LEARN MORE ABOUT JESSICA

1.    What or who inspired you to start writing?

I’ve always been writing newsletters and stories for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t sit down with the intention of writing a publishable story until almost four years ago. My daughter was in kindergarten, and hated reading, absolutely refused. That was the worst thing ever for me as a parent, and I set out to write a book she would enjoy, about superheroes. Now, I’m proud to say she reads well in both English and French.

2.    What elements are necessary components for this genre.

In science fiction romance, one must have a love story which involves some sort of science fiction, whether it be aliens, characters in space, a futuristic time, etc. The possibilities are endless.

3.    How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

It started as that superhero book for my daughter and quickly developed into something else. Though the story has gone through so many rewrites and revisions since then.

4.    As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I have two series I need to finish, and many individual story ideas in my head. Lots to do; I only need more time.

5.    Can you give us a sneak peak into this book?

Sure, here’s the blurb and an excerpt:

Lindsay Beckett longed to be reunited with her first love, Quinn Montgomery, until she learns the secret that sent him fleeing from her in the first place. He’s an alien, a Hemera, and she’s half-Hemera herself. As if that wasn’t enough to ruin her dreams of a perfect life, when their child is born, they discover she fulfills a prophesy told twenty light years away and many years ago. Lindsay wants to ignore it, until her husband is murdered and suddenly believing becomes a matter of survival.

Lindsay and her young daughter are forced to rely on another Hemera, her husband’s partner and best friend, Bryce Beuermann as more and more of the Hemera are slaughtered. Bryce will do anything to help his best friend’s widow—including suppressing his own deep feelings for her. But he must prove they can trust him, even pretending he doesn’t want her with all his heart.

Excerpt:
When Bryce and Lorne removed their socks and set their feet on the coffee table, she flushed. She'd had many opportunities over the summer to look at his feet, particularly when he wore only his swim trunks. But she’d kept her distance, catching only the occasional glimpse of his broad, bare chest or other parts of his body, wondering if they matched what she’d seen in her visions.
Both Bryce and Lorne's toes remained held apart by skin, noticeable skin. Unlike the translucent and pliable tissue which formed between her own toes, theirs appeared thicker, widening the total width of the front of their feet.
"We are not from around here," Lorne said. He removed his feet from the table and brushed them across the plush carpet. "Your mother, Quinn, and your father, Lindsay, as well as Bryce and I, are from another planet located twenty light years from Earth."
She turned to her husband, waiting for his reaction. They were his guests telling the ridiculous story. If they were friends of hers, she would have told them to leave.
Quinn only raised his eyebrows. She couldn't read his expression as he stared at Bryce. "This is not the time to be discussing this. We've just returned from out holidays, our honeymoon at that."
"No, this is the time. We should have talked about this long ago."
Her gaze shifted between the two of them. This has to be some kind of gag, but this is more likely to come from Michael and Francis, not Bryce, not based on anything Quinn had ever said about him. The punch line didn't come and Quinn gripped her hand tighter. This is no joke.
Maintaining his dry expression, Bryce continued. "I've known all along. I remember my trip to Earth and being placed with the Beuermanns. I don't remember my parents though." His chin fell to his chest. "It's not easy living with a secret like this. I figured my best friend should know."
Bryce told what he believed to be the truth, but despite her belief in aliens, she refused to accept anyone in the room came from anywhere but Earth.
"I'm sorry, Lindsay." Quinn refused to look at her, but maintained his hold on her hand.
She'd never felt more uncomfortable than this moment. What did Quinn believe? That he's an alien?

6.    Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I used to belong to a local critique group, and although I learned a lot from them, I found I wasn’t getting the feedback I wanted as none of them were romance authors. Right now, I have four awesome critique partners who help me to improve my writing all the time. And I am a huge fan of all of their stories, too.

7.    When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

I was in the middle of getting The Zurian Child ready for submission when Rebecca Royce, one of my critique partners, suggested I write short story for Decadent Publishing’s 1Night Stand line, and add my sci-fi twist to it. I did, and was lucky they decided to contract Celestial Seduction.

8.    What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

When I first joined the social networking ride, I connected with fantasy author, Lorna Suzuki. She was the first to tell me about critique groups, and how useful they can be. I immediately set out in search of one after that.

9.    Do you outline your books or just start writing?

It depends on the story. With all of them, I brainstorm in my head before I start writing. If the details are long and involved, I’ll write them down in point form notes. I generally have a basic idea of what’s going to happen before I write anything, but I’m not rigid about the details, as the plot generally changes once I begin.

10. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?

In The Zurian Child, I can’t pick just one. It was always whoever’s POV I was in at the time, even the antagonist, Isabel.

11. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?

A little bit of both. I love it when the ideas are flowing, but sometimes too many ideas hit me at once. Can be very overwhelming.

12. Anything else you might want to add?

You can find The Zurian Child here:

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today!

TWO TARNISHED ANGELS...

...a former priest and a former prostitute, risk their lives to save a baby from a beast-man's savage vengeance.

I invite you to join their adventure in LEGACY OF ANGELS, the second book of my LEGACY series, now available from Rogue Phoenix Press

In celebration of this new release, I'm starting a new blog tour today, May 7, with two stops!

Please join me at Books Are Magicwhere I talk about writing and time machines and favorites, and at Coffee Addicted Writertalking about how I came up with the plot for LEGACY OF ANGELS.

Now, I'll leave you with an excerpt from LEGACY OF ANGELS:

"I'm not safe anywhere." Terror beat in Claudia deGras' heart, pulsed through her veins, shut down any rational thought. Get out of here!

She bolted toward the door, not daring to look back as the sound of heavy footsteps followed her.

The old brown sedan sitting in the driveway always had the keys in the ignition. Most of the time, it started without much protest.

Claudia flung open the door and cranked the key. The engine caught and roared as she shoved the accelerator to the floor. Two doors banged shut as the old Buick slid sideways on the gravel, then found traction on the pavement.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Patrick O'Shea on the wide bench seat beside her, his hand braced against the dashboard for balance, but his face reflected his normal serenity.

Could she trust him? Did she have a choice? And where was she going?

She eased her foot off the accelerator and settled the old sedan into a speed that wouldn't get them stopped by the police, though patrols were rare on this sparsely traveled road in Eastern Oregon.

While she drove the highway in silence, the childhood memories of curses and shouting and fists landing heavy blows on her body receded, and her panicked mind calmed down.

No one had harmed her today. In fact, over the last few weeks the O'Shea siblings, including Patrick, had rearranged their lives to protect her from the man-beast who stalked her.

She shivered.

The man-beast was the real danger.

Everlasting Love

A new blog challenge circulating is to go to page 77 scroll to line 7 and copy the next 7 lines. My current work in progress doesn't have 77 pages yet so here are the seven lines from my book Everlasting Love a July release date. As Kevin drove to Miranda’s, Bill’s question repeated in his mind. ‘Did you remember anything else?’ He didn’t know why but he thought his question odd, almost unrelated to the conversation they were having. Kevin lifted one shoulder, Bill most be having a rough day he reasoned. He parked his pickup in front of her house. Jumping out, he glanced up and down the street to see if anyone was in the area.

Cliff Hanger Saturday Just Like the Matinees of Old

Cliff Hanger Saturday is a place where you can post your favorite "cliff hangers" of all time or just good writing at the end of the scene. (if not your own work, please give credit to the author and the book.) We all know, a scene should not end with anyone going to sleep. YAWN. But sometimes we see this. If the characters go to sleep, so do we.

So share favorites or write one here.

I have been posting excerpts for advertising and Rogue Phoenix Press. If you are writing an excerpt for something make sure that excerpt ends making the reader turn the page and read on. Do we want the reader up all night? Of course we do.

From my soon to be released, the revised Rebel Heart first book in the Earth and Wind series. Rebel Heart will be free on Amazon Kindle from June 20th to June 25th. Check it out.

She would not back down. "Even though my father suggested we marry--" she began, but Savage interrupted.

"Suggested? It was a command, babe, nothing more, nothing less. Neither of us have much of a choice. I plan to honor the arrangement, and I plan to hold you to it also."

You fell in love with him, a small voice sang out in her head.

"I fell in love with the Phantom," she said. "Who the hell are you?"

"I've arranged the marriage. You will come to know who I am, a man not so different from the Phantom." His voice was steel and his eyes harder still.

Thank you Genene -- Amber Angel for the wonderful cover!

I have to have a cliff hanger picture. hope I can find one I haven't used.

I think I've used this one but it is a tribute to all sunbathers every where and the coming sunny weather.

This is the 3rd book in the Lakota/Pinkerton series
Dakota's Bride, My Angel, The Locket, The Talisman, and Forever His

Oregon Coast,1894

Bone-weary from a hard day at sea, Misha trudged up the long mud-rutted road to the boarding house that sat on top a hill less than a mile outside Mist Harbor, Oregon. A thick, cold mist hovered close to the ground wetting everything: the rhododendrons that grew wild, the azaleas that lined the cement walkway to the front porch, and the saw grass that grew easily in the sandy soil. Misha paused a moment to push back a lock of hair that repeatedly fell across his brow and into his eyes.

The land was windswept and salt battered, yet he enjoyed the salt-taste of the air and the swooping sea birds as well as the playful sea animals. He loved the way the trees bent to the power of the wind and found a way to survive despite the brutality of the elements.

His purpose here was short lived, he reminded himself. He didn’t intend to find himself attached to these parts in any way.

He smelled of a hard days work. The lingering aroma of sweat and Chinook salmon filled his nostrils. It was not a scent he had any use for, but for the time being the job on the fishing boat gave him a reason for staying in the small coastal town. Right now he couldn’t wait to submerse himself in a hot bath, wash the stench from his body, and ease his stiff, strained muscles.

The sea had always been one of his favorite places. But fishing?

By God no, he’d just as soon relax and watch the sails billow on a clipper as the majestic ship rounded the horn or stand at the tiller with the wind whistling around him. He’d even rather battle a hurricane off the Bermudas.

Blending in with the people who lived in this small coastal village had been imperative.

The quest he’d undertaken had led him straight to Miss Ariel Cameron’s boarding house in Mist Harbor, and there the trail stopped. Thinking about Ariel set his nerves on edge.

Ariel was willow thin, femininely delicate, and hardly capable of the atrocities he’d set out to avenge less than a year ago. Yet the evidence he’d uncovered had sent him here, to her home. The name he’d followed had been her name. The men he’d followed had landed in Mist Harbor more than once, her father one of them.

He walked up the immaculately kept steps to the house and opened the door to the screened in porch.

"Misha," the captain boomed out a welcome. "Fine weather we’re havin’ now. Just right for the salmon runs."

The rocker squeaked as the captain moved back and forth in the wicker chair.

"Just right," Misha acknowledged and stepped through the next door to the parlor. A blast of heat met him as he nodded his head in polite recognition to the other borders. In a pale blue day dress, Ariel moved with a slight limp through the hallway and disappeared into one of the first floor rooms. Even though she seemed to favor one leg, the sway of her hips enticed all of Misha's senses.

He didn’t understand the feeling but in a way no other woman had touched him, she beckoned to him. Her amber colored eyes were wide and when she smiled, they glistened and shimmered, reminding him of the bronze mosques in Constantinople when the sun beat upon them. Miss Ariel Cameron was unique--unconventional--and she fascinated him. She was the key to his revenge as well as his salvation.

 Review

The Locket is a very exciting tale with a dramatic setting. Overall, this is a very entertaining story.

Thursday and It's the Weekly Check In

Thinking of Genene and all her doggies.

This is the Rogue's Angels weekly check-in. Every Thursday we encourage the Angels and visitors to let us know how their writing is going.

How well are you doing?

Had problems this week? That's ok. Just sit down this coming week and write. Whatever you do, don't let difficulties from the week before get in your way this week.

Every word is one word closer to the finished product.

Had a great week? Keep it up, the momentum is on your side.

I've finished edits for Rebel Heart and I'm working on edits for Sharks which will be out as a novella on Amazon as soon as I'm satisfied with it.

Please Welcome Lilia Birney author of To Catch a Thief-Taker

Lila Birney is here today. The Angels welcome her and hope she has a fantastic day on our site as well as a great tour.

Lilia will be awarding a $50 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. So make sure you leave a comment. I'm sure she likes to hear from all of you.

Interview

1. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?
There's a lot of me in Jane's character--Penelope's best friend. She's a writer, and a bit wry in her sense of humor. She's also much less beautiful and blonde than Penelope, and so I find her much easier to relate to.

2. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
I do belong to a critique group, and I find their help to be invaluable. When I first started writing fiction, I had no idea what I was supposed to do, and my writing was very passive. My crit group helped me strengthen my skills as a writer so that I feel confident enough to keep writing fiction.

3. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I am in a crit group with writers Ava Stone, Jerrica Knight-Catania, and Catherine Gayle. They are the ones who encouraged me to try self-publishing on Amazon. In fact, my first novella, From Air to Eternity, was published as part of a series with Jerrica.

4. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I'm a plotter. I can't help it. I need to know where my characters are going before I get started. Sometimes I may veer off slightly from what I planned, but I like having a road map.

5. Do you have an all time favorite book?
I could read Jane Eyre over and over again. Same with Gone With the Wind.

6. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
The next story in the Liberated Ladies series will focus on Jane's romance with a Bow Street Runner. When a copycat thief starts taking Jane's mysteries a bit too literally, she is called in to provide assistance on the case. It's really a lot of fun.

7. Your interview will be posted May 2nd. Mother's Day is coming. Is there a family tradition or recipe for this wonderful day you would like to share?
My favorite Mother's Day was a year or so ago. My husband and daughter took me to the Ava Gardner museum in Smithfield, NC. It's an amazing place--they have so many of her costumes. I am an old movie buff, so it's like seeing the Holy Grail.

8. What is your favorite reality show?
I love Dancing with the Stars. It has everything. Music, dance, hot guys in skimpy costumes--what's not to like?

9. If you were a casting director for the film version of your book, who would play your lead roles? Well, I can't think of any modern actors. Penelope has a lot of Fay Wray in her. Pierce is akin to Joel McRae.

10. Anything else you might want to add? When I was writing, I listened to "Lonely Boy" by the Black Keys to get into Pierce's character, and "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls to get into Penelope's character.

Thanks Christine

EXCERPT

She gathered her skirts and took a step, only to be caught around the waist from behind. Unable to breathe from the pressure of the arm around her middle, she kicked backward, connecting with her assailant's right knee.

"Damnation!" A familiar voice swore, and her captor released her. Rubbing her ribs, she turned to see Pierce kneeling in the dirt.

"Pierce, are you terribly hurt?" She knelt beside him, tucking her skirt to pad her knees. "I'm so sorry. You frightened me. I didn't know it was you."

"I was worried when I returned to the carriage and you weren't there," he gasped, rubbing his kneecap. "I should know now, I need never worry for your safety again. Who knew a lady's boot heel could be quite so painful?"

"You shouldn't have grabbed me so," she replied tartly. "How was I supposed to react? Here we are in the yard of a most notorious brothel—any man with a grain of sense would have approached me differently."

"Believe me, madam, I am regretting my mistake most heartily at the moment." He gingerly flexed his leg, grimacing slightly. "What the devil are you doing out of the carriage anyway?"

"I saw a servant passing by, and thought it would be wise to question her." She took his leg in both of her hands, pressing it gently. Heavens, what a strong, muscled leg he had. She was thankful for the darkness, which hopefully covered her blush. "Does this hurt?"
"I'll survive." He leaned back on his elbows in the grass, staring at her from under lowered brows. "I was concerned for your safety, Lady Annand."

"Thank you, but I can defend myself. As you now know." She withdrew her hands from his leg, keeping her eyes lowered. If he read her thoughts at that moment, how he would laugh at her—how everyone would laugh. The Ice Goddess, reduced to nothing but a bowl of porridge after touching a man's knee.
