Maybe Tomorrow
by Erin Cawood

GENRE: Contemporary Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. What or who inspired you to start
writing?
I read
“the gift” by Danielle Steel and new at that point I wanted to be a published
author.
2. How did you come up with ideas for your books?
This
is so hard to explain. The idea tends to pop in my head and I usually drop
everything to note it down so that I can explore the idea further when I get
the opportunity to do so.
With
Maybe Tomorrow, I woke up with Keon in my head already dying for me to write a
letter to his daughter Lily. I knew at that moment Keon was in deep conflict
about having to choose between staying with Lily and going to be with Darcy,
his first love. I already knew that Keon’s major conflict was about discovering
that that only person he’s ever truly fallen in love with was dying, and
learning that he’d never healed from the broken heart she’d caused.
3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?
I
had to do a quite a bit of medical research to come up with a condition that
would be fatal, but Darcy could also survive from. Organ failure and a
successful transplant seemed the best option. But then I find a suitable reason
for the organ failure, I wanted the reader to experience the true hatred Keon holds
towards his first wife. But I also wanted the reader to understand her and the
decisions she made all those years ago, and grow to love her, at the same time
as Keon does. That meant Darcy’s condition had to be self-inflicted, of sorts,
but also not her fault, and for Darcy to view it as a punishment for her past
mistakes.
4. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
I
whole heartedly believe that you can might your dreams come true. I you try
hard enough and dream big enough you can do it. And to always bear in mind that
if it was easy, you wouldn’t appreciate it when you get there.
5. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I
have a new release coming out at the beginning of March. It’s the third novel
in the Behind Closed Doors series. I’m also working on something little lighter,
Cupid Moments, which I hope to be out later in the year. And then it’s on to
book 2 in the Forgive and Forget series. This one is about Keon’’s carefree
younger brother, Mack.
6. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?
I’ve
written a series of paranormal romances, Gabrielle can read minds, experience
your feelings, she can heal, and she can go anywhere she wants just by thanking
about it. Her job is to guide people who have gone off course in life and bring
their lives back on track. I thinks she’s the character I’ve tortured the least
also but as I haven’t finished her series just yet, that could change.
7. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I self-published my first two
books. I’ve never been interested I traditional publisher for that series. It wasn’t
until I discovered Booktrope did I revisit the idea of traditional punishing. I
like Booktrope’s team publishing philosophy.
8. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
The best
piece of advice I received was to write for your readers. In terms of bad
advice, I don’t think there is bad advice except, maybe vanity publishing.
You’ve just got to get in at the deep end and learn to swim. The great thing
about the writing community is that everyone is happy to share their
experiences, so you can get a ton of advice before you make decisions. Never be
afraid to ask.
9. Do you outline your books or just
start writing?
I
make a brief outline. But this tends to end up running into a full scene quite often.
When I started writing Maybe Tomorrow, it began as an outline when I was
experiencing a migraine. I suffer from Chronic Migraine and it was an attack
that put me in bed, but it wasn’t bad enough to spend most of that time dozing.
So I picked up a pen and notepad and pretty much wrote the entire draft manuscript
by hand… I was only supposed to be outlining!
10. Do you have an all time favorite
book?
I
do. It’s Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. But
right now, the one I’m singing the praises of is Unwanted Girl by M. K. Schiller. It’s about a recovering
drug addict, a best selling author, who’s drawn to the girl who delivers his
takeaway. She’s a young student who wants to write novel, so he helps her, and
somewhere along their journey, they fall in love. I loved these characters, but
it was the novel that they were writing that truly made me fall in love with
it. We have a novel within a novel, and you’re taken on a harrowing journey about
the issues of gendercide in the poor and remote villages of India. It was an
amazing read.
11. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
I really should tell you
about book two in the series, it’s about Keon’’s younger brother Cormack. But I
haven’t started it yet. I’m currently working on a serialized set of romantic comedies
titled Cupid Moments.
12. Can you tell us a little about the
black moment in your book?
Knowing he’s lost the battle to
save Darcy, Keon watches her walk away. He storms into the kitchen searching
for something to dull the gut wrenching pain of losing her again only to end up
sinking the team hard floor with his head in his hands when his mother walks in
to the kitchen. He confesses that Darcy has just weeks to live…Darcy is dying…
and he is still in love with her.
13. Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series.
A
series is fantastic! But it’s also twice as much work. Each part has to have a
goal. And that goal must sit with the overall goal of the series. You also have
to remember every minute detail that you’ve rewritten before. I work from a
spreadsheet for every series I’ve written.
BLURB:
On an unseasonably hot night in late September, Dr. Keon McGowan
is called away from a family gathering to a hospital emergency. Amongst his
patients that night is a blast from his past he’d rather forget. He’ll
certainly never forgive butterfly hunter Darcia Davenport for leaving him alone
as a single father while she chased butterflies through the Amazon rainforest.
Coming face to face with the woman who broke his heart after all
this time, Keon realises that he has never fully healed from it. But any chance
of finding closure is ripped away when Darcy chooses to end treatment and live
her final weeks without regret. Can Keon let her go? Or will he fight for the
tomorrow they might never have? Maybe Tomorrow is an emotional journey of love
caught between fate and destiny.
EXCERPT:
Vibrations
shot Dr. Keon McGowan’s hip as he placed a sterile gauze pad against the head
of the frightened teenager sitting in cubicle nine. “I think there’s more blood
than damage,” he reassured the youngster with a warm smile. Although the fifteen-year-old
would need stitches, he’d been lucky on all accounts. Keon looked up at the
boy’s parents and continued. “I’d still like a couple of scans. It's routine
with head injuries, and it's likely the on-call neurologist will want to keep
him overnight for observation just to be on the safe side.”
Keon
gave them a nod as he removed his latex gloves, tossed them in the medical
waste bin, and washed his hands. He didn’t want to cut their time short, but as
the head of London’s largest trauma centre, Keon was acutely aware there were
too many patients still awaiting first assessments, and there wasn’t a single
cubicle free in the accident and emergency treatment area. He fielded calls
between treating patients, unable to move more than ten feet without someone
calling his name. It was all in a day’s work, except today, things were more
hectic than usual, due to a massive traffic accident involving almost 200
people less than three hours ago.
“I’ll
arrange for a porter to come as soon as possible,” Keon promised the parents of
the fifteen-year-old at the end of the consultation. “But I’m sure you can
appreciate they’re stacked out at the moment, as is the imaging department. I’m
sorry it’s going to be a bit of a wait.”
They
nodded, and Keon swiftly left the cubicle as his mobile vibrated against his
hip again. Quickly, he glanced at the name on the screen. He wouldn’t normally
take a personal call in the middle of a crisis like this, but this caller
resided on the other side of the world. “I’m sorry, Sarah, but I can’t talk
now.”
“Oh,
hello, Sarah. How are you? I’m fine, Keon, thank you for asking.” Her sarcasm
was not missed, but he was just too busy to acknowledge it. “But I thought I’d
make this really important phone call to remind you the doctors at Mount Cook
are still waiting for your call.”
“I’m
sorry, but I’ve got seventy-three people who were in an RTA three hours ago. I
can’t talk about this now.” He didn’t mean to be short, but the board had too
many patients for his liking, and his staff grew weary. He didn’t need Sarah on
his back right now. He returned to the nurses’ station. “Heather? Can you
arrange for the patient in cubicle nine to have a CT scan and page neurology,
please?”
