Highland Honor

The first book in the Highland Series

Willfully stubborn, innocently courageous, Callie Whitcomb braves a journey through the treacherous highlands to the Macpherson castle. Callie flees from an unwanted marriage as well as her ruthless half brother. Naively she believes Colin MacPherson, the head of the clan, is loyal to her father and will give her sanctuary, protecting her from the vile plans that have been made for her.

As hard and as unyielding as the winter storms that sweep through the countryside, Colin is irresistibly drawn to the impetuous beauty who has magically appeared on his doorsteps. Despite his vows of revenge against her father, she stirs his passion as well as his sense of justice...but to love her would violate all his vows of revenge.

Scotland November 1512:

A heavy frost sat on the frozen earth, and a full moon shone clearly between the heavy clouds dotting the sky. Lady Callie Whitcomb looked over her shoulder as she raced through the deepening gloom toward the lighted tavern ahead. Every shadow, every mournful sigh of the wind sweeping through the trees, every chilling animal sound filled her with terror. Fear for her life drove her to put all thoughts of danger aside. He would follow her, find her, and drag her home.

Home.

"Don't think of that now," she reminded herself fiercely, even while tears stung in the back of her throat and fear made her limbs tremble. "Don't ye dare think of home. It no longer exists." Nothing and no one could coax her back or make her believe there was naught but terror in the home where she'd been born.

"I will never marry Lord Huntington. Never!" she whispered fiercely, the chill night air solemnly echoing her words.

Her stepbrother, Archibald Covington III, made sure she could never return.

"There ye be, lass! I've been waiting for you."

The voice rose from nowhere and surprised her. Her heart froze, lurched, then began an erratic beat, while raw nerves snapped, sending a myriad of sensations racing down her spine.

"Archibald--" she whispered, panic sweeping through her. "He's found me." All she could hear was the pounding of blood in her ears.

Before she could reach her destination, before she could find safe refuge from him, his men had found her. No! Not now. Not when she thought she had eluded them all.

A wave of fear sweeping through her reminded her, that if caught, she would be taken back to Archibald and forced to marry Lord Huntington.

"I'll help you down, lass."

"No."

Before she could react and spur her horse forward, callous, rough hands centered on her waist then pulled her from her mount.

"No!" She cried out to no avail. Regaining her wits, she beat fiercely upon the man's broad chest, tearing at his face and his thick beard with her fingers.

"Ach, lass! Hold still! I mean ye no harm. Stop this--" His voice was gruff and impatient.

Fear for her life had spurred her haste. Terror she might see Huntington or Archibald with each turn of the road haunted every hour of her journey. Archibald had retainers everywhere. Messages would have been sent. A highlander could be bought.

"Ruffian! Unhand me! Ye barbarous Scotsman."

If Archibald had guessed what path she followed...

"Verra well, ne'er let it be said that I dinna do a lass' bidding." Just as suddenly as he'd grabbed her, his hold upon her vanished. She stumbled backward.

Instantly, she found herself sitting on the frozen earth. The man towering above her watched her with concerned dark eyes. Despite the scar stretching from forehead to chin, his mouth quirked upward in a humorous slant.

"Ye be a handful, lass."

Mary of A Romance Review says, "Overall I liked the story and can recommend it as a worthwhile read. The author has a lot of talent and the plot and tension of the story are well handled."

All I wanted from my dad was a few kind words, attention and love. He never gave me that. I also yearned for his approval. What I wanted the most was for him to be proud of me. Many children — later adults — feel similarly. We want validation from our parents and later from our spouses, managers and friends. Young adults often choose a profession that their parents suggest or inherit a family business. Ten, fifteen or twenty years later they realize they are not happy in their career and wonder why they made that choice. It’s because they wanted their parents’ approval.

Mom & Dad’s Martinis by Jacelyn Cane

Please welcome Jacelyn Cane author of Mom & Dad’s Martinis

Jacelyn Cane will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Mom & Dad’s Martinis

by Jacelyn Cane

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Memoir
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Jacelyn Cane's mom and dad liked their martinis dry: straight gin on the rocks with a dab of vermouth and a hint of water - and they liked them often. They also liked to party; they danced, socialized, and drank - they were good at all three. Sometimes this behaviour led to humorous situations - antics in the pool, at the club, the cottage or in the car, for example. Other times, however, the experiences were not so funny - family fights and times of neglect, trauma, and abuse. By weaving together a series of episodes that take the reader to light and dark places, author Jacelyn Cane tells a poignant cautionary tale for anyone affected by alcoholism and/or family struggles. The author is using a pseudonym and most of the names in the book have been changed to protect people's identities. "Mom and Dad's Martinis: A Memoir" is a great read for anyone who has experienced a childhood mixed with joy as well as sorrow. It is a story of love, acceptance, forgiveness, and hope.

EXCERPTS:

May, 1973

Mom and Dad sipped their martinis from their usual rocks glasses. They liked their martinis dry: straight gin on the rocks with a dab of vermouth and a hint of water. It was a frequent ritual to wet their whistles while getting ready for one of their many social engagements.

This night was a particularly important occasion. It was the night of the inauguration ball.

“Charlie, your white dinner jacket and black pants are back from the cleaners. They’re lying on the bed.” Mom’s Grace Kelly blonde hair shone, and she smiled her dazzling smile, as she applied her light-pink lipstick. I was nineteen and, even though it was Saturday, I was home for the evening. Both of my siblings had gone out. Dad was shaving in the bathroom.

I watched from my parents’ bedroom door as Mom touched up her rouge and stroked on her lilac eyeshadow. She leaned towards the mirror, widening her eyes, as she brushed her mascara on ever so carefully. Admiring herself, she tossed her curls back and put on her pearl earrings and necklace. Then she slipped into her full-length mauve organza gown with its satin sash and frill around the neck. She put on her beaded heels and grabbed the matching clutch purse.

“Dot, can you help me with this?” Dad needed Mom’s help to get the bow just right under his double chin. Leaving the button undone on his white jacket, he looked in the mirror, combed his thinning black hair, put on his glasses, and tucked his acceptance speech into his breast pocket.

“What do you get up to at the Gyro Club anyway?” I asked as I followed them down the hall towards the front door.

“It’s a very special club for businessmen. It’s not easy to get into … and it’s been around for decades,” said Dad.

“It’s a vital place for Dad to meet new clients. How do you think he got to be top salesman at Canada Life” Mom said, adding, “I made you some stew, Jackie. It’s on the stove.”

Dad grabbed his car keys. “The club’s mission statement is easy to remember - three words: power, poise, and purpose.”

“It’s a big deal for Dad to be chosen as president,” said Mom, as I draped her mink stole around her shoulders.

“Well, you both look spectacular. Have a wonderful time. Good luck.” I watched them drive off and closed the door behind me.

With each passing day, her handsome host turns Ria’s convalescence into an increasingly sensual escape. Now her greatest challenge may be imagining anything less than a future in his arms.

EXCERPT: Graham’s Wicked Kiss

He rose, dusting the snow from his greatcoat before motioning for her to come. He was mouthing some words she couldn’t understand. She wasn’t too sure about finding herself in the falling snow and the cold. The children were inside the stable, warmer at least having given up on the rough and tumble games they played with Gray.

            She grabbed her cape, pulling the hood over her head before starting out the back door to see what he wanted. Snow crunched under feet. White flakes settled on her coat as well as her hair. Sometime when she wasn’t looking, he disappeared. She peeked around the corner of the stable.

            A snowball hit her in the chest. She gasped surprised. When she looked up, he was grinning, another missile formed in his hands. “Graham Chamberlin!” She didn’t know how to feel. Bending down she picked up a batch of snow, pushing it together into a ball. She heaved at him. He ducked before tossing the one he held at her then another. She darted but couldn’t get away from the hail of snow.

            “Stop!” she cried out, tossing more at him until he was beside her, his arms wrapped snuggly around her. “Why did you...?” His lips met hers cutting off her words. He kissed her, tumbled to the ground with her laughing and rolling in the snow.

            She’d never seen him this carefree before. He acted as a little boy. When they stopped rolling, she lay on top of him. Her body tensed as she told herself over and over this was Gray, only Gray, not William or the countless other men he allowed into her room. She inhaled a shaky breath. His hands held her face as she felt the gentleness, the slow intoxication as he stared at her, his eyes darkening as he watched her.

            “Kiss me,” he whispered, still grinning up at her.

She could leave at any time. His hold upon her was easy. “Gray,” she said his name as she kissed him. He tasted as he always did, minus the sweet wine. She ran her tongue across his bottom lip.

            He stopped, his brilliant green eyes shining. “Tongues are alright now?”

            She laughed nodding, “I believe so. Should we try and see?”

            “You first,” he said, his voice soft as she leaned toward him.

            Tentatively, she touched his bottom lip with her tongue then slipped it inside his slightly parted lips. He groaned as she ran it beneath his upper lip then along his teeth. He met hers with his. She felt his smile as they continued, tasting and exploring each other. He rolled her over, his hard body above her as he controlled the kisses now. Hungrily, she responded to him.

            She was cupping his cheeks, staring into his eyes; piercing eyes, hot green, mesmerizing green. It happened then, lips to lips, his to hers, covering opening, flaming hot. She was sucked into the vortex, sinking, whirlpools of sensations taking her deeper and deeper.

            “Storms picking up. Probably should take this inside unless the two of you want to freeze to death.” Charles spoke with a touch of humor in his voice as he stood behind them.

            “Don’t ken why the two of you are rolling around in the snow,” Dodge said with a touch of disgust in his voice.

            Graham laughed, easily bringing Ria to her feet as he stood brushing off the bits of snow covering her. “Someday you won’t ask that question. Should we go inside and get warmed up. Perhaps Millie has dinner almost finished.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
The door had swung violently away from April and slammed shut.
“How did that happen?”
Nobody closed the door, nor did she feel a gust of wind. It would take a strong wind to close the heavy door. So how had it shut on its own?
April cautiously turned the metal door latch and peeked into the hall. She looked left. She looked right. Nobody was present. She glanced across the way and might’ve suspected the maid Elena, but the maid was busy rehanging Zelda’s clothes. So without a logical explanation for what happened April had no choice except to shrug it off and close the door.
April stripped to her slip and turned the handle to the sink’s hot water facet. The plumbing made a low rumbling noise for a couple of seconds before rust-colored water spilled out. April wasn’t alarmed. The same discoloration happened at her family home. And like home, she waited a few seconds for warm and clear water to appear.
She grabbed a bar of Pear’s soap already at the sink and started to wash her hands when a familiar aroma struck her nose.
Lavender?
April knew the fragrance well. It was her mother’s favorite. Mama rubbed the oil on her face and hands in the belief that it calmed the skin and reduced wrinkles.
Something flashed in the mirror.
Like the sensation of being watched, April felt someone, or some-thing stood near, very near. It was close enough to give her goosebumps on her arms and raise the hair on the back of her neck.
Squeak.
There was a clawfoot tub in the back half of the bathroom. The hot and cold-water valves were turning on their own.
Splash.
Water shot from the two spigots.
April’s eyes bulged. “Sweet Jesus.”
She hurried to the tub, shut off the flow, and then stared dumbfounded at the draining water. Her heart pounded as she scratched her head and wondered out loud. “How did that happen? What’s going on?”
Tink.
A tiny crack developed on the upper right corner of the mirror.
April sucked in air and watched in disbelief as a jagged fissure slowly spread diagonally across the mirror, about to split the glass in two.
Smash!
April ducked and covered her head as the mirror shattered and shards of glass clinked into the porcelain sink and scattered onto the tile floor.
When she raised her head, April stared at the glassless frame awestruck and bewildered. “Sweet Jesus, it really happened. I didn’t imagine it. It’s not a delusion.”
April then experienced a paralyzing fear as she felt something like fingertips caress the back of her neck.
“Elena!”
