BLURB:
Joel Canfield looks into his camera and discovers the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen, Heather Garity. At her best friends wedding she becomes the photographer’s center of interest. Joel has difficulty taking the lens from Heather and pointing it at the bride, Amelia.
Heather has a boyfriend. When she sees her sister kissing her boyfriend, she disavows relationships, at least until she finishes school and owns a florist shop.
Many twists and turns bring the couple together at the beach, but lies and manipulations drive them apart.
This is a well-written novel that will have you turning the pages to find out what will come next. The plot is believable and the characters are loveable. Love at First Click is a sweet romance you will want to read over and over.
EXCERPT:
My God, she was gorgeous. Especially, when she smiled like that. And it was a smile just for him. He wished he had his camera around his neck so he could capture that perfect smile in that precise moment“Hi, again,” Heather said.
“Hello there,” Joel replied.
“Shall we get some food?”
“Sure. I’m famished after that run.”
“Me, too,” admitted Heather.
“So, what brings you here?” Heather asked as they worked their way through the buffet line.
“I was hungry and you said I could join you, remember?” Joel grinned at her. He hoped she knew he was teasing.
She cuffed him on the arm.
Yep, she understood a teasing when she got one.
“Seriously, what made you choose this resort?” she asked.
She doesn’t know!
Her best friend set her up on the ultimate surprise blind date and she doesn’t realize it yet. No sense slapping her in the face with it. He’d just let the facts unfold. She would know soon enough she’d been set up.
I hope she won’t mind when she finds out.
“I needed to get away and relax for a few days. I’ve been working too hard,” Joel said, nonchalantly spooning some scrambled eggs onto his plate.
“Me, too. Working, getting ready for Amelia and Noah’s wedding, and studying. I’m glad school’s out for the summer.”
“You go to Anton U?”
Heather nodded.
“My alma mater. I graduated five years ago. It’s a good school. Go Panthers!”
Heather laughed. “Yep, we had a great basketball season last year.”
“Sure did.” Joel poured a glass of orange juice. “How much longer have you got?”
“Almost done. One more term to finish up in the fall.”
“What are you studying?”
“Majoring in business, minoring in plant biology.”
“Interesting. What do you hope to do with your degree? Will you be a scientist and sell your plant-science secrets?”
Heather grinned and shook her head as she reached for a bagel. “I’d like to start my own florist shop, with a gift store, and maybe a little greenhouse, so I can grow some of the flowers and potted plants.”
“Sounds like a great plan. You mentioned work. Where do you work now?”
“I’m the floral design assistant at Bellham Blooms.”
“Ah. So, you arranged the flowers you brought to me in the tire vase then?”
“Yes. I designed and arranged the flowers for Amelia and Noah’s wedding, too.”
“Very nice. The flowers were beautiful.” You’re beautiful – beautiful, talented, and driven. “So, you’ll be experienced when it comes time to open your own shop.”
Heather hesitated. “Yes,” she finally said.
Joel put a piece of whole wheat bread in the toaster furnished for guests, “Why the hesitation?”
“Christina, the owner of Bellham Blooms, has been so good to me. I don’t want to step on her toes, or cause hard feelings, when I open my own shop.”
When she opens her own shop. Not if. I like her confidence.
“You could open a shop in Anton. That would be far enough away that it shouldn’t cause problems.”
Heather’s eyes sparkled. “That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking.”
Joel thought of how perfect his rental house would be for a flower shop. It was a big Victorian, similar to the house he lived in, just half a block up the street. He didn’t bring up the idea though. Not yet. He’d see how things unfolded with Heather first. If things went as he hoped, maybe one day they’d both be business owners on the same block. And maybe beyond that they’d get married and raise kids together under the same roof.
Whoa!
There he went jumping the gun, again. It seemed so easy to do where she was concerned. He’d never been kicked with the love shoe so suddenly, and so hard before. It was disconcerting.
Heather spooned fresh strawberries into a bowl and grabbed some packets of blackberry jam. “See you at the table.”
“I’ll be there as soon as my toast pops up.”
There’s a part of my anatomy that threatens to pop up every time you are near…
When Joel was seated, Heather said, “This vacation is such a nice way to start off summer break.”
“It is,” Joel agreed, although for a wedding photographer, there was no such thing as a summer break. Summer was the most popular season for getting married.
Maybe Heather and I could plan a June wedding for next summer….
Joel caught himself raising his hand, and brought his arm back into submission before he planted a heel to his forehead. Where were these premature thoughts coming from anyway?
“So you’re here by yourself?” Heather asked.
“Uh-huh.” Joel’s voice cracked. “Why do you ask?”
“I thought Alli might have come with you.”
“No, this isn’t a working vacation.”
“So you and Alli aren’t…together?”
“Are you asking if we’re a couple?”
Heather nodded, her cheeks coloring.
“No. Not at all. She’s just my assistant, although she is protective of me. Kind of like a big sister.” Joel took a sip of coffee. “Alli’s got a boyfriend. I think they’re getting pretty serious. I wouldn’t be surprised if she asks me to take their wedding photos by the end of next year.”
Heather let out a long, breathy sigh, smiled, and dug into her breakfast.
“What’s next on your agenda?” Joel asked.
“I’m planning to spread jam on my bagel, and then I think I’ll eat it.”
Joel chuckled. She could dish out teasing as well as she could take it. He liked that in a woman. “Touché,” he said. “Let me rephrase. What’s on your agenda after breakfast?”
“I was thinking about checking out the spa. Might get a massage.”
“Do you play tennis?”
“A little. I’m not very good.”
“Want to volley a ball around the court after your massage?”
Heather’s blue eyes sparkled. “Sounds fun. And it should be very good for your ego to play tennis with me.”
