What is love?

What is love?

This is a question which has been asked for millennia. The dictionary states; "A strong tender affection;". There is nothing said about man/woman; person/animal, nothing to indicate love is ONLY for a certain group. As we've all heard, there are sonnets written about it, libraries of books written around the idea and enough music to last for a trip to and from Mars. The concept has mystified humans for as long as they've had consciousness.

Love is a strong, TENDER affection. I emphasize this because someone close to me has been surviving a living hell perpetrated on them by another who believes love is total control of one human being by another. No where in my dictionary do I see that concept verbalized.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Until this happened to me and my family, I was aware but not educated in just how insidious this crime is. It is practiced by both male and females and has nothing to do with love.

If you know someone who is suffering, don't just shake your head and say they should just leave. It's not that easy. Be a friend. Listen, even if it is for the 800th time and tell them, once again, about the help they can receive in their own community. We need to start practicing love, REAL love.
