All I wanted from my dad was a few kind words, attention and love. He never gave me that. I also yearned for his approval. What I wanted the most was for him to be proud of me. Many children — later adults — feel similarly. We want validation from our parents and later from our spouses, managers and friends. Young adults often choose a profession that their parents suggest or inherit a family business. Ten, fifteen or twenty years later they realize they are not happy in their career and wonder why they made that choice. It’s because they wanted their parents’ approval.
