Average Joe and the Extraordinaires
by Belart Wright

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Action Adventure, Young Adult, Urban Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always had a really good imagination, but it took the encouragement of my older brother and my high school creative writing teacher to make me really take my talents seriously.

2. What elements are necessary components for this genre?
I’m not too sure.  I was never really someone who paid attention to genres.  I only cared about the book’s blurb, its cover, and the story within.  I’ve only recently given some thought into the various genres and am still learning about them.

3. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
Average Joe and the Extraordinaires comes from an idea I had, a challenge really, to create a book about an average guy that takes on impossible odds.  From there AJE became a book about a boy trying to save his town from an evil corporation, which then went in a whole different direction to become what it is today.

4. What expertise did you bring to your writing?
My vast knowledge of videogames and other fictional worlds is actually very influential to my writing.  Besides that, I don’t have any particularly good skills outside of writing *laughs*.

5. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
Only that I would love to spend much more of my time writing more books.

6. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
Books, books, and more books!  I have a prequel for Average Joe and the Extraordinaires called Liandra and the Dream Reader that’s set to release in 2016 and I’m working on the direct sequel to Average Joe, Average Joe and the Beauty, which should be out at the end of 2016.  I’m also working on a new series of LitRPG novels set in the fictional VR dark fantasy game called Project DH.  You can preview that series on my Wattpad page (https://www.wattpad.com/story/53230863-hell's-glitch-escape-from-adventure).

7. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?
I’d rather stay as myself, but take Joe’s place in the story.  I wanted readers to be able to leap into the story from Joe’s point of view in that manner.  But maybe I’d be Byron, the lackey of Team Badd Azz.  Those guys seem to have a lot of fun.

8. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?
Yes, you can find a seven chapter preview on my Wattpad page (https://www.wattpad.com/story/29306421-average-joe-and-the-extraordinaires).

9. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
I’m not in a group like this.

10. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
What really made me pay attention and dive into self-publishing were the multitude of blog posts dedicated to explaining the ins and outs of the process.  My writing style is different to say the least so I wasn’t sure that I would be a good fit for a traditional publisher without my original vision being greatly compromised.  Self-publishing seemed like a very awesome prospect especially the pure creative freedom that it could theoretically bring.

11. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
I don’t really see it as best and worse, but rather what works for me over what doesn’t work for me.  I’ve read a lot of advice from top notch writers and bloggers alike informing new writers to simply keep writing and publishing, as many quality books as possible.  That, for me at least, is the most straightforward and writer controlled part of the self-publishing process.  It’s great advice because it gives you something to focus on, something that’s completely in your power to complete.  The least useful advice I’ve gotten was an article that mentioned that new writers should skip getting a professional editor.  I wag my finger at this.  Self-publishers should hold themselves to the same standards as traditional publishers when it comes to insuring great quality for the readers.

12. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I do a little of both, though for the last few years I’ve preferred a detailed outline to help ensure a smooth continuity.  I usually have a really good sense of my story either way it goes.  Writing without an outline does oftentimes “break the ice” really well when you’re overthinking something or unconfident about what you’re writing.

13. How do you maintain your creativity?
It’s easy for me, I have an active imagination.  What’s hard is maintaining the necessary energy levels to use that imagination after working shifts at my two day jobs.  For that, I take “cat naps” and drink caffeinated beverages.

14. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?
This one is tough for me because I literally loved them all, even the bad guys.  I’ll say the surprisingly true answer here though.  It’s Joe, the main average, not so special protagonist of the story.  While the plot of the book mostly centers around Liandra’s quest and Joe is simply pulled along for the ride, it’s very courageous for someone so normal to take part in the dangers presented in the book just to help someone else.  Joe does a lot of little things that really show that there are a multitude of ways that someone can be extraordinary.  And he wants to be extraordinary, I can identify with that!

15. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?
Probably more like a plotting squirrel, always looking for a nut.  But I have all sorts of plotting squirrels.  For this particular tale they’re a little more gentle than usual, but they may change for the sequels.  You never know with those plotting squirrels.

16. Anything else you might want to add?
Thanks for your interest in my writing!  I hope to provide you all with gripping content for many years to come!

EXCERPT:

The brunette woman barely heard her, only figuring out what she said by reading her lips.  She continued to watch her body language closely. The blonde looked frantic as she surveyed the situation below her. The group of people were being escorted into the elevator. The blonde suddenly stood up as the kid with the silver aura, a dark-skinned little girl with almost no hair, was almost at the elevator doors.  She looked ready to leap down and attempt a rescue, but the fool had no idea how outmatched she was, or perhaps she just didn’t care.

AUTHOR Bio and Link:

Belart Wright was born and raised in Detroit Michigan with a short but adventurous stint in St. Ignace during his childhood. Always poor, Belart had to learn to use his imagination to fuel the fun he had. Whether it was drawing cool and dangerous looking heroes to creating fully fledged storylines with his action figures to writing stories about kids similar to himself with fantastic abilities and destinies, Belart was always an expert in delving into other worlds that were not his own.

Always naturally talented at writing, it took the advice of his brother, and a little creative boost from his high school creative writing teacher to get him to realize that writing was something he could do really well and pursue as a career. To this day he revels in building worlds and characters from the ground up such as the worlds of Hell Warriors, Story of K, Cyborgs and Deadmen, and Pannam which are all working titles.

In his spare time Belart tries to update his two blogs whenever he can, but mostly just ends up writing or editing. As a huge gamer he plays a lot of games online and off with his favorites at the time being Borderlands 2, Phantasy Star Online, X-Men Legends, and Dark Souls. He just wishes he had more time to whittle his impossibly long gaming list down which goes all the way back to PS1 and Sega Genesis classics. He and his buddies at FlubberKnuckle Studios are also working on several new game IPs. He is also patiently waiting for the next installment of the superb Legacy of Kain series.

INTERVIEW:

What elements are necessary components for this genre?
Likeable characters are a must if you want to keep your audience interested until the end. People need to care enough for your heroes to hold their breath when they walk down a dark alley.

The other thing you can’t screw up, when you’re doing a mystery novel, is the plot. It needs to be strong, with twists and cliffhangers. It must keep the readers on their toes throughout the story. You also need to be careful to resolve everything by the end of the book… no loose ends (unless you’re doing a series, and you have larger story-arcs that play out over several books).

Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I’m obsessive about outlining. It has become a pivotal part of my work method. This book’s my fourth, and if you were to ask me what the biggest difference is between how I approached book one and book four, the answer would be: outlining more. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s important to have everything figured out beforehand. Now, I spend weeks, months even, carefully planning out the story before I type down the first word.

How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
Blind Chess is the direct continuation of the previous book, Danse Macabre, and the conclusion of a grand story-arc that begun in book one. Technically, you can read it as a stand-alone, but it makes more sense to have read the other ones too (especially book three).

What are the biggest challenges of writing books which are part of a series?
Well, every book should be able to stand on its own, because you never know when new readers will be joining in. That means a beginning and an end to each story. Also, a modicum of back-story must be integrated in each book. Not too much (so it isn’t boring for the people who have read the other books) but enough so that new readers aren’t completely lost in your universe. It’s like the “previously on…” intros you get on TV.

You also need to reward the audience that has been there since the beginning… and that’s where story-arcs come in. I love story-arcs, I love reading stories with long arcs in them. Like when you’re reading book ten, and you remember something that happened in book three and that directly ties in with current events. These moments make me go, “Oh, yeah; that’s clever!”

From a writing perspective, it means you have to plan your stories well ahead. Before writing the first book, you have to decide if it’s part of a series or not. If you’re doing a series, then you need to do some basic outlining on the next books at the same time as you work on the detailed outline of book one.

Can you give us a sneak peak into this book?
After being shot at the end of book 3, Neve lays in the hospital, comatose — prognosis unknown. It’s up to Egan to pick up the torch and go after the man who ordered the hit on his partner, alone. That’s a big step up for a man who, just a year ago was nothing more than a blind middle-aged History professor with a the most mundane and boring of lives.

Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?
Egan; he really shines in this book. He was a really hollowed man before Neve came along. He had is uncomplicated life, with a carefully planned routine. She broke the walls he had built around himself and shook his life up-side-down.

Neve gave Egan a chance of becoming someone better, something more. Everything led to this moment — his final trial. Blind Chess is the story I’ve been dying to tell since the beginning of the series.

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I’m going to take a little break from the Neve & Egan cases series — it’s all I’ve been doing for the past four years and I need some time-off. I’ve started working on a new series, and I’m really exited about it… new characters, new genre…

EXCERPT:

A gentle wind is blowing, but it is too cold for the leaves to carry any scent. Seconds tick away, as I wait.

A few minutes before the half hour, I hear the whining of the Lantesks’ garage door and soon after the rumble of a car engine coming to life. Mrs Lantesk is on time to go to work.

Ten feet long the old woman had said of the gravel lane. It isn’t much and I count the seconds after I first hear the crunching of gravel under the car’s tyres. On three, I take a large step forward, bracing myself for the impact I know is coming.

An instant later, the front of Mrs Lantesk’s car hits me on my right side and I fly to the ground, instantly losing all sense of direction. Up is down, down is left and I am only certain of one thing.

I hurt.

Turns out, no matter how ready you are for it, no matter how much planning is involved, or how carefully you give in to the motion and roll to the floor to absorb as much of the momentum as possible... getting hit by a moving vehicle hurts.

The car comes to an abrupt halt an instant later, tyres screeching against the gravel. The engine dies and I hear the car door open. It is followed by a steady stream of feminine and high-pitched, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.’

Monica Lantesk must be wearing heels for I hear her feet tapping the pavement as she hurries towards where I lie sprawled.

‘Are you all right?’ she asks in between another chortle of oh-my-Gods.

I am, for the most part. I’m not seeing stars or anything and I take quick stock of the situation. Nothing seems broken; my glasses are missing, but I still have my cane in hand. I push myself up on one elbow and make a show of moving the cane about in what I hope is a dazed and confused manner. There is another wave of oh-my-Gods, as the woman realises I am blind and she starts to pat me awkwardly on the shoulder.

New Year Resolutions - Please just shoot me!

There it is -- the wish list, resolution list, whatever you want to call it. The title is at the top of the page and you've drawn a really cute chubby cherub with a new year banner across his chest. But the rest of the page is blank and it screams at you to fill it with great, NEW ideas.

Every year you put down quit smoking, diet or going to the gym and you are really resolved -- for the first six weeks. But then the inevitable happens. You're bored and no amount of change up makes a difference. So what do you intend to do this year and MAKE a difference?

I just happen to have a suggestion that might work.

Make a list for your eyes only of those things you LOVE to do that no one knows. [Let's keep this above board and legal.] Until recently, very few people knew that I'm a talented seamstress. I come by it naturally as my grandmother, who taught me along with my mum, made her living as a tailor. I have an enjoyable contralto singing voice. I can play the piano, accordion, flute, saxophone, guitar - regular and electric bass, drums - regular and conga and I'm sure I'm missing several instruments.

There are other things I'm accomplished at like water color painting, however, you need to make the list for yourself. THEN, pick one of those hidden talents you have and set a goal this next year to improve this gift. Maybe you're fluffy because you love food. Well, find a way to make tasty versions of your favorite dishes with half the calories; become Julia Child, only thinner.

Set an outrageous goal and take small steps to accomplish it because you know you can and it makes you happy. When we do those things we love, all the naysaying and self loathing falls away.

Love yourself this year. Make that item #1 on your New Year Resolution list.

EXCERPT:

Look at my stash, see all the treats?
See all the cupcakes and pickled pigs feet?
You can see I'm a mermaid
who wants to eat... everything!

I eat every second I'm waking
I'm so fat that I'm breaking the floor
Double chins?
I got twenty!

But so what?
I don't care!
I want more!

I need to eat what the humans eat
I'd like to eat when the food is still dry
I want to eat some fresh...
Uggh... beef!

Down in the brine the food tastes so bad,
when all you're allowed is some seaweed to live by,
None of that stuff that's so salty and...
mmm mmm mmm... Sweet!

What do I care
if all the laws
say we have to stay hidden?

And what do I care
if eating of meat
is strictly forbidden?

I'm addicted to food
but it tastes so good
so I don't give a single crum about rules;
want more yummies, dipped in honey,
no one to intrude.

Off by the ships
I get just get what drips
off of the sides, or they throw in barrels.
No primo stuff like
fresh dip and…
uggh... chips!

I want to munch,
I want to brunch,
I want to eat the thing they call lunch!
Sweets and the meats...
I need to eat
all of that food.
