Do you have the courage to -- fail?

The 2004 movie, National Treasure, has a spot where the main character, Benjamin Franklin Gates, paraphrases Thomas Edison. He, Benjamin, was asked why he continued to hunt for treasure when all he seemed to do was fail. According to the quote:

When asked why he worked on the light bulb when he'd failed so often, Edison replied, "I didn't fail. I found 2,000 ways how not to make a light bulb. I only need to find one way to make it work."

I believe the same theory applies to writers. We get wonderful ideas for stories we wish to share with the world hoping they will embrace our visions and, in the process, reward our hard work with a few shekels. When our amazing ideas meet with silence, it can be deeply disappointing.

Such is my own journey. My writing was born out of a need to communicate what I felt in a manner that didn't make those around me feel intimidated. I can be bullish about some of my beliefs. [I know... big eye roll, no duh.] When I penned a short story about a young lady and a dragon who meet near Mt. St. Helen's in the Northwest, I found an unlikely advocate; my 'I don't read' husband. He was vocally very excited about the premise of the story and highly encouraged me to expand the characters and scope.

So-o-o-o... I now have a three dragon stories published and an additional nine or so stories in the works. Have they done well? Mmmm, no. I don't believe I've made enough in royalties to cover the cost of  my internet connection. But I'm one of many who is unable to write the searing, flame-hot, romances pulling in the big bucks. Am I jealous? I'd be a liar if I said no. The majority of set-your-hair-on-fire romances are centered around well written stories. I can edit them but not write them.

In accordance with the title of this piece, I've failed. I haven't succeeded in my chosen passion. But every time I think about quitting and throwing in my computer keyboard, my characters literally keep me, and my husband, awake at night. Some stories just won't die. So, I go about putting those ideas on paper hoping my publisher finds them worthy of print and take solace in the knowledge I'll get some sleep this holiday.

Don't feed the reindeer before you start a journey, and have a wonderful holiday season.

#CheckInAnd ShareDay

It's Check In Day.

Let's Make Fireworks

Time to pay the piper! How did you do? How much did you write? Did words explode on your WIP?

This is the Rogue's Angels weekly check-in. Every Thursday we encourage the Angels and visitors to let us know how their writing is going.

How well are you doing?

Had problems this week? That's ok. Just sit down this coming week and write. Whatever you do, don't let difficulties from the week before get in your way this week.

Every word is one word closer to the finished product.

I finished the rough draft of Aidan's Love. This is the last book in the twelve book series my daughter began years ago when she was in Junior High. Yay! I begun work on my part of the Hot August Nights anthology.

My story in the anthology series is just about done, the rough draft anyway.

I'm rereading Christel's story and adding at least one scene.

EXCERPT:

A small crowd was gathered on the edge of my lawn. Neighbors hollered so loud that I couldn’t even hear myself think. A wall of hickory trees covered in a new dusting of snow stood above us caught our noise, bounded it around and threw the sounds back down. The strange vibration of our voices echoed in my ears.

“Calista! Really! Chasing an old man with a dough roller in the middle of the night! You should be ashamed," chastised Alma Douglas. Her blue curlers peeked out from beneath a large sateen scarf infested with brightly colored butterflies. Her thin pink cotton robe barely closed over her ample bosom. Her feet were thick, feet were shoved into a pair of matted blue slippers.

"Ashamed?" I snorted. "I found him in my house! What woman runs out of her home in the middle of the night screaming, if nothing is wrong?”

"He's harmless," Mr. Landy gagged back a chuckle. "Wouldn't hurt a fly." Then leaned forward and whispered, "The lights are on, but no one's inside." He whistled and made circles around his head. "You know what I mean, right?" Meager strands of gray hair had escaped hair band and whipped around the balding halo of his scalp.

The subject of our discussion was my elderly neighbor, Fred Guthrie. The man was stooped with a slight hump in his back. I had been living next door to him for a few months but had only seen him a hand-full of times. Shuffling his feet back-and-forth, he was oblivious to the argument surrounding him. The man was thin. A good wind could have knocked him over. Standing between us, Fred Guthrie was immune to my argument. His yellow, rummy eyes were downcast. Blue veined hands quivered at his side as he hummed faintly.

Assassin's Honor
by Gail Z. Martin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Epic Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:

1.     What elements are necessary components for this genre?

Assassin’s Honor and the Assassins of Landria series are technically epic fantasy because of the stakes (the king and kingdom), the time period, and the fairly sprawling scope. It’s a little different from my previous epic fantasy series (Chronicles of the Necromancer, Ascendant Kingdoms, Darkhurst) by being much shorter than the usual ‘big fat fantasy’ epic at under 300 pages, and being lighter in tone, more of a buddy flick. I prefer to think of it as epic fantasy for people who love the touchstones of the genre but don’t have the time or inclination to delve into a book that might take them weeks to read.

Epic fantasy generally has a medieval setting, lots of sword battles, some intricate schemes and intrigue, and magic, as well as daring heroes. You’ll find all those components in Assassin’s Honor, plus humor and adventure.

2. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

I love writing epic fantasy, but my other series, Darkhurst, is pretty somber and involved, and I wanted to do something different to switch things up. I’d also seen articles suggesting that people who used to read and aren’t reading now because of time constraints might be wooed back to books if they could find something in the genre they love that required less of a commitment, something they could read in the same amount of time they’d watch a couple of movies or binge watch a few episodes of a show on Netflix. I decided to write an epic fantasy that was action-packed, had humor as well as drama and scary parts, and was something different in a smaller package. I think Assassin’s Honor delivers.

3. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

I’ve been writing epic fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk/alternate history, and comedic horror for over a decade, and this is my fourth epic fantasy series. I’ve had a lifelong love of history, museums, castles and ghost stories. I adore anything about magic and the supernatural. My undergraduate degree was in history. So when you put that all together, I’ve been training for a lifetime to write this book!

4. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I’ve never met a museum I didn’t love. Give me a rainy day with no deadlines and stick me in a big city museum, and I might never come out, especially if the snack bar has decent coffee. I am so incredibly happy wandering through a museum or living history site, reading the signs, looking at cool stuff, and getting all kinds of amazing ideas for the next books!

5. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire! The Assassins of Landria series has six books, so expect a sequel to Assassin’s Honor next year. I’ll also be returning to my world of The Summoner and the Chronicles of the Necromancer with a new series, the Legacy of the Necromancer, which picks up 17 years later. Next year will also have the third and final Darkhurst book, Reckoning. There’ll be a new Deadly Curiosities novel, another Night Vigil novel, more of the Spells Salt and Steel novellas, and with luck, a second novel in the Jake Desmet/Iron & Blood universe! Plus I write urban fantasy MM paranormal romance as Morgan Brice, and there are a slew of new books and new series coming there!

6. Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?

Assassin’s Honor – Chapter One (Excerpt)

They wove a crooked course over the rooftops until they were several blocks north and a couple of streets west of Destwiler’s building. Ridge chanced a look over his shoulder and saw the glow from the fire in the distance. With the amount of gunpowder Rett had packed into the crate, the whole building would burn like a pyre.
Here,” Rett said, coming to a stop at the edge of a building with a stout, solidly built chimney. He secured the rope and held it out to Ridge, who grabbedhold, turned, and stepped off into the night.
Kelvin stifled a cry as Ridge rappelled down the side of the building. At the bottom, he stepped away and whistled, Rett’s signal to descend. Ridge spun and faced an empty street.
“He’s not here,” Ridge grated.
“He’ll be here,” Rett replied, unperturbed.
Racing hoof beats thundered in the night, and a black carriage turned the corner so fast it rose up on two wheels. The wild-eyed black stallion bore down like it meant to trample the three of them, reined in at the last moment by the short, balding, pudgy driver.
“Right on time!” Henri, the driver, exulted. Ridge glowered but said nothing as Rett threw open the door of the carriage, and they climbed inside, Kelvin between them. The carriage started up at a gallop before they had taken their seats, throwing them against the sides.
“Hang on,” Ridge advised Kelvin. “The driver is a madman.”

7. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

Best advice—Never give up. Keep at it, keep writing, keep honing your craft.
Worst advice—Don’t believe the old advice about needing to start out with short stories. That might have been true a long time ago, but the world has changed. If you want to write a novel, write a novel. If you decide later that you want to also write short stories, you can do that, too.

8. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I have to outline, because I have deadlines and without an outline I’d waste too much time going down tangents and dead ends. Outlining also helps me get my thoughts together, and in the process I see where I need to do more research or where I’m missing a crucial element, and the story really comes together. I’ve learned to appreciate outlining and enjoy it!

9. How do you maintain your creativity?

I love telling stories, reading other people’s stories, exploring history, and thinking ‘what if’? All those elements give me more ideas than I have time to write!

10. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?

I love all the characters, and I’m very fond of Ridge and Rett, but I also really love Henri, their valet. He’s such a dry wit, and an unexpected badass in his own way.

BLURB:

Buddy flick epic fantasy! Joel Breckenridge and Garrett Kennard are King's Shadows, elite assassins serving the crown of Landria. When a shadowy itinerant holy man starts captivates the nobility with treasonous whispers, Ridge and Rett go rogue to stop the threat, save the kingdom and protect the king--while landing on the 'Most Wanted' list themselves.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Breaking glass and the crack of gunfire were Ridge’s signal to move, as Destwiler’s skull exploded from the matchlock’s shot, spattering the crate of weapons with blood and bone. The boy screamed in terror, a thin, shrill sound.
Ridge spun around, grabbing two throwing knives from the top of the stash in the box and had them hilt-deep in each guard’s ribs before their swords cleared their scabbards. He dropped the heavy crossbar to lock the door to the office, and dodged back to the box of weapons, reclaiming his own array of swords and knives before teasing out a long fuse from the bottom of the crate. Then he strode over to Destwiler’s corpse and pulled the key and its strap around what was left of the man’s head.
Ridge removed the warrant from inside his vest and read out the charges as required by law. “Roan Destwiler. By order of King Kristoph of Landria, you stand condemned of crimes against the kingdom and the throne too numerous to note, but most grievously the kidnapping of Kelvin, son of Thad, Lord of Wendover. You are sentenced to death, summary execution, without notice or reprieve.”
He rolled the warrant up and tucked it into Destwiler’s bloody vest, a formality. Ridge bent down to search Destwiler’s pockets, curling his lip at the still-warm blood that soaked the shoulders and sleeves of the man’s coat. He found a parchment note tucked beneath the vest and took it to read later.
Rogue's Angels Present: Life Without Shoes by Emma Cyrus
Please welcome Emma Cyrus author of Life Without Shoes
Emma Cyrus will be awarding a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.
Life Without Shoes
by Emma Cyrus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW:
First, I’d like to thank Rogue’s Angels for hosting this stop on my blog tour this week.
I hadn’t written fiction since high school—and I had lots of embarrassing moments around that. From that point onward, I wrote a lot, but only non-fiction: academic papers through college and graduate school, and then business writing for my entire professional career—work products, correspondence, marketing plans, advertising copy, financial analyses—spanning several decades.
A friend suggested I study at Gotham Writers Workshop. A few years earlier, I’d started research for a mystery and then put it on the back burner. By the time I was taking the second level mystery-writing course, I’d begun to feel a commitment rising in me to finish Life Without Shoes. Fellow students and faculty had given me lots of positive feedback. It took another year and a half to get it to publication, and it wasn’t until recently that I started seeing myself as a writer—so the inspiration didn’t happen like a thunderbolt. It has built gradually over time along with input from many directions.
What elements are necessary components for this genre?
Mysteries and/or crime fiction are built around plots that raise a particular kind of question, usually along the lines of ‘whodunnit?’ While character is an important component, especially when a protagonist detective or sleuth is investigating the question, this is usually secondary to the three-part story arc. It starts with the presentation of the mysterious circumstance or crime. The middle part follows clues and discoveries that narrow down the investigation. The resolution reveals the perpetrator or antagonist and wraps up the story with loose ends tied off and the central question answered. Every other element can be, and has been, pulled from science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction, or even memoir and non-fiction.
How did you come up with your idea for your novel?
Life Without Shoesis set in a fictional non-denominational spiritual community in Northern California. At the time I was living in a similar situation, so I had a context to refer to. When I began my research (my OneNote notebook for Shoeswas created in February of 2010), I was just at the beginnings of describing the world of the book and its plot elements. I had, however, written the first chapter in 2010, and it came to me like a ‘download’—I just sat down and let it be ‘dictated’ to me.
What expertise did you bring to your writing?
I guess you could look at my 30+ years in spiritual communities as ‘expertise.’ Certainly, I know a lot about meditation, the routines and leadership of residential communities, the study focus of non-denominational environments. I have sat on the bridge between a cloistered setting and the ‘outside world’ and felt myself straddling those two different worldviews.
You could also consider my lifelong readership in the mystery genre a form of expertise. It’s the only fiction I ever really care to read, and I have deep exposure to many of the ‘greats.’ Interestingly, as I learn more about the craft of this genre, I see the strengths and weaknesses of many of these ‘greats,’ and find myself incorporating this perspective into my own writing.
Finally, my many years in business management have given me a strong sense of setting goals and meeting deadlines, as well as a good grasp of my own weaknesses in getting distracted or losing track of time.
As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
This book is the first in a series starring Father Ambrose. I’m almost finished with the second book, and I’ll be working with BETA readers throughout December, with a goal of publishing toward the end of February. Right now, I’m seeing a total of five books in this series. I’ve been watching the character arc of Ann Cleeves’ Shetlandseries and see how she purposely tied it off after eight. I like what she’s accomplished with that focused discipline. It’s also kind of like how J.K. Rowling saw the Harry Potter stories as a total story spanning seven books.
Can you give us a sneak peek into this book?
Life Without Shoesstarts with the discovery of a body on the grounds of a quiet spiritual community called New Life Ecumenical Retreat. Father Ambrose is the Abbot of New Life and he’s confronted with cooperating with law enforcement around this intrusion into their peaceful life. Sheriff Charlie Cormley is his counterpart on the ‘outside.’ Over the course of the book, they collaborate more and more closely, as Ambrose tries to find the truth that will free New Life from suspicion and identify the killer.
What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
Let’s start with the worst. I was working on the cover for the book, which is technically classified as a ‘cozy.’ One industry insider strongly encouraged me to go with a cartoon-y cover that showed a farmhouse behind rows of apple trees. Even though I completely believed in this person’s expertise, I felt she had mis-perceived the essence of the book. I’m glad I didn’t listen! I love the cover we eventually chose.
The best advice had to do with creating emotional richness in my story—if not in every scene, then at least in every chapter. I understood that to mean giving my characters the opportunity to feel deeply, to wonder, to experience truly meaningful responses to the situations and settings through which they passed. This isn’t always easy for me, because I’m not an emotional person myself. It gives me a good yardstick, however, for examining my work while I’m editing and improving its resonance.
Do you outline your books or just start writing?
A little of both. I put together a rough timeline with content snippets, knowing it will probably change. Then, I just start at the beginning and keep going, finding out what’s going to happen along the way. I work hard to keep the writing internally consistent as I go, so I don’t have to do heavy re-writing later.
How do you maintain your creativity?
I try to organize my writing time for periods during the week when it will be quiet in my apartment and I can just enter the story world. It’s like opening a new book or turning on a movie. I walk inside and then I’m not in my regular self. I’m ‘recording’ the story as I see it unfolding before me. When I go back the next day and re-read, I often don’t remember writing most of it. Perhaps that’s creativity, I don’t know. I just eliminate distractions and open myself up to the story.
Who is your favorite character in the book? Can you tell us why?
That’s a difficult question. That’s sort of like asking a mother which child her favorite is. Obviously, I have a strong connection with Father Ambrose, because it’s his life that runs like a river through the series. I like Charlie Cormley because he reminds me of Walt Longmire. Mother Francine intrigues me and she’ll probably have more involvement as the series progresses. And Ruth Cormley is a quietly influential woman in the world of Green Butte and San Miguel County. We’ll probably see more of her in the future a
BLURB:
In the great tradition of The Name of the Rose, the Brother Cadfael mysteries and Grantchester, Life Without Shoes confronts a modern-day monastic with a horrifying crime.
Father Ambrose has found a simple life leading a spiritual community in Northern California. He spends his days on guiding the farming and teaching meditation. Then, someone dumps a body in one of their orchards.
Now, the violence of the modern world has come crashing through the gates. He wants Sheriff Charlie Cormley to believe the body has nothing to do with them, but it’s not that easy. He must take on the role of sleuth to protect his community and find the truth. He finds himself moving out into the world in ways he never imagined, and life at New Life will never be the same.
EXCERPT:
He looked up to see Brother Jeremy leaning on the doorjamb, pale and shaking. The young monk clutched his sandals in one hand and wiped perspiration from his upper lip with the sleeve of his robe. “Father,” he gasped.
“Good Lord, what is it? Here, sit down.” Ambrose pulled a chair across the small office and urged Jeremy into it. He held up his hand to forestall the young man’s story until he’d poured out a glass of water and seen that the threat of fainting had passed.
Jeremy’s hand shook on the water glass.  He rested his forehead on the other palm. “I...I...” he started, then, closing his eyes, “Oh, God, this is awful.”
Ambrose pulled his desk chair up close and looked intently at the young man’s face. “Just keep it simple, Jeremy, so I can understand what’s happened.”
“You asked me to pick up that trash bag someone dumped in the orchard, so I went out there with the Toyota this morning....” Here, he lowered his gaze, aware that too much time had elapsed between Ambrose’s request and his taking action. Regret and guilt played around his mouth.
“Yes, you should have been out there Saturday afternoon, but let’s forget that right now. What happened?”
“Some dogs had gotten to it, torn it open...” He gulped, then rushed on. “There was an arm sticking out of the bag.” He closed his eyes again and swallowed hard.
“An arm? Are you certain?”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Emma was born in West Virginia and lived there until she was in high school, when her family moved to Pittsburgh. After high school, she went to Boston to go to college. She worked in different small and startup businesses until she moved into a yoga community in Pennsylvania. There, she’s worked on various projects and taught yoga.
She started the Father Ambrose series as a way of pulling together her love of good mystery stories with her deepening appreciation of the real-life magic and mystery of inner work. Father Ambrose has many characteristics in common with the leaders of her community, but his voice is probably hers, or at least what she thinks her voice would be, if she were living inside the parameters of his life.
She’s discovering the compelling nature of writing fiction and the surprises of working with what other writers have called their ‘muse.’ The creative process seems to have its own timetable and logic. The best results seem to come from stilling her own personal voice and allowing that ‘muse’ to speak.
