Twilight was settling over the city when he returned to Jenny's office. She still sat in the same chair with her leg propped up, but had opened her laptop and stared at the screen with her lips pursed.
"How's the ankle?" Thomas asked.
She glanced up. "Still hurts a bit."
"I brought ice." He held up a slightly melted bag of ice, then placed it carefully on her ankle. "I'll be right back."
As he unstrapped the picnic basket from the back of his motorcycle, an arrow of foolishness once more shafted through him. Well, let her laugh. They needed to eat, didn't they?
But Jenny didn't laugh. She silently watched him toss a make-shift tablecloth over the desk, set the candle in the middle and light it, then dish up the food on the fancy clear plastic plates.
"Not quite an exclusive French restaurant, but we can do that when your ankle is feeling better."
Jenny continued to watch him silently, worrying her lower lip between her teeth.
"So say something. Did I buy the wrong kind of wine?"
"This..." Jenny cleared her throat. "This is one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me."
