A Minor Deception: A Joseph Haydn Mystery
by Nupur Tustin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Cozy Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Kapellmeister Joseph Haydn would
like nothing better than to show his principal violinist, Bartó Daboczi, the
door. But with the Empress Maria Theresa’s visit scheduled in three weeks,
Haydn can ill-afford to lose his surly virtuoso.
But when Bartó disappears—along with
all the music composed for the imperial visit—the Kapellmeister is forced to
don the role of Kapell-detective, or risk losing his job.
Before long Haydn's search uncovers
pieces of a disturbing puzzle. Bartó, it appears, is more than just a petty
thief—and more dangerous. And what seemed like a minor musical mishap could
modulate into a major political catastrophe unless Haydn can find his missing
virtuoso.

EXCERPT:
Haydn
can ill-afford to lose his principal violinist, and Bartó knows it. Haydn can't
fathom why his violinist would imply he's in any danger of losing his position.
Haydn
Overhears a Strange Conversation
The
sound of Bartó’s raucous voice drifted in to the room. Jolted out of his
thoughts, Haydn swung around to face the open window.
Bartó
was supposed to be in the Rehearsal Room with the rest of the orchestra
practicing the violin concerto that would greet the Empress upon her arrival.
What in God’s name was the first violinist doing outside the castle grounds?
Haydn
pushed his piano bench back, the force causing the brass fittings on its legs
to scrape against the marble floor. He strode toward the window and thrust the
burgundy curtains aside.
The
window of the Music Room gave on to the undulating landscape dotted with
vineyards at the foot of the Leitha Mountains. Haydn could see a part of the
town to his right. Beyond the town, far in the distance, the waters of Lake
Neusiedl glimmered on the horizon.
He
propped himself against the window sill with his hands, and leaned out as far
as he could. But the wide stone ledge skirting the window obstructed his view.
He could see neither Bartó nor his companion.
The
first violinist was speaking in lowered tones, even so his words were audible
to the Kapellmeister.
“It
is no fault of my own, I am sure. What can I do if the Kapellmeister chooses to
dismiss me?”
Haydn
was taken aback as much at the querulous note he detected in Bartó’s voice as
at his words.
“Then
you had best make sure you remain in his favor,” his companion responded in a
manner that sounded vaguely forbidding. Haydn thought he had heard the voice
before, but try as he might he could not place it.
“There
is too much at stake…” were the next words Haydn heard, although they were so
faintly uttered, he could not be sure of either the words or who had spoken
them. The men must have walked on for despite straining his ears to the utmost,
Haydn failed to discern the rest of the conversation.
He
stood still for a time, contemplating the landscape outside. The snippet he had
overheard set a welter of thoughts jostling in his head. What mischief was Bartó
up to now? Nothing in his conduct had suggested to the Kapellmeister that his
principal violinist feared for his position. Quite the contrary, in fact.
