EXCERPTS:

 

JAALI pulled a letter from the Post Office box and checked the postmark. At last the word he’d been waiting for. Anticipation rolled through him like a wave about to crest. As much as he wanted to tear it open, this wasn’t the place. He tucked the envelope into his shirt pocket and hurried out the door. 

 

Lightning streaked across the blackening sky. Fat raindrops pelted his head. He quickly jumped into his utility van and drove the short distance to James Lee Park. When he reached the parking lot, beachgoers were tossing chairs, coolers and other beach gear into their trunks. In moments the once crowded area was virtually void of people. 

 

Jaali climbed out of the van and sprinted under a pavilion overlooking the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The sky opened up and rain thundered down in a torrent. Wind churned the surf. Waves crashed onto the deserted sugar-white beach. 

 

Jaali sat at a picnic table, took a handkerchief from his pocket, and wiped moisture from his forehead and beard. After he dried his hands, he ripped off the end of the envelope, blew it open, and slid out the letter. The wind whipped the one page note. He steadied the sheet the best he could while the rain and wind swirled about him. The handwritten words and phrases jumped out like a 3-D movie trailer: “Not trained”, “services not needed”, “planning belongs to professionals”.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

 

A proud wife of a retired Air Force officer, mother of one son and grandparent of three grandchildren, Ellen, didn’t start writing until retirement years, and even then she considered writing a hobby.  In 2019 she published a historical fiction, SONS OF CUBA, a two book series.  INTO THE DEVILS DEN is her third publication.  During the early months while COVID-19 was wreaking havoc through the nation and around the world, she took the opportunity to write another suspense thriller entitled SHATTERED LOYALTIES which she hopes will be published and released sometime in 2021.
