Without conscious intent, THE BODYGUARD became a tri-holiday book:
--A scene at Halloween that pushes the heroine, Julia, to realize courage comes in the midst of terror, and galvanizes Mitch to step into his bodyguard persona once again to protect the people he has come to love.
--A scene at Thanksgiving that finds both Julia and Mitch struggling with raw emotions.
--The wrap-up miracle scene at Christmas.

Since it's close to Thanksgiving, I'd like to share part of the Thanksgiving scene from THE BODYGUARD. Amid the major turmoil going on in their lives, Mitch and Julia find simple things that help brighten the day.

The short drive to Mt. Hood passed mostly in companionable silence. However, once snowflakes started falling, Julia sat up straighter in her seat. “The snow is so beautiful. I could sit for hours and watch the flakes come down.”

“So why don’t you live in snow country?” Mitch glanced at Julia before returning his attention to the packed snow surface of the road.

“More jobs in the valley.”

They lapsed into silence once more. Julia watched the snow deepening along the road as they drove closer to the mountain. Once in the parking area, Mitch helped Julia strap on the skis, patiently sliding along beside her as she adjusted to the awkwardness of having something attached to her feet that was as long as she was tall.

“How long does it take to get used to these?” Julia laughed as her feet tangled together. She would have landed on her fanny in the snow if Mitch hadn’t caught her under the arms.

“We spend most of the winter on skis in Idaho,” Mitch said. “After a while, it feels funny not to be wearing them.”

Other things feel funny too, Julia thought, as Mitch’s nearness stirred a fluttering in her belly. She was a free woman now. She didn’t have the excuse of being legally tied to another man to stop her from pursuing a relationship with Mitch. So why did she hesitate?

“I’ll race you to those trees.” Mitch indicated a stand of tall fir trees pointing like giant green arrows toward the sky. “Do you want a head start?”

“How about if I just tumble forward instead of trying to stay upright?”

Mitch smiled. “Last one there is a mushy snowball.”

Julia took the head start Mitch offered and managed to stay on her skis for most of the journey, only falling three times in the fifty-yard distance to the trees.

As he did with the twins, Mitch adapted his skills to a lower level without making Julia feel like a burden. He grinned at her as they reached the trees, then indicated a point further along the trail.

Before too long, Julia was moving steadily over the gentle swells of snow with enough confidence to enjoy the winter wonderland around them. “It really is beautiful here.”

“Yeah.” Mitch side-stepped out of the way of another skier sliding erratically down the trail.

“Except for out-of-control skiing objects,” Julia joked as the person passed by them and continued on down the trail.

“Let’s take a breather.” Mitch broke a path off to the side of the trail, then slid the backpack off his shoulders. He dug out two chocolate bars and handed one to Julia. “Our Thanksgiving feast.”
