GENRE: Fiction  (Tragic Comedy/Coming of Age)

BLURB:

Meet the Corelli clan. Told by the oldest grandson, Frank, this family tapestry, with pathos and hilarity, begins weaving itself in the 1930s and rollicks through four riotous decades. The strongest thread is its oldest member, Antonio. To the ragtag Corelli clan, he is an ocean—an unwavering force upon which they rely. Lizzy, the youngest Corelli, is the brightest thread. Emanating from her is the light by which they see the world. Spanning these dynamic figures is an oddball cast of characters that keep one another in stitches right up until the life-affirming surprise birthday party of their beloved patriarch.

EXCERPTS:

It was hot weekend and Dad, playing the part of the dutiful husband, thought he would do Mom a good turn by watering the tomato plants, newly sprouted zinnias, and wilted perennials, thus allowing Mom a morning of leisure. “I’m up, so I may as well,” he said, but we were too engrossed in television to care about what might happen to flowers when denied water. As luck would have it, when Dad turned the knob attached to the spigot, he discovered that the spigot had developed a hairline crack—no doubt a result of the harsh winter or the cumulative effect of many Northeast winters. Instead of entering the hose, the water came spouting through the aforementioned crack. Clearly, this was an instance when ordinarily a man would grumble and wheeze; perhaps let loose a few expletives. Not Dad. A cracked spigot brought forth a rush of adrenalin, as it gave him an opportunity to tinker. Off he marched, straightaway to the basement, to locate his trusty pipe wrench. When he returned, he adjusted the wrench to grip the spigot and began turning it. Some difficulty was expected. After all, it was an outdoor fixture, the threads of which potentially were rusted onto the flange. But Dad had no trouble turning his wrench. In fact, to his surprise, it turned with minimal effort—perhaps too little effort. You know what they say when things seem too good to be true?

“This’ll be a simple job,” said Dad. “One, two, three, lickety-split. All I have to do is pop on a new spigot, and we’ll be good to go.” That was Dad; everything was either lickety-split or in a jiffy. Whenever Mom heard lickety-split or in a jiffy, she’d go reaching for her frying pan and gravy pot and line up all her special ingredients. The reason? Mom’s gravy making and Dad’s plumbing repairs had in common one glowing feature; they were all-day affairs. The similarities ended there, though, as no two simultaneous efforts, whether worldwide or in the same room, ever produced such opposite results—and not occasionally but every blessed time. It was during these times that Mom was pinned to the stove and Dad was playing Mr. Fix-it that Ricky and I would take off for the day, usually for the basketball courts. Neither of us cared to witness Dad’s angst when things got screwed up, or Mom’s wrath when the inevitable occurred.
