Emerald: the birthstone for the month of May.
em•er•ald (em′ ∂r ∂ld em′r∂ld), n 1. a rare variety of the mineral beryl that is green because of its chromium content and is valued as a gem. 2. clear, deep green.
Did you know real emeralds can be grown in a lab?
In 1938, after years of experimenting, US college student Carroll Chatham successfully grew the first gem-quality emerald.
While Carroll was off in college, his chemistry experiment was left running in his parent’s garage. As fate would have it, Chatham’s father turned off the power supply to his science project. This simple action caused his emerald crystals to grow in the crucible, and the legacy was born.
Chatham emeralds mimic the slightly blue-green vivid color of the finest Colombian emeralds. Gem quality means there are no inclusions visible to the naked eye.
Today, decades after Carroll’s successful science experiment, Chatham is still recognized as the leader of created gemstones.
