without them. There’s this myth that writing is a solitary process. It’s nonsense. Writing is a collaborative endeavor. Even writers who don’t have critique groups and who never show their work to anyone but their publisher collaborate through reading, having conversations and being affected by their world.

When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

I honestly don’t remember the first time. It was poetry, and I sent it to a literary magazine. I’d already heard to expect 100 rejections or to paper a wall with them. So I didn’t have high expectations. And I didn’t need any special encouragement to submit my work. That’s just what writers did if they wanted readers.

What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

The worst advice was to measure success by money, accepted manuscripts, prizes, excellent reviews and the size of your audience. No one person gave that terrible advice to me. It permeated the writing communities I was part of. The best advice was from a poem by Marge Piercy. She was referring to writing, and the line is, you have to like it more than being loved.

Do you outline your books or just start writing?

It depends on the project. I write in multiple genres so it’s different for each one. What’s consistent overall is that I start by writing notes using pen and paper. When I use an outline, it’s rarely a traditional one. I don’t create an outline until I’ve already done a fair amount of writing. I need to see how ideas, characters, or scenes come out of me before I can see structure.

How do you maintain your creativity?

I nourish it through multiple activities like reading, dancing, spending time among trees and by the ocean, having meaningful conversations, attending talks and theatre. Really, most of what I do away from my day job and life chores (bills, house cleaning, etc.) fuels my creativity. And sometimes I get inspired by something I overhear or observe in the grocery store.

Anything else you might want to add?

Thank you for having me. I enjoyed answering your questions. I can’t wait to see what your readers ask.

BLURB:

In The Write Balance, the companion book to the beloved bestseller, Room to Write, Bonni Goldberg demonstrates how to find fulfillment as a writer by embracing three key aspects of writing: 1) Percolation: what takes place before a first draft is written; 2) Revision: the writer's role after the initial draft; and 3) Going Public: the writer's mission once the writing is done. Filled with tools, examples and exercises, Bonni’s guide offers motives, choices, and encouragement for writers to appreciate and to be creative in the phases before and beyond a first draft. Whether you’re new to writing or a pro, become more passionate and balanced in your writing life.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
I wrote my first writing book. Room to Write, to invite people to enter writing creatively, to trust their intuition and discover and use their tendencies, passions, and resistances as fodder for more writing. At that time people seemed to need to free up their innate creative juices and get the words flowing. Since then, at book appearances and during my workshops and writing courses, I’ve repeatedly had this experience: People thank me for helping them to trust themselves as writers and then ask me how to take the next step. What do you see as the next step? I ask.
Whether the answer had to do with getting an agent, writing longer works, feeling legitimate, or any of the many other facets of creative writing, the undertone was the same: a sense of longing or unrest about writing. It felt as if each person was saying to me, “Okay, I get the words out, I even trust them sometimes; now what?” This book is my answer…
The writers I know who are passionate and grounded, who truly love and respect their writing life, consciously attend to three aspects of writing that often get short shrift in the heat and excitement of raw creation: 1. Percolation—the process that takes place before a first draft takes shape 2. Revision—the writer’s role after the initial draft 3. Going Public—a writer’s mission once the writing is done.
The Senior Sleuths don’t mind a little peace now and then, but after a long bout of nothing out of the ordinary, they’re eager for some excitement.
No one could’ve imagined it would arrive with such a bang.
A mysterious explosion has rocked the assisted living community, disrupting life for everyone.
Despite the stern warnings from authorities, one of the Senior Sleuths can’t help but get involved. This is their home, after all.
Herman, always eager to root out the truth, ignores the warnings and hunts for answers. He’s convinced the explosion was a rouse to cover up something far more sinister. But the other seniors aren’t as eager to get involved. They’re focused on Marcy and Lance’s upcoming wedding.
Without his usual sidekicks, can Herman track down the bomber and a missing veteran who no one else remembers?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

A loud boom erupted behind Herman, resulting in him jumping to his feet, placing a hand on his racing heart, then turning toward the center as bits of wood, shingles, and drywall showered him and the lawn. Gus lay prone on the ground with his hands covering his head. Not thinking twice about the noise and its origin, Herman dashed as much as his stiff knees would allow to his friend’s side. “Are you okay?” He gasped the words as he lowered himself beside his friend.

Gus lifted his head, shaking off a shingle particle, and asked. “Are we being bombed?”

Using his flattened hand as a sun-shield, Herman peered up at the sky. “No planes in sight.”

No word of reproach for his friend who automatically assumed enemy fire. Complacency delivered many a soldier to an early grave. The words uttered years ago by his drill sergeant returned. Observe the area and check for the slightest thing awry. Herman stared at the single-story rambling building with the gabled roof.

Herman offered his hand to help up Gus, who took it. They both stood, hugged tightly, patting each other on the back. After a few seconds, they separated then delivered half-hearted shoulder punches to each other.

“I don’t know what got into me,” Herman muttered, running a hand over his face. “I saw you on the ground, then I thought…” He paused and shook his head. “Oh, never mind.”

Gus inhaled deeply, then said, “Me, too.”
