Using Life Experiences in Your Writing
I am very fortunate to be married to the model on this cover. He's the one who introduced me to riding a Harley. He's also been in excruciating back pain for the last two years. Well, three weeks ago he had back surgery.
We like to joke he was splayed and fileted but the seriousness of the situation was very scary. He came through the surgery with flying colors, spent three days in the hospital driving the nurses crazy and came home a tad grumpy with a 10-inch scar down the middle of his back.
That's the give-you-willies part. The best part is he is walking tall for the first time in nearly six years and losing the weight gained by his inability to exercise. I'm getting a renewed husband in the trade.
Now what has that got to do with using this experience in my writing? I'm sure somewhere down the line one of my characters will experience pain similar to my husband's. I'll be able to use the reactions I had and my husband's responses to give insight into the character.
Big event happenings impact all the people in our lives. So goes it with characters. Just as every bad guy has to have some good and every good guy needs a bit of bad, our heroes and heroines must experience pain, healing and everyday grumpiness. Change the name; change the sex of the character; change some of the circumstances but use your life lessons to give depth to your stories.
I know I'm going to...
