GENRE  Thriller

INTERVIEW:

1. What or who inspired you to start writing?

I grew up reading Tom Clancy and the Bourne books. I started writing to recreate the action and adventure of those books with a female heroin. What if Jack Ryan’s wife took the leading role? What if Marie St. Jacque saved Jason Bourne? What if strong-willed women saved the day with the support of talented men? I love the quote ‘She needed a hero, so she became one.’ That is my inspiration.

2. What elements are necessary components for this genre.

The thriller genre needs action and suspense with tough and savvy protagonists and ruthless villains. But it also needs a human element and definitely the occasional laugh. In Gray Horizon, Jonathan Whyte, the main character’s brother has a great role in a little comic relief.

3. How did you come up with your idea for your novel?

The main character, Lillian Whyte, is an emergency room physician with grit and spunk. I wanted an adventure that brought her out of her comfort zone and built her character. In book one, Black Gold, she travels to Africa on a medical mission (I’m a physician and also traveled to Kenya). In book two, Whyte Knight, her husband’s CIA work entangles her in a biomedical terrorist plot. In her most recent adventure, Gray Horizon, a past enemy resurfaces and a nuclear weapon is stolen.

4. What expertise did you bring to your writing?

The medical emergencies are all authentic in each book as are the career struggles Lillian faces. The military scenes took a good deal of research, as did the information on nuclear weapons. For Gray Horizon, an ex-Navy friend of mine was gracious to read and critique the military aspects.

5. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

Although I am a physician, like Lillian, I’m less jaded about medicine than she is. I love my work and my patients. I think the medical system has numerous flaws but there are also a lot of wonderful medical providers trying to give the best care they can.

6. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?

I am working on finishing The Rider Files series—a four-book romantic suspense adventure where each book is a stand-alone. After Book 2 won honorable mention in the Readers’ Favorite Award romantic suspense category, it has been selling well. I’m working on Book 4 now.

7. If you could be one of the characters from this book, who would it be and why?

I would be Lillian Whyte—she’s tough, she’s savvy, and she’s got skills. Being married to a CIA agent is no small task. After several harrowing adventures, Lillian has had martial arts and gun training. She doesn’t sit on the sidelines if she thinks she can help.

8. Can you give us a sneak peak into this book?

Absolutely! Gray Horizon begins with the theft of a nuclear weapon from a North Korean weapon’s facility. Sean Jennings, a CIA officer and Lillian’s husband, is summoned to Langley for an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ meeting with the president and joint chiefs. Meanwhile, needing a vacation, Lillian takes their planned vacation to Iceland alone. When Ivan Kleist, a mercenary involved in Lillian’s kidnapping in Kenya almost a decade ago, ambushes Lillian, she tumbles down a rabbit hole of chasing a nuclear weapon before it reaches her destination.

9. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?

I have several critique partners and continue to make new one. This is a great group of women and men, and I value their feedback. I also go outside the group if I need particular expertise—for example, when the Delta Force attempts to reclaim the stolen nuke in Gray Horizon, I needed military expertise and turned to a retired Navy friend.

10. When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

Black Gold was my first book, published in 2016. I wrote it slowly over the course of probably ten years as I went through medical school and residency. When it was finally finished, I submitted it. I was thrilled to see something I created in print.

11. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)

Best advice: Read. Read. Read. Read other fiction. Read about writing. Read about editing. Read about marketing.

12. Do you outline your books or just start writing?

I outline them though not initially in great detail. I start broad and then weave in more detailed outlining as I write.

13. How do you maintain your creativity?

I’m a daydreamer. If I have a few moments of quiet, a drive down the road, or a plane flight, I’m thinking about the next scene of my next book.

14. Who is your favorite character in the book. Can you tell us why?

In Gray Horizon, my favorite character is Ivan Kleist. His checkered past and battered moral compass make him perfect for the role he plays and his many interactions with Lillian.

15. Are your plotting bunnies angels or demons?

Entertaining fiction needs a mixture of all of these, even better when characters have personalities with aspects of all of these. My books have angels protecting bunnies, demons becoming angels, and bunnies becoming demons.

16. Anything else you might want to add?

If you sign up for my newletter, you get a unique dossier compiled on CIA officer Sean Jennings. It’s perfect to peruse while reading the novel.

BLURB:

Sworn enemies. A stolen nuclear weapon. And the clock's ticking.

When Dr. Lillian Whyte learns a nuclear weapon is on the loose in Europe, she collides with a ruthless mercenary from her past. Isolated from her husband, a former CIA operative, Lillian tries to covertly help track the weapon. As she he joins the race to stop the bomb, she is drawn into a deadly game of chase. Despite her efforts, those intent on global catastrophe remain one step ahead of her.

As Lillian faces the fears of her past and deadliness of the present, can she secure the future of the world?

EXCERPT:

“Dr. Whyte,” a guttural voice greeted her.

Her blood turned frigid and her stomach lurched as her heart thudded against her ribcage. As long as she lived, she would never forget that deep German accent—the voice of one of her captors nine years ago in Kenya.

The one that got away.

She was fairly certain Ivan Kleist would have only one reason for tracking her down: revenge.

Springing from the bench seat, she lashed a leg out into his gut. She saw a brief look of surprise on his pale face before she took off in a sprint.

Why now? Nine years he had waited.

The calculating killer had waited until she was out of the United States and away from Sean to corner her. She dashed in the direction of her hotel. Would she be safe in the lobby? In her room?

She slung her purse over her shoulder. Her phone was in the outer pocket, but she would have to slow down to make a call. Not happening. She would not slow until she reached the hotel.

Could she beat him to the hotel? His legs were longer, but she was ten years younger. But he probably hadn’t already logged twenty-six thousand steps for the day, as she had.

From her peripheral vision, Lillian saw an enormous object barreling toward her like a freight train. She barely had time to brace herself before Ivan plowed into her. She felt like she had been tackled by a linebacker. His large arms encircled her as she sailed to the ground. They rolled through the grass, her body encased by his.

He was so large he could probably crush the life out of her with his arms. She gasped for air. He wasn’t crushing her, but his grip was immobilizing.

Grunting, he hauled her to her feet. “Settle down, hase. Little white rabbit.”

Lillian, still dazed and sucking wind after her sprint, hardly put up a fight as he dragged her into an alley. Looking around frantically, her eyes couldn’t focus long enough to see anyone within shouting distance. She clawed at his large hand blocking her mouth from screaming.

    1. Hi! There are a total of 3 books in the series (Black Gold, Whyte Knight, and Gray Horizon). While I think about what's next with this character, I'm working on book 4 in a romantic suspense series (The Rider Files).

    1. Yes. I worked with a designer to describe what I was looking for. He did a wonderful job with this cover and with making the series look well-branded. (The three books in the series are Black Gold, Whyte Knight, and Gray Horizon)
