GENRE: Dark Fiction

INTERVIEW:

How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

I’ve been involved in the addiction and mental health industries for many years. What always gets me is that mental health patients want to get better but have difficulty getting there but addiction patients can get better but frequently do not want to. They become their own worst enemy. Knickerbocker, although a reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hallow, is a modern take on the addiction treatment industry and the process of recovery, including the employees within the industry. Most people relapse due to an inflated ego or a shock to their ego. Without rectifying and changing character defects, whether or not recovered addicts are putting chemicals in their bodies, they are still under the thumb of addiction, teetering on the line between using and abstinence. I’ve always said the employees are more screwed up than the patients. Knickerbockeris my good-bye letter to the industry.

What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

I’ve witnessed two UFO sightings in my hometown in the 1980’s. No I wasn’t drunk nor high (both happened before that period of life), but you can Google UFO sighting in Hudson Valley, NY to learn more. Whether they were actual alien spacecraft’s or military operations doesn’t really matter, my interest in alien’s and other worldly beings was launched. Another tid bit about the sightings is that a few days later a series of black helicopters flying in a circle formation flew over the same area. We all joked at the time that the government was attempting to make us believe what we saw was just helicopters. They were definitely not helicopters.

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

Continue with the multi genre Beyond the Chamber Doorseries. I have an outline of nine books for this series. I’ve also begun a dystopian scifi trilogy, The Indigo Trials, which is a spin off of book three in the current series, titled The Rose. The aliens will arrive in book three (refer to question two).

Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

Yes. Critiques help to polish the story and having a fresh set of eyes is always a good thing. Writers can miss inconsistencies even during the editing process. Remember the story was born from our minds, so what makes sense to us might be completely missed by the reader. Critique groups help to point out the inconsistencies and strengthen the story. Also, critiques always help to find the appropriate audience. With so many different genre’s in today’s writing world, its difficult to ascertain exactly where a particular book will fit unless you’re writing for a very specific audience to begin with. I’m a multi genre author and every story has multiple themes and subgenres that exist within. Critiques help to find the correct audience to market to.

What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

Best advice is from Stephen King’s On Writing. Actually everything in this book is spot on, he is Mr. King after all. One quote always comes to mind over the others though: read, read, read, write, write, write.

Worst advice is from my mother when I was twelve, “Learn a trade,” she said. Too funny. Yes I love my mother; she was just scared for her little strange child and didn’t want to see me struggle so I get it. In retrospect, Stephen King aside, also probably the best advice I’ve ever received because it set me on a path that brought me here. “Look Ma, Still Writing!”

Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I just start writing. Once the story pops into my brain I let it develop, usually while I’m continuing to work on whatever novel I’m currently writing. New ideas and scenes and themes will continue to manifest and then pen hits the paper (or fingers hit the keyboard). As the story develops I take notes on additional plot lines but notice I never look at them. I think once I write them down they’re ingrained on the brain.

How do you maintain your creativity?

I’m in my head a lot. A LOT! Something that nags my wife every so often but she’s come to accept it. I hear “Where are you. Earth to Paul,” every few days. I take long walks to clear the mind, look at sunsets, sunrises, and generally enjoy looking and staring at scenes, whether its people or nature. I can find inspiration in just about anything, however, music is a large part of the creative process. I love to belt out tunes and lyrics, especially when writing particularly emotional scenes. The perfect song drives that emotion from the heart to the fingers to the word doc.

Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?

Without revealing too much, the old man at the end of Knickerbocker, the feature story in Twisted Tales of Deceit. He’s the behind the scenes watching and listening with a wide lens and pulling all the strings type of person.

Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?

I’m plotting all three. Angels and demons existing simultaneously within the same person, demons influencing angels, angels influencing demons and bunnies running amok either not aware of the demons or angels or completely aware of them and manipulating them against each other to their benefit.

Anything else you might want to add?

Thank you Rogues Angels for hosting and thank you to whomever has read this post. I hope you enjoyed it.

BLURB:

Twisted Tales of Deceit is the first installment in the Beyond the Chamber Door series. Featuring three tales (The Calculated Desolation of Hope, Somnium, & Knickerbocker) chronicling an evil influence on the human psyche, tipping our hands into the engagement of what is most horrifying; our dastardly, human deeds steeped in self-destruction, desperation and the loss of dreams. Metaphorical warnings have been constructed inside these pages to reflect the everyday signs the universe provides under the guise of reflective light that return to mirror how evil tempts our hand so to not fulfill the dreams of the soul. Our doubts, our sadness, our indecisions rooted in fear, are toiled with by the presence of imps bent on hatred and in need of our nightmares to survive. Here, the human spirit is dripped like honey, tasteful to the dark corridors of human malevolence and taken advantage by the corrupt and seamlessly endless parade other worldly dimensions have on what should be our earthly utopia, creating rage in the cosmic hedonism of jealousy.

EXCERPT:

He remembered the wolf, roaming in the room. Saw the gamer and the boy he had saved with their throats cut out as the wolf fed on them. Their black eyeballs staring at William.

Remembered how the bodies were taken from the room. Remembered how he screamed but had no strength to do anything about it.

And how Katarina appeared again, another needle in hand. Remembered how he wanted it now, to help him forget. She shot him up and his world became smaller, the walls closing in to squeeze all that he knew in between the four walls of that tiny room, now no bigger than the bed he lay on.

He remembered how the world disappeared, melted away like ice.

Remembered how the darkness invited itself into his space, and how the world had gone mad.

“What the fu…” he grumbled, collapsing to the floor. His heart fluttered, and his skin flushed pale white and red. He leaned against the wall, watching the final dissipation of daylight outside the window. And the room grew dark with a sliver of moonlight that broke through the window as his memories faded and an unnerving hunger cried out from his veins. A tiny voice in his head.

“More,” it called. “Please, more.”

His body felt pain, pain like he’d never felt before. His mind felt confusion, he couldn’t put a thought together. His eyes turned wet with tears and he started to wail. He wailed until his voice gave out.

And then the footsteps. Loud, clunking footsteps against the wood floor. The massive image half hidden in the darkness, half illuminated by the moonlight, seemed to drift toward him with a mindful caution only to disappear just before reaching him. His vision wavered as the hunger grew.

In front of him, nose to nose, Mephisto shined his yellow eyes on him. And Mephisto grinned, scooping him in his arms like a baby and delivering him to the bed.

“Rest,” Mephisto said, pausing as he looked on William who saw the death of stars gleaming in Mephisto’s eyes.

“And welcome…to oblivion.”

His grin was sinister, daring and satisfied.
