INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I've been writing for as long as I can remember. My father was a musician and for a time he was a music teacher, so no doubt a lot of my creativity was inspired by him. The first book I can remember falling in love with was, The Cat in the Hat. I loved the rhymes and the fun illustrations. I'm sure that book was also an inspiration for me as well.

2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

The original idea for the series came to me after I saw a documentary about President Franklin D Roosevelt. It discussed how contracting polio as an adult impacted his life. I wondered what would happen if a disease could change a person's DNA. How would they be different and how would it change the world around them. The premise in Hathor Legacy is that terraforming of the planet, Hathor unleashes a virus that changes the DNA of the settlers. The descendants of the people who survived the sickness end up acquiring PSI powers. In this novel, I go into more detail about the history of the PSI people and their desire to regain control of their planet. Also, I answer the question about what happened to Nadira's (the heroine) mother. Let's just say, there are some surprises, especially for those who have read books one and two.

3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

Well, besides being a long-time science fiction reader, I also spent many years in corporate. It's a culture unlike any other with it's rules and hierarchies. So much of it is governed by people never really saying what they mean, at least not directly. There's a lot of passive-aggressiveness, and in-fighting as people jockey for position. Based on what I experienced during my time there, it was perfect material for this series. In the Hathor Legacy universe, Novacorp runs the planet as a corporate government of sorts.

4. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I love old handbags and have a few interesting ones in my collection. It includes a few Lucite purses from the 1950's, and a phone cord handbag from the 1940's. I'm also into mid-century modern furniture, but for the most part can't afford to collect those pieces! But I have a Pinterest board with home furnishings I really like. I've had to cut down on collecting things, though. That's one reason I stay away from flea markets these days!

5. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I have an idea for a 4th Hathor Legacy book, but that won't be coming until next year. In the meantime, I have another book coming for my Family Pride lion shapeshifter paranormal romance series. After that, I'd like to try a couple of other romance genres. I have lots of ideas, it's just finding the time to get it all done!

6. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

My first submission was for a short story. At the time I was transitioning from writing Star Trek fan fiction into writing about my own characters. I submitted a story to  the Star Trek Strange New Worlds contest. I didn't get accepted, but I did get a very brief note and was encouraged to submit again the next time around. That experience motivated me to keep going, and ultimately I sold one of my own stories to another publication. You could say my encouragement came from the other writers I was reading and corresponding with at the time. Their creativity in taking established characters and putting new spins on the canon showed me what could be done. That's one big reason I think fanfic is a great place to start. I worked with writers and editors who were also in the fandom, and I learned a lot from them.

7. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

Seeing how I'm a "pantser" I rarely outline my books. I start with an idea, which can be as simple as a conversation that comes to me. Then I start writing it down. From there I take a look at the main characters and get a feel for where they are and where they're going. For Hathor Legacy: Burn and Revelations, I used the feminine version of the Hero's Journey to map out Nadira's progress. When I was working on Revelations, my outline didn't come until I was on the 2nd draft. At that point I knew where I wanted to go, and what had to happen. It's much easier for me to create an outline after I have the story developed.

8. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?

My favorite character is Maji, who is an intuitive. She says exactly what's on her mind, but she's never intentionally hurtful or a mean girl. She can see what others can't, and so she doesn’t hold back when it's time to tell the truth. I also like her sense of style. One of my editors told me Maji reminds her of a cosplayer with her different outfits. I hadn't had that in mind specifically when I created the character, though. She's a very creative person who has her own sense of self.

9. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?
They can be both! As I was finishing this novel, I kept getting ideas for the next Hathor Legacy book. I kept writing them down, which only encouraged more to come. The tough part is finishing the current WIP before starting the next one. I suppose I should be happy to have so many ideas, but they always seem to come when I'm trying to work on something else.

10. Anything else you might want to add?

Thanks so much for hosting me. I really enjoyed it!

BLURB:

Hathor Legacy: Revelations – Book Three of the Hathor Legacy Series

An enemy returns to spark new tensions between the Guardians and Novacorp. In the midst of the crisis, Nadira is given information about her parents that threatens to destroy her relationship to the Guardians and to Jonathan.

While Nadira searches for answers, Jonathan is enticed into the hedonistic world of the Novacorp executive class. His entertainment club attracts the elite of Hathor, but his notoriety comes with a price.

The worlds of the Guardians and Novacorp are put on a collision course where only one side may come out on top. Nadira is called on to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the legacy of the First Families, the original settlers of Hathor, while Guardians, Kasema and Deshtu groups are faced with the choice to unite or be brought completely under Novacorp control.

Old scores are settled and long-hidden truths are revealed, and at the end Nadira and Jonathan’s relationship and their world will never be the same.

EXCERPT:

"I just got word from security." The words tumbled out so quickly that Azure had to stop to take a breath. "It's Mikal. He's escaped the penal colony on a ship. Novacorp security lost track of it. They don’t know where he is right now."

"He what?" It took her a moment to get her thoughts in order to reply. "But how could he? They did the Burn Order. It was supposed to destroy his mental functions, right?"

"Not all, obviously. The injection was only meant to destroy his PSI abilities. But he was still able to break out of the colony, steal a ship and get past all the security checks."

How had Mikal been able to escape a penal colony? He was supposedly neutralized by the chemical injection he was given after he'd been taken off Hathor. How had he even had the awareness to escape? Yet again, they'd underestimated him.

"He might have had help from someone at the colony," Nadira suggested. "Otherwise, how could he escape? Isn't it maximum security?"

"My child, I have no idea. We're still waiting for an update from the colony," Azure replied, "But we must be on our guard. I'll stay in Nova City until we receive word of his capture."

  1. Fantastic interview! Do you have a muse that inspires you to write, do you draw from the characters you create in your head? :)

    1. Thank you! Characters come to me, usually they're in conversation and allow me to listen in! :)

I used to read comics all the time when I was younger, and I've always been a reader of all types of genres. So, I guess by now there's a lot influences that I'm drawing from.

  2. What is your ideal way to spend your summer and do you base your stories on real life holidays?

    1. My ideal summer would include a lot of time outdoors enjoying the sun. I used to like the beach a lot, but these days I prefer to be around nature. I'm one of those people who gets the winter blues, so I love being around color and sunlight. I don't specifically base stories on real-life holidays, though I'm sure everything around me is an influence on what I create. Thanks, Mai!

  3. Who are some of your favorite authors; what strikes you about their work?

    1. I'd say a major influence on me is the late author Octavia Butler. I love her style of telling a story so simply, yet the themes are very powerful. For instance her Xenogenesis trilogy is really incredible for asking what does it mean to be human?

When a person changes from within, as the PSI people do in my story, are they still human? They feel they are, yet they're at a different stage of human development. Big questions that I think science fiction authors in particular can answer in their stories.

      Great question, Peggy!

    2. Hi Becky! Usually it's the characters that come first. I get an idea or hear a conversation in my head. In time I start putting the story together. Sometimes the story changes once I get to know the characters, though!
