It's Check In Day.

Let's Make Fireworks

Time to pay the piper! How did you do? How much did you write? Did words explode on your WIP?

This is the Rogue's Angels weekly check-in. Every Thursday we encourage the Angels and visitors to let us know how their writing is going.

How well are you doing?

Had problems this week? That's ok. Just sit down this coming week and write. Whatever you do, don't let difficulties from the week before get in your way this week.

Every word is one word closer to the finished product.

I've been working on Sweet Surrender. The weekend proved formidable so didn't get a great start. My goal is 500 words a day Not a lot but movement forward is always good.  This week I wrote 2,317 words. Still working on the book.

INTERVIEW:

What or who inspired you to start writing?
Reading is what inspired me. As I read, it would give me ideas about what else could happen beyond what the author had written. I wrote poetry, but I really wanted to weave a story together with real characters.

How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
A friend showed me an antique silver purse, and I was fascinated by the possibilities of where it had been, who it belonged to, and its meaning. My friend’s mother had died when she was three years old, and nobody would discuss it with her. I started thinking, “what if she is alive somewhere?”

What expertise did you bring to your writing?
In the book, there is a minor character who has Down’s Syndrome. I have spent over twenty years working with people with developmental disabilities and mental illness; I wanted to show all walks of life in this story.

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I have a second novel due in February 2017, and I have plans to keep writing more stories. I would love to be able to make a living at writing one day.

If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?
I think I would be Sonja, the police officer and love interest for the main character Lydia. She is a kick-ass kind of person, yet when pushed she has her sensitive moments. I would like to be that brazen.

When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I self-published The Purse originally through a ‘vanity publisher’ though I didn’t know it was such at the time. I didn’t like the way it came out, and I paid lots of money to have it done. I just believed in the story and thought it could be better with some help. I wrote it in 2000 and finished in 2004, so it’s been a long time coming.

Do you outline your books or just start writing?
Most often I write on a tablet of paper, plotting names, ages, family history and as much about that character as I can, which ends of being more of a flow chart because the ideas just keep going.

How do you maintain your creativity?
I have a musical playlist that I make. I pick songs that make me think of certain characters and/or situations; I try to put myself in their head. It really keeps me thinking about motivations, dialogue and often I come up with more ideas.

Who is your favorite character in the book? Can you tell us why?
I really enjoyed Joel (the head of the mob crime family who also wants the purse). There is something fun in writing a villain. He is suave and debonair but inside still trying to please his father like all of us wanting to please our parents.

Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?
I think they are both! Good Vs. Evil but Evil is also human and

BLURB:

When Lydia Blackwell visits her dying father for the last time, he reveals the deeply hidden truth about her mother. After the funeral, the stranger Derek Meade gifts her with a gorgeous antique purse. But before she has the chance to connect with the man who knew her father intimately, Lydia finds Derek murdered in his home.

Lieutenant Sonja MacIntosh is assigned to investigate Mr. Meade’s death, but her career on the force never prepared her for Lydia Blackwell. As Sonja works to solve the murder, Lydia takes the greatest risk of her life in leaving Chicago to search for clues to her mother’s past. Their instant attraction surprises them both, but even through the chaos Lydia can’t deny the intensity of her feelings for the strong willed Lieutenant.

Lydia’s possession of the antique purse throws her already chaotic life into a whirlwind of kidnapping, blackmail, vengeful mob bosses, and mind-numbing revelations. Through it all, Lydia must find the strength to accept herself – and those closest to her – despite their darkest secrets.

EXCERPT:

At thirty-eight, Lydia Blackwell was a striking woman, taller than most, but not quite six-foot, with long, flowing black hair and hazel eyes in which many men could lose themselves. Many men, however, would not. It took several years for Lydia to realize that men didn’t make her heart beat faster. It wasn’t until college that she discovered her real self, thanks to a beautiful, blonde study-partner. Something in her had captured Lydia’s heart and she was never the same again. To many of her friends, it had just been “experimenting”. But this was Lydia’s life, her soul, and her very being. Still, it wasn’t everything.

For years, Lydia kept her innermost thoughts and her secret life to herself. Her father would never have understood her way of thinking—of being. It was possible he could have made the assumption. After all, there were no men around and no children. There were so many things she couldn’t discuss with her father, nothing resembling emotions, or even people about whom she’d felt emotional. No, nothing like that. Certainly not even Danielle. Oh Danielle. Lydia’s mind drifted away as she traveled the open road closer to her father’s house.

Danielle Baldwin certainly had issues, but issues were Lydia’s specialty. Lydia was a psychotherapist and ran her own practice in a posh suburb of Chicago. Five years had passed since she first saw Danielle smile, and now Lydia held therapy groups out of her home. So much had changed, yet somehow the feelings remained the same.

EXCERPT:

As she approached the buggy, the men’s raised voices became disturbingly clearer.

“What was I supposed to think when I got a phone message from a total stranger, accusing me of—of impregnating his wife?” the taller fellow demanded tersely. He was standing in front of a saddled black horse, gripping its reins.

“And how do you think I felt when your name was the last thing Moly uttered before she died?” the other man shot back. “Tell Asa I’ll always love him. Do you know how those words tore my world to shreds?”

Edith’s eyes widened. Clearly this conversation was none of her business, yet the crying baby compelled her to walk faster. Perhaps she could suggest that these two men speak with Bishop Tom about their troubling situation—although he was probably already at the Hooley home, preparing for the church service that would precede the wedding.

“I’m telling you I’ve never so much as met your wife, let alone—”

“Shut up! This explains why Molly got so big so fast, and why the twins came two months early!” the man with his back to Edith lashed out. “Not only have I lost my wife to cancer, but I’ve learned that my marriage of thirteen months was a lie!”

Twins? And their mother’s name was Molly—and she died of cancer? Edith’s thoughts whirled as she stepped up through the buggy’s open door. Two little babies wiggled in towel-lined half-bushel gardening baskets on the back seat as their wails filled the vehicle.

“Oh, look at you,” Edith murmured. “Shhh . . . it’ll be all right now.”  She gently scooped the nearest baby, which wore a crocheted yellow cap, into the crook of one arm before lifting its white-capped twin to her other shoulder. It seemed these wee ones had no mother and a very distraught father, and they’d been born into a confusing, distressing situation.

As the men’s discussion escalated, Edith stepped carefully down from the buggy. One fellow’s voice sounded familiar. She didn’t want to believe the scenario he’d been describing, but right now her main concern was for the babies.

“Would you please lower your voices?” she insisted as she came around the rig. “You’ve upset these little angels so badly that—Will Gingerich? Are these your twins?”

“Edith! Thank God I’ve found you.” The handsome young man to whom her sister Loretta had once been engaged removed his hat to rake his sandy brown hair with his fingers. “Jah, I believed they were mine until Molly named this—this other dog as their father—”

“I’m trying to get to the bottom of that story,” the taller man protested, “but—”

“Stop it, both of you!” Edith insisted in a low voice. “These babies are wet and hungry and upset. Your problems will have to wait until we’ve taken care of more important matters.”

Rogue's Angles Present: Revelations by Deborah A. Bailey

Please welcome Deborah A. Bailey author of Revelations.

Deborah A. Bailey will be awarding a $30 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Hathor Legacy: Revelations
by Deborah A. Bailey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Science Fiction Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I've been writing for as long as I can remember. My father was a musician and for a time he was a music teacher, so no doubt a lot of my creativity was inspired by him. The first book I can remember falling in love with was, The Cat in the Hat. I loved the rhymes and the fun illustrations. I'm sure that book was also an inspiration for me as well.

2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

The original idea for the series came to me after I saw a documentary about President Franklin D Roosevelt. It discussed how contracting polio as an adult impacted his life. I wondered what would happen if a disease could change a person's DNA. How would they be different and how would it change the world around them. The premise in Hathor Legacy is that terraforming of the planet, Hathor unleashes a virus that changes the DNA of the settlers. The descendants of the people who survived the sickness end up acquiring PSI powers. In this novel, I go into more detail about the history of the PSI people and their desire to regain control of their planet. Also, I answer the question about what happened to Nadira's (the heroine) mother. Let's just say, there are some surprises, especially for those who have read books one and two.

3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

Well, besides being a long-time science fiction reader, I also spent many years in corporate. It's a culture unlike any other with it's rules and hierarchies. So much of it is governed by people never really saying what they mean, at least not directly. There's a lot of passive-aggressiveness, and in-fighting as people jockey for position. Based on what I experienced during my time there, it was perfect material for this series. In the Hathor Legacy universe, Novacorp runs the planet as a corporate government of sorts.

4. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I love old handbags and have a few interesting ones in my collection. It includes a few Lucite purses from the 1950's, and a phone cord handbag from the 1940's. I'm also into mid-century modern furniture, but for the most part can't afford to collect those pieces! But I have a Pinterest board with home furnishings I really like. I've had to cut down on collecting things, though. That's one reason I stay away from flea markets these days!

5. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I have an idea for a 4th Hathor Legacy book, but that won't be coming until next year. In the meantime, I have another book coming for my Family Pride lion shapeshifter paranormal romance series. After that, I'd like to try a couple of other romance genres. I have lots of ideas, it's just finding the time to get it all done!

6. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

My first submission was for a short story. At the time I was transitioning from writing Star Trek fan fiction into writing about my own characters. I submitted a story to  the Star Trek Strange New Worlds contest. I didn't get accepted, but I did get a very brief note and was encouraged to submit again the next time around. That experience motivated me to keep going, and ultimately I sold one of my own stories to another publication. You could say my encouragement came from the other writers I was reading and corresponding with at the time. Their creativity in taking established characters and putting new spins on the canon showed me what could be done. That's one big reason I think fanfic is a great place to start. I worked with writers and editors who were also in the fandom, and I learned a lot from them.

7. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

Seeing how I'm a "pantser" I rarely outline my books. I start with an idea, which can be as simple as a conversation that comes to me. Then I start writing it down. From there I take a look at the main characters and get a feel for where they are and where they're going. For Hathor Legacy: Burn and Revelations, I used the feminine version of the Hero's Journey to map out Nadira's progress. When I was working on Revelations, my outline didn't come until I was on the 2nd draft. At that point I knew where I wanted to go, and what had to happen. It's much easier for me to create an outline after I have the story developed.

8. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?

My favorite character is Maji, who is an intuitive. She says exactly what's on her mind, but she's never intentionally hurtful or a mean girl. She can see what others can't, and so she doesn’t hold back when it's time to tell the truth. I also like her sense of style. One of my editors told me Maji reminds her of a cosplayer with her different outfits. I hadn't had that in mind specifically when I created the character, though. She's a very creative person who has her own sense of self.

9. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?
They can be both! As I was finishing this novel, I kept getting ideas for the next Hathor Legacy book. I kept writing them down, which only encouraged more to come. The tough part is finishing the current WIP before starting the next one. I suppose I should be happy to have so many ideas, but they always seem to come when I'm trying to work on something else.

10. Anything else you might want to add?

Thanks so much for hosting me. I really enjoyed it!

BLURB:

Hathor Legacy: Revelations – Book Three of the Hathor Legacy Series

An enemy returns to spark new tensions between the Guardians and Novacorp. In the midst of the crisis, Nadira is given information about her parents that threatens to destroy her relationship to the Guardians and to Jonathan.

While Nadira searches for answers, Jonathan is enticed into the hedonistic world of the Novacorp executive class. His entertainment club attracts the elite of Hathor, but his notoriety comes with a price.

The worlds of the Guardians and Novacorp are put on a collision course where only one side may come out on top. Nadira is called on to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the legacy of the First Families, the original settlers of Hathor, while Guardians, Kasema and Deshtu groups are faced with the choice to unite or be brought completely under Novacorp control.

Old scores are settled and long-hidden truths are revealed, and at the end Nadira and Jonathan’s relationship and their world will never be the same.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
"I just got word from security." The words tumbled out so quickly that Azure had to stop to take a breath. "It's Mikal. He's escaped the penal colony on a ship. Novacorp security lost track of it. They don’t know where he is right now."
"He what?" It took her a moment to get her thoughts in order to reply. "But how could he? They did the Burn Order. It was supposed to destroy his mental functions, right?"
"Not all, obviously. The injection was only meant to destroy his PSI abilities. But he was still able to break out of the colony, steal a ship and get past all the security checks."
How had Mikal been able to escape a penal colony? He was supposedly neutralized by the chemical injection he was given after he'd been taken off Hathor. How had he even had the awareness to escape? Yet again, they'd underestimated him.
"He might have had help from someone at the colony," Nadira suggested. "Otherwise, how could he escape? Isn't it maximum security?"
"My child, I have no idea. We're still waiting for an update from the colony," Azure replied, "But we must be on our guard. I'll stay in Nova City until we receive word of his capture."
