The Gift is part of the Valentines Anthology. Three novellas written by Allana Angel, Sable Angel and Amber Angel.
Excerpt:
As if reading his mind, she cleared her throat and spoke.
"We've survived a lot more than you can dish out, Mr. Brooks."
"Micha," he reminded her.
She ignored him. "You'll be here and then you'll leave
again. When you leave this time, don't come back."
"Is that an order?" he smiled while he chewed. The
soup was delicious. But then Bertha had always been a great cook.
"You going to eat?"
She nodded. "When you're done and leave the room. I
won't share meals with Yankees."
He grinned and sat back in the chair, crossing his arms in
front of him. "Is that so? What if I decide to stay here until you
eat?"
"I've always had more willpower than you."
His smile was broad. He leaned forward on his forearms.
"I let you think you were more stubborn. And more times than I can count,
I let you have the last word."
She turned from him as if his gaze was so hot it burned. He
felt her hatred as well as her despair and fear. He needed to erase those
feelings, but he'd long ago discovered the task was daunting.
He pushed back from the table and stood.
"Private."
In less than a second, the soldier was in the kitchen.
"Sir."
"Prepare the master bedroom."
He heard the sharp hiss of disapproval as well as
resignation coming from Elice.
