Gripe time. One of my many incarnations is editor. I've learned to temper my need to perfect every story, but there are a few items guaranteed to set my teeth on edge. So begins the gripe.
Every writer, yours truly included, has at least one bad habit they can't seem to break. I've noticed lately, the authors with which I am working have fallen into a deep hole of lazy. Yup, I'm callin' it like I see it. Granted when people speak, they are lazy. They use slang, rely on 'uh', and repeat what they just said. But writers aren't people per se; they are authors.
As authors, we are charged with knowing the difference between to, too, and two, and when to use each of them. Conversations between characters need to feel authentic but not ignorant. Please edit, edit, and edit again until you dream every line of your story.
Do you really need to:
Start each conversation with - 'So,' or 'Well,'?
Start every sentence with - 'Now,' or 'Then'?
Rely on 'that' to move a thought forward?
The list can be endless, but I believe these few notations should keep you busy for now.
