Hello all,

Sable Angel here. On Saturday, August 27, at the Scoreboard Tavern in Salem, Oregon from 12:45 pm to 3:00 pm, I held a book signing for my latest release, Shattered Tomorrows by C.L. Kraemer.

I sold out my entire inventory plus some of back catalogue! I've been published for a dozen years and have yet to sell everthing at a book signing. I'm chuffed!!

I have another signing at a pub called Magoo's on September 7 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. I'm hoping my order of books will come in so I can sell out again!

Why's and How's of Unexpected Journey

The reason I chose the 1700s to write Unexpected Journey was, to some extent, serendipity. Although I wanted to try my hand at a historical novel, and I loved colonial American history, I had no idea where to begin. I went to the library and got out all the history books I could find about colonial British and American times. I came across a fact about rich young women of the eighteenth century being kidnapped and forced to marry unscrupulous men.

Since I wanted to create an English character who traveled across the ocean and eventually returned to her homeland as a stronger, wiser person, this seemed an interesting beginning. I had no idea where it would lead, but I wrote a first draft which later became Manorborn. My intention was for this story to be the first book in a series.

Shaman, the second story I wrote, intended to be a stand-alone book too, arose out of my interest in the Lenni Lenape Indians of Pennsylvania, where I lived. I came across a library copy of the Walum Olum (a series of pictographs that record the myths of the Lenni Lenape) and wanted to understand more about these remarkable people.

My research involved a lot of reading and fact-collecting, visits to colonial exhibits, and exploration of any place that gave a feel for colonial times, including going on a square-rigger ship. It was very small. The people who sailed in them across the Atlantic must have been both brave and desperate.

The location for Gishuk's village in Shaman was based on a pond I often visited. Surrounded by woods, I used to go there to sit and think. Occasionally I took a swim, but that was kind of scary. The water was very cold and deep. One person drowned there.

Eventually, I wrote a third story, which became Streetwise, about Anna, who popped into Manorborn, and was a complete surprise to me. She too evolved over time, becoming one of my favorite characters.

The fourth book, Crossroads, about what becomes of Gishuk, Rachel, and Anna, took its final form after much rewriting and experimentation, including reordering the stories and putting Shaman ahead of Manorborn.

Finding a publisher was a long process, but I'm very happy with how the editor, Christine Young, helped shape the final manuscript, soon to be published by Rogue-Phoenix Press.

Weekly Update

This was a much better writing week than last week. I accepted the challenge to write a page a day. Only one day fell short of this goal. Plan to continue working on this goal for this week.

Still getting orders and phone calls for my last publication, Shattered Tomorrows. Just got the news that the editor who gave me my first break has had a heart attack and died last night. I think I'm in shock. I can feel my heart breaking at losing a wonderful mentor and friend.
I'll probably pull back a little to reflect but will come out with a vengeance. She'd be very disappointed if I didn't charge ahead.

Writing, I am plugging along!

As with Sable, I have been working on the promoting more than the writing. But I have pledged to write a page a day. Now don't laugh too hard. One page usually turns into two. I have found that it is fairly easy and fast to write a page of dialogue. One liners eat up the page. When I have that page finished, I go back and layer. The layering usually brings me to two pages. Yeah!

I've started an advertising campaign. I would love to sell more than a handful of books each month. Love to be in the hundreds. Ha! or as one would say online, LOL.

But I know this is possible. I'm checking out different types of advertising. I've put my first book of my Lakota/Pinkerton series for sale $.99. Now that is a bargain. I have sold a few at this price but I haven't seen any sales on the series. Which was what I was hoping to do. I know it will take some time and meanwhile, I'm going to keep searching for new way to promote.

This has been a true challenge week. I now have more work at my day job and a hubby who was home all week. But I will take up your challenge and write a page a day.

Writing? What writing?

Hello all,

I've been busily writing but not on the story I should be. I'm updating my biography for book signings. With the release of Shattered Tomorrows, I've found myself in a whirlwind of marketing and publicity. This is good--I think. The real me would just prefer to sit home and write, letting someone else do the hardwork of marketing. [Only in the movies and on TV does this happen.]

So I'll take my good fortune of having folks happy to let me sign my books in their businesses and squeeze in some writing on the side. I'll be manning a table at a local motorcycle run on Saturday, August 20 which should give me good grist for the next book in line. Maybe I can sneak in a few lines between riders...

Current Project: LEGACY action/family drama series

Status: Edits on Book #2 done!

I'm happy dancing tonight! I just finished the edits on the second book of my LEGACY series Rogue Phoenix Press will begin releasing in March 2012. Only seven more books to go--or maybe more. LOL!

As Cinnamon Angel said last week, summer has flown by in a blur of rain showers interrupted by occasional sunny days. I think we had a week's stretch of sun, then today was cloudy again. Felt like walking through a mist this morning, but not actually rain. Ah, well, I'm not much of a fan of really hot weather anyway.

However short this summer seems, it has also been productive--and I mean more than the cherry tomatoes growing on the two plants that comprise my garden this year. :) The first book of my action/family drama series is at RPP. The second is ready to go, and the next three are lined up for my editing process. Four more books are outlined in detail, and we'll see what happens after those nine. Along the way, I have drafts of all the covers that are being finaled as the books go to the publisher for their "magic."

I've been working on this series for a number of years, so it's very gratifying to reach the point of sending them off to enter the world of published books.

Tomorrow I'll start edits on the next book. For tonight, however, I'm basking in the joyful fulfillment of another book done and ready to send to the publisher. Ahhh…

What gives you a sense of fulfillment?

Summer Time

This summer is flying by at an amazing rate. I’m sure the fact we had rain through most of June added to the feeling of a shorter summer. The projects around the house are mounting up and the time is slipping away.

House cleaning has never been high on my ‘to do’ list. So there are times my house becomes a little overcrowded and cluttered. Yesterday we had our yearly yard sale, my attempt to reduce the clutter. The set date of the sale gives me great motivation to sort through belongs to determine what we really need or will I really used the cake pan which has been in its original box, unused, for four years. A cool, overcast morning made the day outside very comfortable. We couldn’t have asked for a better day.

Canning is our other summer tradition. This tradition has been handed down for generations from my mother’s grandmother (and I’m sure her mother) to my mom and now to my daughters. The last couple of years, the girls and I have increased what we make to include vegetables along with the fruit we can and freeze. Preserving our own food allows us to decide what ingredients we include or don’t include in the process. Nothing compares to the homemade freshness.

Although we enjoy each others company and listen to books on tape, canning is hard work. You do a lot of standing and work in an extremely hot kitchen. As we spend the day canning, I often think of the pioneer women with no grocery store down the street or modern conveniences yet they preserved all of their food. I admire their dedication. Their hard work which makes our canning seem insignificant.

The sunshine is beckoning as is the rewrites I need to do. Hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.
