INTERVIEW

Q:Do you have any tattoos?  Where? When did you get it/them? Where are they on your body?

A:I do have a tattoo on my right shoulder blade. It’s been with me for so long that I often forget it’s there until one of my kids reminds me. It’s the Chinese symbol for Chi which roughly translates to life force. My mother is Chinese and is an amazing woman. She and her mother escaped from the mainland during the communist revolution by traveling across the country when she was only a little girl. She is one of the strongest people I have ever known. In many ways the tattoo is homage to my mother and my own Chinese heritage.

Q:Is your life anything like it was two years ago?

A:I am fortunate to say that my life is not dramatically different than it was two years ago prior to COVID-19. I work as institutional banker during the day and that is an industry which has not been impacted the same way as other industries. Like many people the key differences are related to my work location and schooling. Most of my work has been from home for much of the last eighteen months which means I spend a lot of time on Zoom or Microsoft Teams instead of flying. I have also been a part-time teacher helping to teach my six-year old while my wife has lead the way with my eight-year old. The combination of all of us learning and working from the same place can make it a little challenging at times but we have also gotten to spend an amazing amount of time together as a family.

That being said I do miss the personal travel to see my family in the US or to explore parts of the world my wife and I haven’t seen. I’ve been lucky enough to travel extensively over the last 30 years and I am looking forward to international travel from Australia opening up again soon.

Q:How long have you been writing?

A:I’ve been making up stories for a very long time but I have only been writing for about 4 years. I’d thought about writing my stories down for years but struggled to make the time. My wife and I took a trip to Egypt in 2017. We were lucky to have an incredible tour guide and Egyptologist named Sem Sem. I knew that I was going to write the first book before we left Egypt. I actually started outlining the premise for the book on the flight home. Now writing is part of me. It’s something that I prioritize and that will always be with me going forward.

Q:What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?

A: My advice is really simple, make time for writing as soon as you can. I wish that I had started years ago. It’s a craft that requires dedication and practice. The other thing I would say is to build a great team around you. I am very lucky to have two outstanding editors, Taylor Morris and Kate O’Donnell. While the stories have always been inside of me, I have learned so much from both of them in terms of refining and sharpening my writing style.

Q:Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.

A: The story for The Order of Time and Odin’s Door is based during the reign of King Harold Bluetooth in the Viking Age. King Harald, who ruled between 958 and 986, had a rotten tooth. Thus the name Bluetooth. The technology Bluetooth, which was a collaboration between two Scandinavian telecommunications companies, was named after King Harald. Harald was also famous for building ringed fortresses across Scandinavia. Seven of these fortresses have been discovered to date. The Order of Time and Odin’s Door imagines an eighth ringed fortress.

About the Series

Picture two twelve-year-old fraternal twins who are like night and day. She is a smart and highly organised MMA fighter. He’s not a fighter, he’s a lover of history, art and Star Wars. Despite their differences they are one formidable team. Together Anastasia and Edward Upston travel through time and navigate ancient civilisations, angry gods and mythical monsters in their quest to protect the integrity of human history.

About The Order of Time

Anastasia and Edward Upston are eleven year old twins who are different in almost every way. Despite this they are inseparable and he best of friends. They tackle the highs and lows of sixth grade together whether they are fending off bullies at the elite Blake Academy or examining rare antiquities at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Then: life gets complicated.

They discover that their friend and mentor, Dr. Gregorian, is part of a secret society called the Order of Time. It turns out that time is not fixed, it’s a fluid continuum where changes to the past can create ripples all the way through to the present. It unwittingly falls to the twins to travel back through time to ancient Egypt where they must overcome deadly assassins, evil high priests and vengeful gods in order to prevent disaster. Together Anastasia and Edward must navigate all obstacles to preserve the past and find their way back home.

About The Order of Time and Odin’s Door The orange light bathed the snow-covered fields as the fiery globe began to dip below the horizon. It was strange that something so beautiful could signal the arrival of something so evil. One thing twelve-year-old twins Anastasia and Edward Upston knew for sure was that when mortals were caught between two bickering gods nothing good would come of it. Surviving the Viking Age may be the hardest thing they ever do, if they can…

EXCERPT:

They started to leave when the room suddenly lit up with a strange purple light coming from under a closet door.

“Why is the closet glowing?” asked Edward, his voice trailing up an octave. “Maybe we should get out of here.”

“What if Dr. G’s in there? You know he always locks his door, but it was open tonight. Maybe he’s still here. He might need our help,” Anastasia said emphatically.

The light was getting brighter by the second. Now Edward could also hear a low humming noise.

“Stop being crazy, Anastasia! This is the part in the movies where you yell at the screen for the characters not to open the door. We are not going to open that door.”

“I’m not being crazy. If Dr. G is in there and needs help, we’ll never forgive ourselves.”

Edward looked at her pleadingly, but she wasn’t giving in. His shoulders slumped in defeat. Oh god, please don’t let there be a monster or anything really scary in there. Anastasia dragged him over to the closet door. The light pouring out around the cracks was incredibly bright and the humming was getting louder. She gripped the large, brass doorknob, took a breath, and opened the door.

INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I have always been intrigued and captivated by great storytelling.  Growing up, I never travelled beyond my Brooklyn neighborhood – except the occasional school trip; and so, I essentially lived my entire childhood vicariously through the exciting adventures I read about.

Although I always remained fascinated by the people and places those stories introduced me to, I was far more intrigued by how the stories were told.

From an early age, I recognized the complexity and difficulty of writing something that can excite, intrigue, inspire and impact others – and so, I maintained a high level of admiration for writers.

I am inspired by writers who are witty, mischievous with their play on words, writers that can tap into a deep well of knowledge and very subtly pull from multiple subjects to illustrate a point or to set the stage.

I am a very curious person, so a good book for me is one that poetically provides a crash course in any or all of the subjects that intrigues me - anthropology, psychology, astronomy, world civilization, evolution, politics, art history, theology, world cultures and traditions to name a few.

2. What elements are necessary components for this genre?

This children’s picture book was created for ages 3 – 6, and so I think the most important element is simplicity.  One of the greatest challenges I have ever faced, is to take such a serious and robust topic such as STEM subjects and make it digestible, engaging, and humorous without sacrificing essence of the subjects.

To that end, this book is less about science, but more about creating a nurturing environment of curiosity and adventure.  To do this, other necessary components are colorful and playful illustrations and characters that will bring the words to life and excite the imagination.

3. How did you come up with your idea for your book?

I believe that we learn as children to adopt false narratives such as the perception that aspirations are “unattainable,” “far-fetched,” or “unrealistic” simply because they seem out of reach for whatever reason at the time. We aren’t taught to look at failures as a success waiting to happen, or to look at barriers as a challenge that will instead teach us more of what we need to know to succeed.

Telling stories is an excellent way to inspire children.  Stories provide children with a view into new and exciting world of characters, places, cultures, and traditions.

Storytelling enhances creativity, inspires curiosity, and broadens a child’s immigration – making them more open to new ideas and concepts while teaching them about life, themselves, and others.

Sadly, children along all dimensions of diversity rarely see themselves represented in the characters of the books that they read.

My purpose is to be intentional about creating more diverse, equitable and inclusive stories that will inspire and cement deep within a child’s framework the confidence to achieve their dreams, regardless of their prevailing circumstances.

“I see me, therefore I can be”

4. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

LOL – in terms of expertise, I come empty handed. All I have to offer is lived experiences.

I wrote this book not from the perspective of an educator or a child psychologist, as I have no relevant credentials to speak of. But rather I wrote it from the perspective of a parent—a parent wishing to instigate in my son a curiosity for the way the world works, both in STEM and in the nuanced interplay of creativity, trial and error, experience, failure, and ultimately success.

I believe my lived experience as a child affords me at least a partially qualified opinion of how to foster a nutritious environment for the growth of ideas and possibilities. And so, for both my writing and my parenting, it is this inner child I draw upon, to guide my thoughts, words, and my actions so that I can sow small seeds of creative possibility.

Of course, if we are to achieve this ideal as parents, then we need to have actionable steps to take, to champion our children in their pursuit of knowledge and fulfillment.

5. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

Writing is the least practiced form of creative expression for me.  I have been painting and sculpting most of my life. I love to build.  In another life, I could be a carpenter or architect.  My wife comments that I get a deer in the headlights look when it comes to design and aesthetics – whether its cars, interior design, buildings, or a well-made piece of tailored clothing (l love a well-made custom suit).

Although creating is at the core of who I am – it is not the life I followed.  I served 9.5 years as a United States Marine and followed a traditionalist route.  I pursued a degree in finance and later earned a master’s in human resources.  Today, I serve as a Corporate HR Executive in a global 500 company.

As I begin to prepare my transition into the next phase of my life 20 years from now, I am working today to reignite my creative essence. Every day, I am working to practice natural skills that I have left dormant and unnurtured during my adult life. In essence, I am planting my own seeds of creativity today to share with the world tomorrow.

6. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I plan to continue writing – this first children’s picture book is one in a series of 4 focused on STEM.  From there, I plan to branch into other topics that resonates with me deeply such as sustainability – more specifically, living in harmony within our environments.

I believe it is possible to teach these things to children very early on – creating responsible and conscious adults.

The writing process can be excruciating for me.  I am still working on developing the confidence and discipline to create lengthier works.  Frankly, there isn’t a genre that I can speak to enough to take the arduous road of creating a full-length novel.

More to come – but for now, I love writing children’s picture book.

7. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?

Sure – here is an excerpt:

As far as the eye can see
I wonder what adventures wait for me!
Summer, spring, winter, and fall
I can’t help wonder about it all

Science is the way we see
What was, what is, and what can be

Earth Science, Life Science, Social Science…Whew!
Physical Science and formal Science too!

All the ways to tell the story of me and you

And everything in between
That can or can’t be seen

I can be a
Biologist…Meteorologist…Or Zoologist
I can be an Astronomer, Geographer, or Oceanographer…

Whichever I prefer!

8. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

I wrote the book with the intention of publishing – on my own or otherwise.  However, it took an entire lifetime to get the courage to actually put pen to paper.  It was not until the pandemic lockdown that I decided against my perfectionist nature and just to act and embark on the journey without setting the GPS.

9. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

The writing process for me has always been a challenging mental health journey.  It has never been a  pleasant experience.  Forget about the images you may have seen of a writer, at some far-off destination or in a picturesque local, with a glass of wine or whiskey, writing to their hearts desire against the rising or setting sun….my story is more like a scene from the exorcist.

That is because I edit as I write.  I am both the actor and director in real time.  Every word, every sentence is analyzed, critiqued, and judged in the moment.  I can go through an entire legal pad full of crunched paper to just complete a full paragraph.

10. How do you maintain your creativity?

To settle my mind, I clean – I love cleaning. I find cleaning to be cleansing.  Cleaning helps me remove mental blocks, relieve stress, reorients me and helps me get grounded.  I am most reflective and able to work through the most complex life situations after a full day cleaning marathon – literally from morning to early evening.   The thing is, I am a minimalist, and my living space, my office, my car, is always spotless – so it’s really about the process of cleaning that helps to cleanse my spirit and opens the portal to my creative side – so that’s my ritual.

BLURB:

Like the infinite-shade of colors, the richness of life is enhanced by our natural inclination, as creative beings, to hold distinct perspectives on just about any subject. Collectively, however, I believe we all appreciate the profound significance of all the things that influenced and molded us from an early age—the moments and events that are weaved intricately into our memories.

Who amongst us cannot recall a story, no matter what artistic form used to bring it to life: a book, a show, a play, a comic, a song, a movie, or even a real-life character (that family member, teacher, coach, or friend) who shaped the lens with which we view the world then, now, and always.

For this very reason, I believe children should see themselves represented in all areas of human endeavors, cementing deep within their framework the possibilities that await, regardless of prevailing circumstances.

My hope is to bridge the diversity gap in STEM by creating excitement around Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through diverse representation.

"I see me, therefore I can be."

So it remains, like the infinite shades of color, the richness of life is enhanced by the stories and experiences that holds us.

Of all the paths I can explore,

Of all the subjects I adore,

The world of science excites me more.

Science helps us see

What was, what is, and what can be

You’ll get a million questions from me!

I observe, I explore…

I’ll get to the core, that’s for sure.

What will I find...maybe a cure?

Or a giant fossil

Of a DINOSAUR!

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Having endless curiosity, Louis has always been enthralled by the inner workings of everything around him.

With a natural and insatiable drive to build, explore, and understand, one of his fondest childhood memories is harvesting toasters, microwaves, TVs, and other discarded electronics in his Brooklyn neighborhood so he could take apart and rebuild them, or scavenge parts to build his own remote-controlled cars or planes.

He is the first to admit that nothing ever worked as intended, or at all, for that matter, but that never really mattered to him. As long as he was dissecting, constructing, exploring and learning, his cup was always full.

Today, his tinkering looks very different. Louis spends countless hours building and rebuilding Lego sets with his four-year-old son.

With any free time left after work and family life (usually late at night), you can find Louis in his workshop (any available free space with a flat surface) writing, painting, sculpting or toiling over his photography; nonetheless, his deep love for STEM remains, and at its core feeds his endless curiosity and desire to understand the inner workings of everything.

GENRE  Young Adult

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:
What or who inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always felt like I was born a writer but the truth is my dad is a playwright so I’m sure that influenced me in many ways. I used to fall asleep to the sounds of his fingers pounding away on his vintage typewriter. It lulled me in the same way as rain hitting the roof. I’m also an actor and an artist but inside of my heart and mind, I’ve always felt that I am a writer first.
What elements are necessary components for this genre?
I think when writing young or new adult it’s important to put yourself in the shoes of your main character. To remember deeply, not just what it was like to be 17 for you, but also remember your friends at the time and the relatable experiences of growing up. And to never talk down to kids or teens, and to never lecture.
Just be honest. Be real.
How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
I was at a panel discussion with screenwriters and one of them told a story about how he used to take his daughter out every week to a restaurant so they could just have one on one father-daughter time. I thought that was so sweet. But then my writer (and also ADHD mind) started wandering off and creating a “what if” story of my own. I asked myself, What if the father abandoned his daughter and what if he comes back and wants to reconnect by taking her out to dinner? Now he’s doing it because he needs something from the daughter. He is after forgiveness.
What expertise did you bring to your writing?
In the story I make the father an addict, the mother bi-polar and our protagonist is a poet with some OCD tendencies. My older brother was an addict and I tried to save him. It didn’t work. I wrote about it here: https://psiloveyou.xyz/this-is-what-i-learned-from-trying-to-save-my-brother-from-addiction-b8840ec41553?sk=a4bc0f0a3f253a2f809e447c3034e32b
I relate to my lead because I too am a poet and feel everything intensely. In fact, a few of the poems in the book are ones I wrote when I was teenager.
What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
I was recently diagnosed ADHD as an adult. I was never tested as a kid but it explains so much of how I am and the way I create. I understand the challenges of thinking differently but I also appreciate the gifts it brings. Now that I know more about myself, It can only help my future stories. I like that we live in a world now that talks openly about things like this.
As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I’m working on another YA book, Memory Ghosts.It’s about a girl grieving her mother’s suicide. The girl meets an 80 year old Jewish/Buddhist woman who hires her to assist her on a long journey by foot in Los Angeles. In this book our protagonist is an artist and she draws and paints to express herself and understand herself better. I’m a visual artist as well so this book will be illustrated with my artwork. I thought it might be a graphic novel but I think it will be more of an illustrated novel.
Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?
Just a Girl in the Whirl
dreamtocry
It’s night. I’m sleeping.
I’m dreaming.
Dream Lauren is busy writing from up top herfavoritetree.
She looks down and winks at me. Real Me would never wink. Bad guys in movies wink. Still, this dream version of myself winks and it wouldn’t matter to her whether Real Me approves. Dream Lauren is not bothered by what other people think of her. Even if that other people is just another version of her.
In every dream, Dream Lauren drops down pages from her journal, and in every dream, I stand below with my arms outstretched, always ready to catch them as they float down.
She feels it build up inside her,
an inner quake setting off a tsunami that will destroy
everything
 in
its path.
a rise in the belly, coming in tidal waves. A tickle in the nose,
that isn’t an oncoming sneeze. She trained herself to ignore, to respond quickly.
She puts up sandbags to keep it away. her smile is her glass wall.
She can’t afford a crack in the surface. She’s gotten so good at pretending.
She can feign indifference with the best of them.
I wake up and grab my journal, and make a beeline for the bathroom in order to write it all down before I forget.
What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
I don’t really seek out much advice, to tell you the truth. I’ve been writing my whole life so I believe I need to just focus on my own thing. But the best sentence I ever heard about writing was simply -writers… write. It seems obvious but a lot of folx talk about writing more than they actually write. For wonderful advice about writing I highly recommend the book Bird by Birdby Anne Lamott.
Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I find outlining challenging. It hurts my head. However, I’m a big fan of Blake Synder’s books in the “Save the Cat” series about screenwriting. I do a “beat sheet” for my screenplays then I dive in. Every novel I’ve written so far was a screenplay first. So, in a way, my outline for the book, is the screenplay. It works so well for me I think I’ll just keep doing it like this.
How do you maintain your creativity?
I call myself a “creative compulsive.” I never have to think about maintaining it because it’s constantly flowing. Sometimes too much! I can’t do it all so I have to somehow figure out which things to pursue, which is just about following my gut. Creativity is my fav topic. I have a course onSkillshare called “Zen and the Art of Creativity” and one on Listenablecalled “Seize Your Creativity.”
EXCERPT:
In the past 747 days I’ve made 747th breakfasts for my family. I barely have to think about what I’m doing anymore, the eggs just poach themselves.  Doing the same thing, day in and day out, gives my life the feeling of being stuck in slo-mo. In fact, I’m moving so freakin’ slowly I may as well be standing still. It’s like I managed to step into a vat of cement while everyone around me is coasting along on one of those people movers they have at the airports. Also, my particular vat of cement happens to be on a carousel, going around and around and around. So, sure, there’s movement, only I’m not getting anywhere.
“Damn it.” I bend down to pick up yet another broken glass. My bad. As usual. When my mind wanders, it takes my coordination with it.
“Lauren. Don’t say damn.” my kid sis reprimands.
“You’re right, Sara. Sorry. Finish your scrambled eggs, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Ouch.” I cut my pinkie on a sliver of broken glass.
“We’re out of Band-Aids,” Matty informs. “You should get more.”
“Gee, thanks, sis. Don’t bother getting up.”
“I won’t,” she tells me as she continues scarfing down the food I made her.
Yep, this is my brood. Not on purpose, though. I mean, I didn’t plan this brood or birth this brood, it just sort of turned out that they’re now, mostly mine.
My eighteenth birthday is in 99.3105497 days away and then I’ll be free.
