Hathor Legacy: Outcast
by Deborah A. Bailey

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?
I've always been a writer and a reader. When I was a younger, I'd write stories and draw my own comics. Probably the biggest inspiration was watching Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. Writing is something I have to do, whether it's writing a fiction story or a non-fiction blog post.
2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
I was inspired by a couple of things actually. As I mentioned, being a long time Star Trek fan, I've always been interested in stories about space exploration. But I was also inspired by my years working in the corporate world. It was easy for me to create a culture where corporations run things. All I had to do was think about my own work experiences.
In the future, I think corporations will probably be very similar to what they are now. Though I'm not sure if that will be a good or bad thing! That's how I got the idea for the culture of the planet, Hathor and the planet that Jonathan is from, Astarte.
Romantic suspense is a favorite genre of mine, so it was easy for me to combine that element with a futuristic setting.
3. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I'm working on the second book of the Hathor Legacy series. After that's done, I have ideas for a contemporary romance novella, and another futuristic novel. I'm also a freelance writer of non-fiction books and articles, so that's always going to be part of what I do.
4. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?
My favorite character is Nadira--which isn't hard to choose because she's the heroine. Though she had some tough experiences in her younger years, she's been able to create a place for herself as a Guardian. But the best part is that she has the power to read minds and telekinetic abilities that allow her to move objects. She's like a super heroine, in a way. There are times when being able to do a little mind reading would really come in handy.
5. Can you give us a sneak peak into this book?
Certainly! Here's an excerpt that takes place after Jonathan has arrived on Hathor in search of his father. There's still tension between him and Nadira, but their attraction is growing as well.
A couple walked past them, so wrapped up in each other that they bumped into Jonathan. He absently nodded to them as they apologized, then continued on.
"Guess we're in the way," he said, as he took her arm and led her over to the side. "Look, I'm going to the Emerald Club to check in. Why don't you come with me?"
Why was he standing so close? Did he realize how hard it was to look into those grey eyes and stay focused on her work? Not to mention she wasn't used to having to look up to make eye contact with anyone.
Jon was very much aware of the effect he had on women. All that smiling and touching. He knew exactly what he was doing to her. But she was determined to keep her distance and stay detached. No matter how hard she had to work at it.
She placed her hands against his chest and nudged him. He took a step back, but she felt him resist being moved more than that. Underneath her palms she could feel his heartbeat pulsing against her. It was causing all kinds of reactions in her body that she didn't want to think about right now.
"Do you like touching me?" he asked, a slow smile on his lips.
She jerked her hands away as though she'd been burned. "You don't have to stand so close."
"I thought we were friends. We just had dinner didn't we? Come walk with me. We can talk on the way."
She didn't want to go anywhere with him. How dare he ask her such a thing. Who did he think he was?
"I could use your help. Okay?"
Another smile. Why did he keep doing that? Brant had instructed her to protect Jon. And who knows, Ilana Travac might show up. Yes, it made sense to go with him. It was part of her job.
"We should take a transport," Nadira replied. "It'll be quicker."
6. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
Years ago when I took writing classes at a local county college, a few other writers and I formed a group. Right now it's just two of us, and we read and critique each other's work. I think groups can be a great help because you can bounce ideas off of other writers. Getting that feedback gets you out of your own head. Usually you're too close to your story to be able to tell what's working and what isn't. Critique groups can be very helpful if you maintain a level of respect for each other's work.
7. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
The best advice I ever received was from another writer who suggested that I write everyday. It does make a big difference in your creativity if you do that. Even when you don't feel like it--especially when you don't feel like it!
The worst advice came from someone who told me there was no need to write, because we'd never be as good as the top authors out there. She obviously didn't believe she could learn or grow as a writer, so she didn't want to try. Not the best advice for any writer to receive. But thankfully I ignored it and kept on going.
8. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
I'm definitely a "pantser" when it comes to outlining. But when I started working on book two, I wrote a four-page synopsis of the story. That way I had a roadmap of how the story would go. I don't think I could ever do a regular outline because it feels too restricting. The synopsis gave me structure without being too rigid.
9. How do you maintain your creativity?
The best way I've found to maintain creativity is to keep creating. If I write everyday, I can stay connected and keep my ideas flowing. Exercise also helps a lot. I think it works because if you stay in motion, you can keep everything moving. That's why I hate taking long breaks when I've finished a writing project. Once I stop, it's hard to get going again.
10. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?
Sometimes they're a bit of both! I think it's easier to get ideas when you're already working on something. Maybe it's because ideas are flowing while you're writing. What I try to do is write down the idea, then put it in a folder on my computer. That way, I can always get back to it later.
Sometimes when I go back to ideas, they're not as interesting as they were when they popped up. So I think it's best to put them aside for a while and see if they're just distractions. It's great to get ideas, though. When you're blocked, it's really frustrating. But it can be challenging to stay focused when you're trying to finish your WIP.
11. Anything else you might want to add?
Thanks so much for inviting me to stop by your blog and share my book with your readers!
On the planet,
Hathor, a powerful group called the Guardians serves as the security force for
Novacorp, the corporation that runs Hathor with its ruthless monopoly. Nadira,
as one of the most powerful Guardians, is expected to use her intuition and
telekinetic powers to keep the capital city safe from thieves and intruders.
Jonathan Keel,
son of a mine CEO on the nearby planet, Astarte, is wealthy, privileged and
used to getting what he wants. When his father goes missing after a robbery and
explosion at the mine, he defies the authorities and heads to Hathor to search
for him and for the robbers.
Struggling with
their growing desires, and chased by company security, Jon and Nadira find that
solving the crime leads them to endure betrayals from the people closest to
them, as secrets are revealed that not only link their pasts but also threaten
to destroy Jon's family and separate him from Nadira forever.

She
dashed up the ramp. Now he knew he had her. He slowed his pace as he approached
the bridge. A small group of tourists exited as he got on the ramp. Two of the
women were laughing, their faces animated as they clung to each other. What a
contrast to the woman he was pursuing. Nadira acted like she'd rather be locked
in a mineshaft than to show any humor.
Jon
strode across the bridge. Could she sense him coming? He hoped so. By now she
had to know she wasn't going to get away from him.
When
she got down the ramp, Nadira stood off to the side, waiting. She wasn't
smirking anymore. But she wasn't fearful either. Instead, she glared at him,
her brown eyes defiant, her lips pursed. Funny, the more annoyed she tried to
be, the more amused and attracted he was.
"So,
we meet again," he said. "Why did you run away?"
"I
wasn't running."
"Okay,
you weren't. Why were you watching me? I thought I was cleared."
She
looked away for a moment, composing her thoughts. "You're not under
suspicion, Mr. Keel. But Ilana Travac is."
"Then
why follow me? I told you I don't know where she is."
"She
might contact you."
"Why
can't you find her? Don't you have special Guardian powers or something?"
She
stiffened. So, Nadira didn't like to be questioned. Good. He didn't like being
questioned either.
